Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord -
Chapter 239: She’s Not a Mage
Chapter 239: She’s Not a Mage
Noelle was stunned.
The man cupping her face was staring straight into his eyes as if he were baring his soul to her. The sadness and yearning she could see in his gray orbs made her feel a painful twist in her stomach.
It left her breathless.
Why was this man looking at her and touching her this way?
She felt lost in his eyes, like she was under some strong spell she couldn’t break.
Bodeville’s royal family was rendered speechless at the scene. Princess Iris’ jaw dropped. She thought that if Alec reacted this way upon seeing the maid, her brother and sister must have been right. The maid must really resemble the king’s dead wife!
How could a lowly servant be so lucky to be touched by King Alec? Iris was so annoyed at the scene.
Matthias coughed at Alec’s back.
"Your Majesty, she is Noelle Davis, one of the newly hired maids."
It was then that Alec snapped out of his trance.
This woman’s eyes...
They are black.
Noelle’s eyes widened when she heard how Matthias addressed the man in front of her.
Your Majesty.
It meant he was the king of Evardin! The vampire king, Alec Everston!
Despite seeing the maid’s different eyes, Alec didn’t let go of her. He watched her face, from the shape of her eyes, nose, lips, and brows to the smallest details. Apart from the slightly slimmer face and different eye color, nothing else could set her apart from Lauren.
In the past five years, there wasn’t a day or an hour Alec didn’t fantasize about seeing Lauren again. And among his most vivid dreams, this was the most surreal.
Only this time, it wasn’t a dream. It wasn’t an illusion either. She was real. What’s happening was real.
Alec had memorized everything about Lauren. The smallest details of her face, even the smallest marks on her skin. He got it all registered in his mind, replaying it every single day.
He wasn’t doing it because he was afraid to forget her, but because he needed it to keep going.
I don’t sense any magic in her. She’s not a mage but a human.
Neither does she have Lauren’s scent.
Alec’s eyes narrowed darkly, and in an instant, one of his hands that were gently cupping her face locked her neck into a chokehold.
Everyone who was there to witness the scene was shocked at the sudden turn of events. One second, the king was showing so much emotion upon seeing the maid, and the next second, he was ready to kill her.
"Who the fuck are you?" Alec’s voice was a low murmur, a deadly whisper in the wind.
Alec was thinking that the woman went through some spell to copy Lauren’s looks.
"Who sent you?" Alec squeezed the woman’s neck tighter. "How dare you impersonate the queen of this land."
Impersonate?!
Noelle was confused. She wasn’t impersonating anyone!
"Y-Your Majesty! My friend is not impersonating the late queen!" Jenny said, bowing down to Alec, begging for Noelle’s life to be spared.
"Your Majesty..." Matthias trailed off, seeing how ruthless Alec looked. This was definitely not the time to intervene. He also thought that if Alec was thinking that the young maid was trying to impersonate the late Queen Lauren, he would know it better. Besides, such an uncanny resemblance was worth being suspicious of.
"I-I am not..." Noelle could barely utter another word!
Is this the end of me?
But I don’t even know what I’m dying for! Why does he need to do this just because I resemble his dead wife?
Bodeville’s royal family couldn’t say anything. They were merely guests and they knew better than to meddle with the vampire king’s matters especially when they were in the palace, the territory of the king.
"Please spare my friend, Your Majesty!" Jenny continued to beg.
Tears pooled in Noelle’s eyes. She could barely breathe, and she knew that she might pass out at any moment.
All of a sudden, Alec’s grip on Noelle’s neck loosened. A flicker of emotion crossed his eyes as he watched her tears roll down from the corners of her eyes. Her cheeks had turned pink as well as her nose, and the way she looked at him screamed how helpless she was.
Despite knowing that the maid was a mere copycat of Lauren, her face was still similar to Lauren’s, and Alec felt like he was hurting his wife right now.
He couldn’t bear to watch the sight of Lauren’s face crying in front of him.
Noelle fell to the floor with a thud when Alec dropped him harshly. She looked up at him; their gazes met, and her heart pounded in fear.
Alec’s jaw clenched and he looked away.
"Bring her to the dungeon."
Matthias replied quickly, "Yes, Your Majesty."
Dungeon!
Noelle’s jaw dropped. Was she going to be a prisoner now?
"Your Majesty, this is a misunderstanding. I came here to be a maid and nothing else!" Noelle tried to defend herself despite the painful lump in her throat.
There was something in the way the king looked at her that made her feel something. It made her feel a strong urge to prove him wrong, not because she wanted to keep her job as a maid, but to let him know she didn’t have ill motives for coming here.
"Please follow me, Miss Davis," Matthias said in a firm tone. He didn’t want to drag the woman into the dungeon so he was trying to be diplomatic.
Alec didn’t say anything and took a seat at the dining table without sparing Noelle another glance. His expression was stern and his eyes were blank.
With the king’s absolute command, Noelle realized the king’s mind was close and she would never believe her no matter how much she tried to explain her innocence.
Before she willingly followed Matthias, with her heart beating loudly in her chest, she said, "I hope you set aside personal interests and look into this matter objectively, Your Majesty. I am willing to cooperate with the investigation and prove my innocence."
