Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord
Chapter 226: A General’s Commitment

Chapter 226: A General’s Commitment

Before she fell on her knee, Edith plunged her sword into the ground to gain support, coughing blood.

’This is not good.’

The vial of rectifier she consumed could only restrict the poison in her body for a couple of hours at most. It had been almost two hours since she took the rectifier and she could feel her body weakening.

Even if she took another vial of rectifier now, it would be of no use. The black mage’s dark magic was mixed with a poison spell, one that was stronger than any poison spell she had encountered before.

This fact brought a glint of dread to Edith’s eyes. It only meant the black mages had indeed evolved. They were stronger and could wield more powerful magic. She suspected that a very powerful individual was behind this change.

"General, are you alright?" One of Edith’s subordinates noticed her bad state and went to her.

The soldier noticed her wounded arm. The poison in her wound had spread to her body, and its trace was noticeable at the base of her neck.

"You must have been hit by a black mage’s poison spell, General. Some of our soldiers were injured by it, and some had died."

Edith forced herself to stand. Her subordinate held her elbow but she told him she was fine. The young soldier looked bothered by Edith’s state but he followed her order and kept his hands to himself.

"It seems that not all black mages can mix poison spells with dark magic. Help those injured with poison spells and bring them to the town’s healer house. There must be a healer mage who can do something about it."

Colton’s army was in the town’s north and central district. Edith knew that he must be aware of the poison spell by now and had sent a missive to the council. The council doctor, Dr. Bentley, was busy working on the mass production of the temporary antidote for deranged humans, but Evardin wasn’t short of great healer mages.

There should be a way out of this. It was the time when they needed soldiers the most. They could not fail their kingdom.

"But...what about you, General?"

Edith wiped the trace of blood on her jaw with the back of her hand.

"I will stay here."

"But-"

"Carry out my order right now," Edith cut him off in a firm tone.

Her subordinate looked hesitant but in the end, he could not dare bend his superior’s command.

"Yes, General!"

The soldier mounted his horse and left Edith standing weakly in the midst of a battling crowd.

Edith looked around. Blood was everywhere, ruined houses, crying, screaming, and dead bodies. Only half of the royal army went to suppress the attack in town with three commanders leading each troop. Colton was in north and central district, she was in the south, Julian was in the east, and the west was being subdued by Lauren’s skilled cavalrymen.

Edith did not know how long she could last, but she could not bring herself to leave her army. These soldiers fighting for Evardin were not the only people whose lives revolved around protecting their kingdom. They had personal lives, too. They had families waiting for them.

Once she chose to leave to prioritize herself, it would lessen the troop’s morale. And it was not what a general should do.

Looking at Evardin’s castle towering far ahead of the town, the image of her superior flashed in her mind.

She smiled.

"I shall do my best to protect our kingdom, Your Majesty."

And so, Edith decided to fight with the remaining strength and magic she had.

"I’m a pureblooded vampire. I should last for a couple of hours more," she muttered to herself as she continued fighting black mages and deranged humans.

She heard that the castle was under attack, which meant she could not afford to waste time.

"Vance! Aidan!" She called two of her most skilled subordinates. "Let’s do the Arrow-Eye formation!"

The two who were in different directions nodded at her. Edith commanded the other soldiers to shield them from attacks so they could do the formation.

Edith knew that it would consume so much of her energy and magic, but she was running out of time. She might be overestimating herself that she could last for a couple of hours more. They had lost many soldiers because of the black mages’ poison spell.

A lot of civilians needed protection, and she was afraid that more of them would be inflicted with poison. They needed the most efficient way of killing black mages.

Edith glanced at the little girl at the corner of a ruined house. She was being protected by a soldier. Edith felt an ache in her chest. It was her lifelong dream to be a soldier. The protector of people. But with the poison rapidly terrorizing her body, she doubted if she could still see tomorrow’s sunrise.

All she wished was for this war to end.

Pointing her sword up, the three of them, Edith and her two subordinates created a fusion of magic. Standing at different parts of the town’s south district, they formed a triangle as the light of their magic mixed above the place.

Edith felt her knees weaken, but she stomped her feet and held her ground.

She gripped the hilt of her sword with both hands so tight that she was sure it bruised her palms.

With the powers of the three combined, a magic formation was formed. A smoke-like, huge blue eye was formed at the jointing point of their magic.

They muttered an incantation under their breath in unison, and the next moment, huge arrows with a blue aura came out from the eye, shooting down the battling crowd.

The black mages who were hit were reduced to ashes in a split second. However, despite how powerful the magic formation was, some black mages got away with it. Those who were too fast to get caught by the arrows.
