Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord -
Chapter 225: She Knows What to Do Now
Chapter 225: She Knows What to Do Now
"If only I were able to control my powers sooner, it wouldn’t have taken me thirteen years to return and seek revenge."
Mildred carried a smile on her face, but her eyes were somber and ireful.
"You know what, King Alec, it was never my plan to make you my enemy. I have returned to ruin the royal family and make Martin pay for all those years of suffering I went through because of him."
"But because you are the king and you are hindering me from reconciling with my daughter, I don’t think an agreement is possible with us. You must be thinking the same, don’t you?"
"If you really think of Lauren as your daughter, then why did you never reach out to her in the past years? You cannot trick me with your words. I know you only want to use her to have the monarch’s power."
Mildred shook her head. "You don’t understand, King Alec. Lauren is the only family left to me. I am her mother. I know what is best for her."
"No, you don’t."
Both Mildred and Alec turned their heads to Lauren who was walking through the battling crowd several meters away.
The sight of Lauren in the middle of the chaos agitated Alec.
"Lauren, how did you..." He stopped midway when his gaze darted behind Lauren. There he saw her loyal henchman, Darius.
"Why did you free her? I was the one who locked her up, Darius," Alec said through gritted teeth.
"Don’t blame him."
Alec ignored Lauren. Moving at his vampire speed, the next moment he was standing next to Lauren, the cold steel of his sword aimed at Darius’ neck.
"Are you aware of what you are doing? You are putting the queen’s life in danger!"
Darius’ face remained stoic and hard despite Alec’s blazing blade being a tiny inch away from slashing his neck.
Lauren held Alec’s hand which was gripping his sword fiercely. She could tell that he was holding onto his last thread of patience.
"It was me who forced him to break the barrier, Alec. I am his master. He cannot defy my orders."
"I am here to protect her," Darius said quietly.
"Put your sword down, Alec," Lauren demanded.
Alec’s jaw clenched. He looked at Lauren and withdrew the sword, defiance evident in his eyes.
He glared at Darius and muttered words in a husky, low voice. The words came out so fast and firm that a human ear could barely catch them.
"You better keep your word and do your job well. I won’t give a damn digging your heart out if something happens to her."
Darius did not say anything. He only stared back at Alec’s piercing red eyes without any reaction.
Lauren didn’t clearly hear what Alec said to Darius, but with the look on Alec’s face, she knew it was a threat.
"I know you are worried, Alec. But if I did not go here, how would I have heard what you were talking about?" Lauren glanced at the woman watching them from several meters away.
"So you have heard the talk I had with your husband, my darling," said Mildred as she took a few steps forward.
The gentle smile she was keeping up did not put Lauren at ease like it did when she was a child. Instead, it made her feel uneasy. Something was ominous in the air the woman was carrying, which was why despite having her mother’s face, she could not completely see the Lady Mildred she remembered in her memory.
For Lauren, it was a different person with her mother’s face.
However, she was beginning to believe the woman’s story. She saw how disturbed Alec looked when Mildred mentioned his father. From how Alec reacted, she knew that the woman’s story must have coincided with what happened to Alec’s family.
If it were really true...then it meant her mother killed Alec’s mother.
The thought was very disturbing for Lauren.
She hoped that this woman was only using Alec’s family story to make them believe that she was telling the truth.
"I forgot to tell you something, Your Majesty," said Darius which caught Lauren’s attention.
"What is it?"
"I went to the tomb of Lady Mildred yesterday without your permission. I know it is disrespectful, but I had to do it to confirm something. I dug out the tomb and found the casket empty. I inspected it using magic and it appears it has been empty for years."
Lauren was stunned but the shock didn’t show on her face. At some point, she knew it was possible. From the beginning, her mother was not a normal person but a descendant of the first generation of black mages. From the root of her illness, everything was unexpected.
She had been thinking about it, so now it was not a big shock to her.
She now understood what was written in the book on the spellbound ship.
Lauren had been enlightened. She finally knew what to do to end this curse and this chaos.
But...
She was not sure if she could share her decision with Alec.
She looked at him, her eyes tender and full of affection. She started to wonder what their lives would have been like without their titles and all of the responsibilities on their shoulders.
Perhaps they could have the perfect happy ending every couple dreamed of.
"See? You have the truth right before your eyes and you are still refusing to believe it. I am Mildred Thudor, Lauren. Your mother."
Back then, Lauren had always wished for her mother to return. But now that it finally happened, she couldn’t find herself to be happy.
The mother she wanted was the mother she had in the past. This person was completely different.
With a hard face, Lauren spoke in an icy tone.
"If it is really you, mother, why did it take you thirteen years to come back for me?"
"You must have heard what I said to your husband. As I have mentioned, I wasn’t able to control my powers sooner which delayed my revenge. I even burned myself in the process," Mildred smiled bitterly and touched her burnt face. "I want to come back for you when I am stronger, Lauren. When I already have an army. When I can finally put an end to the Monserrate’s reign. And I did make it happen."
