Chapter 215: Newsletter from Supreme House

Chapter 215: Newsletter from Supreme House

When it was time for Dr. Bentley and Sean Devitt to leave, Alec assigned a group of royal guards to escort the two and guard them while they worked at the council laboratory.

Alec suggested that they should work in the royal laboratory and stay in the castle while working on the antidote to ensure their safety, but Dr. Bentley insisted that it wouldn’t be convenient for him.

Dr. Bentley had so many things in his laboratory that it would be inconvenient to bring them all over. He also pointed out that he wouldn’t be comfortable working in a different laboratory because he organized his things in such a way that they couldn’t be disarrayed, otherwise, it would take him time to arrange them.

Pulling out her gloves, Lauren picked up the teacup with both hands. Her pale hands held the hot teacup. The warmth relieved her hands from the cold as she stood by the window of Alec’s office.

"Vincent has sent a missive to King Sebastian asking where Anthony is. I’m sure we will get an answer in a few hours at most," Alec said. He stood close behind her.

"How do you feel?"

Lauren smiled. "Good."

"Give me an honest answer, Lauren." His demand was firm. "Tell me if you feel any kind of pain. I have your pacifiers, so you can’t take more than one until the week ends. Don’t you dare lie and tell me you feel good."

Her smile faded. She lowered her gaze to the cup of tea. The once hot liquid had turned into ice. It offered her a little warmth a few moments ago, but now her hands had returned to their icy temperature.

"You are not doing any better and you know that," Alec whispered grimly in Lauren’s ear. His jaw clenched hard.

A tear escaped from Lauren’s eye but she immediately wiped it. She put the teacup on the table beside her and turned around. She saw Alec’s hard gaze fall on the teacup with frozen tea inside it.

"Yes, I am getting worse every day. Is that what you want to hear?"

She drew a deep breath to calm herself. She could not afford to lose control. She didn’t know when she would turn into a coldblooded monster, but she assumed it could be triggered when her emotions were all over the place.

What Simon Lancelot had said to her still lingered in her mind. She knew it was possible. Her turning into an emotionless executioner with no knowledge of love and compassion. It was the thing she feared the most.

"Of course, I know my worsening condition. But can’t I pretend that everything’s all right to make myself feel better?"

Alec’s jaw remained clenched but his eyes softened at the vulnerability Lauren showed.

"All I’m asking you is to be honest with me. I want to know everything you are feeling...I want to know where parts of you hurt so I will know where to soothe you," he said slowly, as if he was trying to make me understand every word he said.

With a glint of tears at the corner of her eyes, Lauren’s lips slowly stretched into a smile. A bittersweet one.

"I’m sorry. I know you are just worried." She lifted her hand and cupped Alec’s cheek. "I don’t feel any pain at the moment, but I feel colder than I was yesterday." Her ice-cold hand against his warm cheek was the proof.

Alec’s face did not relax one bit. He remained stiff and grim. His eyes, however, screamed tenderness.

"I’m just a little scared, I guess..." she chuckled, trying to shake off the tension in the air. "But I know at the end, we will get a solution to this. After all, I have you as my husband."

Lauren was about to pull back her hand but Alec caught it before she could. He held her hand against his cheek. Just like that, she felt as though she were lying in the meadows during the summer. The warmth he transferred to her body soothed her in so many ways that no one else could ever do.

"I don’t think it is a coincidence," she said after a short while of silence.

"What?"

"Us falling for each other."

"Why do you think so?"

"I think we are fated to be with each other. I turned out to be someone with an inherited curse that gave me a rare illness that made cold my enemy. Then there you are, born with the gift of blue fire. Perhaps the deities knew I was bound to suffer such a mishap, so they gave me some consolation. You."

His eyes darkened. "Are you trying to make my heart flutter?"

She grinned. "Is it effective?"

The corners of his lips pulled up a bit, but it only lasted for a split second. His expression returned dark again, sullen, and even angry. She understood why. Alec had been so vocal about how she had become the center of his life. She could not read minds, but just by looking at his eyes, she knew that deep down, he was hurting too. Probably even more than she was.

The day was long. A few hours before lunch, Alec just stayed in his office to read court reports. He asked Lauren to stay in the office with him so he would know whatever was happening to her, and so she did, to give him peace of mind.

During the afternoon, Alec and Vincent had a meeting with the commanders of the royal army. At this time, Lauren stayed in the bedroom to rest and think of a way to unlock the book she found on the ship. She tried new spells, even combining some, until exhaustion got her and she fell asleep.

When Lauren woke up, Alec was by her side, watching her sleep. It was already time for dinner so they went to the dining hall together. Vincent was there, sitting and playing with a glass of blood. Just as they had taken their seats, Matthias arrived to deliver the newly received news.

"Your Majesty, this newsletter from the Supreme House has been sent to all lands tonight." Matthias gave the paper to Alec.

"What is that?" Vincent curiously asked.

Alec checked the newsletter. It only took him a second to understand what it was all about.

"Something big has happened," he said before summarizing what the newsletter entailed.

"The Supreme House is in chaos."

"What?" Vincent smirked. "Did Lord Eleazer step down?"

"Lady Amber has been disqualified as the chief’s successor."
