Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord
Chapter 214: Good News

Chapter 214: Good News

Standing at the tower of the castle, Vincent looked over the dark clouds looming in the moonless sky. The eerie darkness made Vincent feel something ominous. He remembered that night before his uncle Sebastian’s father, the late king, died, and for some odd reason, he felt the same tonight. A tragedy was about to befall Evardin.

That woman he had fought with was no ordinary woman. Even though she was only a clone, she put up a good fight. Which meant if she used her original body, it might not be too easy to take her down.

Vincent would want to see how far she could go with her original body, but it wasn’t a good time to be excited about fighting someone. The moment the rebels staged a full-blown attack, innocent people would be dragged into a bloody mess. Deranged humans and stronger black mages were the rebels’ pawns which made everything worse.

The sky remained gloomy the next morning. It rained in the dawn but when the sun rose, it had tapered off. Lauren woke to Alec’s fingers gently playing with her hair.

Leaning on his chest, she looked up at him. He kissed her forehead. The night before felt like a nightmare, and with Alec by her side when she woke up, relief washed over her.

When they went to bed last night, it took a little while for Lauren to fall asleep. The appearance of the rebels’ mastermind occupied most of her thoughts. Her instincts told her she couldn’t be the real Lady Mildred, but with all the things she had learned about herself and her mother recently, how would she identify truth from lies?

Lauren had doubts in her heart. But one thing was for sure. Whatever Simon Lancelot and that woman knew, she was determined to uncover it.

"To clear your doubts, how about we check if Lady Mildred’s soul is in the realm of the dead?" Vincent suggested when the topic was brought to the breakfast table.

"But we can only do that if we tap on forbidden sorcery." Lauren revisited her memory to see if she had read anything about how the practice was done without breaking the law of spells, but she found none.

"There’s another way to do it," Alec said.

"There is?"

"Anthony." Vincent smirked as if the sage’s name was a solution to many problems.

"There is a way but only a few know how, which includes Anthony," explained Alec.

"But he has left and maybe he has business he’s busy with right now. We had asked for his help a couple of times. Wouldn’t he mind it?"

Alec sipped on his glass of blood wine. "We can do something about that."

In the middle of their breakfast, the dining hall’s door opened. Matthias entered with two visitors. The council doctor, Dr. Bentley, and his apprentice, the former officer, Sean Devitt.

"Dr. Bentley said the matter to be discussed with you is urgent, so I decided to bring them here, Your Majesty," said Matthias.

Dr. Bentley then said, "We do not mean to interrupt your breakfast, King Alec, but I believe we cannot delay telling you the news we have."

"Please join us," Lauren offered. "We can discuss it here."

"Thank you, Queen Lauren."

The two took seats. Lauren put down her cutlery and gulped down some water. Her eyes glimmered with interest. Dr. Bentley had been taking his time investigating the Evera plant. It was the poisonous plant created by sorcery that the rebels used to create deranged humans.

"So what is this news you have?" asked Alec.

Lauren hoped it was good news and not otherwise.

"We have created an antidote for deranged humans."

"Antidote?" Lauren was surprised. She didn’t expect it. "That is good news!"

"But..." Sean Devitt cleared his throat when he saw how Alec’s eyes narrowed at him. "It is only a temporary antidote. We have tested it on a subject. It worked, however, it only lasted for six days. We gave him another dose, and then another one after that, and it lasted for six days every time."

"But that is still a great help, right?" Lauren glanced at Alec and Vincent. "At least there is something that could help the deranged humans even though it is only temporary." She then turned to Dr. Bentley. "I think if you take a little more time on improving this antidote, I’m sure you will eventually make a perfect one."

"How did you come up with the antidote?" Alec was critical. "The human brain is the most vulnerable. Once it is damaged by something caused by sorcery, it is almost impossible to repair it."

Dr. Bentley’s lips curled up a bit. "You mentioned ’almost’ which means it is not totally impossible to repair it. I am a seasoned mage doctor, King Alec. My most treasured weapon is this," he said, putting his index finger on his temple, pointing out his brain. "I have never held or seen an Evera plant before, but the rose you sent the last time had its extract, and that’s where I started my experiments."

Dr. Bentley glanced at Sean Devitt by his side. "This young man is quite helpful. He is a great healer mage. He knows a lot of things ordinary healer mages don’t."

"I only want to help our people, doctor."

Lauren looked at Sean, her gaze expressing her gratitude. She had always hated Sean Devitt before and she did not expect this man to actually do something so helpful for Evardin. She felt rewarded for helping him escape his death sentence.

"But the problem is, deranged humans are very aggressive. For sure it won’t be easy feeding them the antidote, especially if they are in a great number," said Vincent in a serious tone, "From what happened last night, we can expect an attack from the rebels anytime, which presumably includes a handful of deranged humans."

They continued their discussion in the king’s office to talk about it in private. Alec agreed to Vincent’s remark. If the rebels suddenly managed to corrupt a great number of humans, feeding them the antidote wouldn’t come easy.

Eventually, Lauren came up with an idea.

"Some can use magic while some can rely on weapons. What I am saying is, we can make a new kind of gun where we can use the vials of antidotes as bullets. We can shoot them straight to the deranged humans’ mouths to feed them the antidote."
