Chapter 210: Ghost of the Past (2)
"Are you sure you want me to?" Vincent’s eyes narrowed, weighing the woman’s expression.
"I said it, did I not?" The woman’s disposition remained calm. She opened her arms, suggesting how ready she was for anything from Vincent. "I know it would hurt you as a gentleman to cast a spell on a woman, but I have no problem with it, Lord Vincent. Why don’t we proceed so the truth shall prevail?"
Vincent smirked. "It is a pleasure that my humble nature has reached your ears, madame. If you insist, then the gentleman that I am will not dare refuse."
Alec and Vincent exchanged meaningful glances. Alec’s dark eyes were serious and distant, while Vincent’s were mischievous.
Lauren swallowed at the fast pounding of her heart. Alec gave her a reassuring look, but she could not keep herself composed. Vincent then took a step forward, his stance domineering.
Alec’s eyes turned darker. The thought of ripping off the woman’s head crossed his mind, but he wondered what she was hiding up her sleeves. But there was one thing he was sure about. Whether her being Lauren’s mother was true or not, she could not be up for any good, and he would do everything in his power to protect Lauren.
Lifting his hand, Vincent’s eyes turned dark red. Warm light danced along his fingers, and with one flick of his index finger, the golden light went towards the woman. It moved around her body, lingering in the corners, until her body froze. Her eyes glowed gold, like the color of the light coming from Vincent’s palm.
Lauren held her breath for a moment. She had read and heard a lot about the Truth Revealing spell. It was said that once the eyes of the receiver of the spell turned black, it meant she was not telling the truth. However, if she were being honest, her eyes would turn gold.
"Tell me. Is that your original appearance?" Vincent demanded.
The woman’s eyes remained gold, seemingly under a hypnotic spell that was stealing her consciousness.
"Yes," she replied in a split second.
Lauren blinked. No. There was no way it could be possible.
"Are you the mastermind of the rebels?"
"Yes."
Vincent was serious, and his concentration on what he was doing was evident in his expression.
"Why are you raising a rebellion against the Evardin monarch?"
"For revenge."
Lauren’s brows furrowed. She gently shook her head, refusing to get all those information on her head. This could not be real. Her mother was long dead and she did not need her to come back as their enemy.
"Revenge for what?"
Before the woman could answer, the golden light enveloping her body vanished and she regained consciousness.
Vincent hissed, disappointed that his spell did not last long. He turned to Lauren and Alec and said, "I don’t know why I couldn’t hold the spell any longer. Her body sucked a lot of my magic."
"Which could be caused by whatever sorcery her body is made of," Alec said. His stance was firm. He had been in the face of so many liars and manipulators that it was not hard for him to identify one. He knew that despite the outcome of Vincent’s spell, this woman should not be anywhere near Lauren.
"My honesty has been proven by Lord Vincent’s Truth Revealing spell and you still don’t believe me? Your Majesty, I do not think you are being fair."
"Fair?" One corner of Alec’s lips lifted subtly. "You are asking me for fairness?" The mockery was evident in his tone as if it were the most ridiculous thing he had ever heard.
The next moment, Alec’s hand was pushed forward and a band of blue fire squeezed the woman’s neck.
The royal guards were all alert, ready to fight the woman if she dared make any move against their king.
Lauren watched the woman smile and do nothing as she met her eyes. She did not struggle, nor did she scream in pain like those unfortunate people who got themselves anywhere near Alec’s lethal blue fire.
"I am going to kill you," Alec muttered under his breath like an oath he would never dare break. He was about to squeeze the woman’s neck further when she spoke.
"If you do that, you will never know what is the cure for your wife’s illness."
It struck Alec like lightning. The band of blue fire disappeared from the woman’s neck. She laughed.
Lauren was not surprised. If Simon Lancelot knew that information about her, it meant the people he was working with should also be aware of it, especially this woman. Disregarding the fact that the unburnt side of her face looked exactly like her mother’s, looking at it objectively, she could say that the woman appeared smart and dangerous. She seemed to know exactly what her goal was and what she was doing.
"Look at you, the ruler of a huge kingdom, stopping your supposed murder just because of a woman. You are indeed a one-of-a-kind man, Your Majesty," the woman mocked, her brown eyes gleaming with mirth, seemingly enjoying herself. "What a shame for you to have such a weakness."
"Why is it a weakness to love a woman?" Vincent butted in, smirking playfully. "I don’t think it should be called a weakness, madame." A devilish grin flashed across his face. "You don’t know what a man can do for the woman he loves."
"So this is the card you are hiding?" Alec remained composed, but the fiery darkness in his eyes was cruel and deadly. He looked like he had imagined one hundred ways of killing the person who dared provoke him. "You know we are searching for the cure of Lauren’s illness and you think you can manipulate me into submitting to you."
"I am her mother whether you believe it or not, and only I know how to survive the Capewell curse cast in our bloodline."
"Stop dragging my mother’s name into your scheme!" Lauren pulled the pistol from a royal guard and aimed it at the woman. She was trembling and gritting her teeth in anger. She was more than livid.
