Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord -
Chapter 164: Anything For You
Chapter 164: Anything For You
"A missive from Evardin?" Lauren asked, looking at the piece of paper in Alec’s hand that was delivered by a pigeon. It was already time for dinner and they were planning to go to the tower restaurant they visited back then. She was fixing her hair when the pigeon came by the window.
"Yes." Alec’s face remained motionless as he read the missive.
Lauren was unable to tell if it was good or bad news.
"What is it?"
"Someone from the Supreme House came by." The piece of paper burst in flames in Alec’s fingers. He was calm but Lauren couldn’t really tell if nothing bad happened.
"What for?" Lauren was a little nervous. Vincent must have not done anything silly, right? The man was devious and playful but she knew he had the same nature as Alec. He wasn’t dumb and he never acted like one. Alec entrusted the King’s duty to him, which meant he knew Vincent was capable enough to play the role. What she was worried about, though, was the reason why the Supreme House sent someone to Evardin.
"Did something happen?"
Lauren couldn’t help but be anxious every time the Supreme House was mentioned. Once they found out the unraveled truth of her existence, it would be a big problem. She had killed quite a few people using her ability and most of those incidents happened outdoors. Darius always made sure the area was free of watchers, but what if someone saw and Darius didn’t catch his presence? What if that night Alec discovered her secret would happen again and someone else found her in that state...
"Nothing. The Supreme House just seems to be interested in the rise of deranged humans. It started in Evardin and they fear it would spread to other lands," Alec purposely skipped the part about Amber finding out Vincent was impersonating him. He didn’t want Lauren to worry about it. He wanted her to focus on finding a cure for her illness. Besides, he was certain Amber would not tell a soul.
"That’s all?"
"Yes," replied Alec which eased the worry in Lauren’s chest. "Now, shall we leave? You must be hungry."
Lauren nodded. They didn’t travel by carriage and left the mansion through Alec’s portal. Alec knew a spot in the tower hidden from the guests’ eyes because he often used his portal in going to the restaurant late at night. When they arrived, Alec chose the same table they used the last time. The one on the balcony where they could have the best view of the townscape.
"Are you sure no one will recognize us here?" Lauren asked.
"I’ve been here countless times but no one had recognized me yet. This tower is in the south district of Acheron whose people are mostly in middle-class households. I doubt if they care about anyone from the high society. Besides, even if someone would, who would believe that the King and Queen of Evardin visited a diner for middle-class people in the downtown of Acheron?"
"I see..." Now that visited the place again, Lauren remembered Alec saying that he sometimes came with a friend when he went here. It piqued her curiosity so she asked, "By the way, who is the friend you mentioned the last time? When you said you come here sometimes with a company."
Was it a woman? Lauren wanted to add but she stopped herself. She would sound like she was jealous and he didn’t want him to think that way.
"Perhaps is it Vincent?" She realized it could be the lord since Vincent lived in Acheron.
"I came here with him once," Alec admitted. "But I came a few times with Dimitri. Vincent often gets to my nerves while Dimitri talks about more relevant things."
"Like state affairs?" Lauren grinned and shook her head. "You know what, friends don’t talk about stuff like that all the time, Alec. You meet with friends to talk about your lives, throw jokes, and laugh with each other. If I did not marry you, I would never think of befriending you."
"Good to hear that. I don’t have plans on being friends with you either," his lips curved a bit.
"Should I say thank you?"
When their food arrived, Lauren noticed the lanterns flying in the sky. She stared in awe, wondering why many people were setting out lanterns.
"Why are they setting out lanterns?" She asked Alec who was sipping his glass of blood wine. He also looked at the sky and put down his glass.
"The residents of this district hold festivities at this time of the year. They set out lanterns in the sky where their wishes are written. It is a sort of tradition."
Lauren stopped eating and stood. Both her hands gripped the barricade as she watched the people on the streets. Colorful lights filled the downtown, ladies and men were dancing joyfully while the children played on the side. She also noticed the group of young men and women dancing at the huge park wearing masks just like how it was in masquerade balls in high society.
"This... is beautiful."
"Want to go down?"
Lauren didn’t notice Alec was already standing a step behind her, watching the look of astonishment on her face. There were also festivities in Evardin, but she had never seen like this before. It was like the entire district joined their hearts and were just set on having fun the whole night.
"Can we?"
Alec didn’t miss the glimmer of excitement in Lauren’s eyes. He really liked it whenever she was indulging herself in the things she wanted, when she wasn’t feigning any of her expressions, when she was just being her true self... the carefree and jolly Lauren whose smile was enough to brighten up a dark room.
"Who says we can’t?" Alec wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her to his body. He put his face at the crook of her neck and inhaled her sweet flowery scent as he whispered, "Anything for you, love..."
