Chapter 151: A Pair of Dark Eyes
Chapter 151: A Pair of Dark Eyes
"You can’t be a black mage," the vampire muttered as Lauren sauntered towards him.
He balled his fists, ready to fight the unknown creature. He was shocked at first and he must admit that he felt fear, but he was also thrilled at the thought that someone made his little trip in Evardin more exciting.
He twisted his wrist that Lauren gripped earlier, his bones back to normal in just a matter of seconds. The man wasn’t just a lowly vampire but a pureblooded one who came from a strong bloodline so his body’s healing ability was as superior as a vampire mage.
Before Lauren could reach him, the man stepped on the trunk behind him with a strong force to push himself forward. The trunk shook and some of its dry branches fell at the same time his punch almost landed on Lauren’s face.
He moved fast and he was confident that he would hit her, only to be disappointed when he found out Lauren moved faster. She caught his wrist before her other hand claimed his neck. She then slammed him into the ground which caused some snow to drift up in the air.
’She is very strong,’ the man said in his mind, the veins on his neck protruding as he fought against Lauren’s strength.
She squeezed his neck hard which made him mutter a curse when he heard a crack on his neck. He struggled to breathe and regretted that he didn’t run when he had a chance to. He shouldn’t have underestimated the woman’s strength.
Lauren stood with the man’s neck in her hand. She thrust him up in the air, his bloodshot eyes looking at her helplessly. The man wanted to kick her and do something but he felt like his body had gone numb.
He then noticed the black smoke coming from his body that was going inside Lauren’s parted lips. His eyes widened more, realizing that she was absorbing his life energy!
"I did not plan to kill anyone tonight but you came to me asking for death. You can’t blame me. You should have run instead of blocking my way," Lauren said in a smooth yet chilly voice.
The man’s skin slowly turned rippled and lifeless like an old man’s skin. His bones shrunk, his cheeks turned hollow, and his hair became gray. The strength and vigor he once had as a vampire was now gone. He looked nothing less than a dry twig that could be broken in two.
After absorbing all of the man’s life energy, Lauren squeezed the man’s neck harder until the bone of his neck was crushed in her hand. His head and body fell on the snowy ground separately.
It was only then Lauren noticed a pair of dark eyes watching her in the shadows.
The wind blew as more snow fell from the misty sky. The night in the woods was dark, cold, and mortifying. Her wavy hair, a mix of auburn and white, was flowing down her waist, dancing to the rhythm of the soft breeze and marred with flecks of snow. Her eyes remained full white as she met his gaze.
"How long have you been watching?" She asked when he stepped into the light, her voice distant. Indifferent.
Alec stood a few feet from her, in front of the dead body of the vampire she just killed. He wasn’t wearing a coat like one would under such weather. He was only in a white linen shirt as if he was in a hurry to leave and didn’t have much time to dress. He didn’t look like he was cold though.
He didn’t answer and only stared at her. His face was like a blank canvas, motionless... grim. He didn’t have to say a word. She knew he must have seen what she did to the man. Besides, her strange appearance right now was enough for him to conclude that something was wrong with her.
"Now, do you still want me to be your wife?" Lauren asked bleakly.
Things had changed now. There was no point in hiding the truth from Alec after he witnessed everything. She knew she looked strange, unsightly, and dangerous. She wouldn’t be surprised if he would throw her out of the castle himself.
Perhaps it was one of the reasons why she couldn’t bring herself to tell her friends or him about it... because she could not accept that dark side of her and was scared of what they would think of her. She was embarrassed. Mortified. She just wanted to hide it forever, to bring it to her grave.
It would be great if Alec would really throw her out of the castle. He would stop pursuing her and she would leave the world peacefully when the time came. If he sent her away, she wouldn’t cause chaos. She wouldn’t ruin anything. So she guessed it was for the best.
"This is what I truly am, King Alec," she addressed him coldly as she stared into his eyes. "I am a monster. My very existence is against the law of nature and the law of this world. This is the reason why I cannot stay as your queen. I’m sure a man wouldn’t want a wife who looks like this, right?"
Who would, anyway?
"You don’t have to ask me to leave the castle. I’ll leave in my own will. Give me a few days, or weeks if I still have time..."
Lauren stopped talking when Alec walked towards her. He stepped on the dead man’s body as if he couldn’t care less about everything around him.
"Why did you leave without telling me?" He asked with a grim face.
Her lips parted. She was expecting him to be angry at her, to insult her for hiding the truth of her identity, or at least show disappointment and dislike.
But she was stunned when he started buttoning up her coat instead of doing all the worst things she imagined.
"It’s cold out here. Let’s go home."
