Chapter 101: It tastes sweet, doesn’t it?

The coachman immediately reigned the horses. The giddy expression on Lauren’s face made Alec confused.

"What is it?"

Instead of giving him an explanation, she said, "Just come!" before she went off the carriage.

Lauren went to the bakery and the smile on her lips grew bigger when she saw the owners who were an old human couple.

The passersby who saw Alec step out of the carriage and recognized him as the lord who became the crown prince bowed and distanced themselves. Commoners knew well that the elites, especially the royals, never liked associating themselves with lowly people.

"Mr. and Mrs. Thompson! For the past months, I have been craving for your cakes! You can’t imagine what kind of relief it gave me when I saw your bakery open again," Lauren said which brought bright smiles to the couple’s faces.

"The princess really holds a charm over people, don’t you think, Your Highness?" asked Matthias who was standing one step behind Alec. They did not enter the bakery and just stood near the entrance.

"Is staring at my wife part of your job?" Alec’s icy tone made Matthias look down at the ground right away.

"Pardon me, sire. It wasn’t the princess I was looking at but the old couple. I shall wait in the carriage." Matthias hurriedly joined the coachman on his seat. He had noticed the change of mood of his superior when he discovered the princess went out with her friends which the duke’s son, Ethan Sullivan, was part of.

"They have the best pastries here. I love their cakes," Lauren said to Alec when he went to her.

"Oh, good lord! This must be His Highness, the Crown Prince!" The woman pulled her husband so they could bow to Alec. "It is our pleasure to have you here in our humble place, Your Royal Highness!"

"Just treat us as normal customers, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson. We won’t mind," Lauren said and Alec could see that she was quite fond of the old couple.

"Please have a seat," Mrs. Thompson gestured to the table. "We will serve your favorite cakes in a minute."

"Take your time," Lauren replied.

"So, you frequent here?" Alec asked. His eyes scanned the place briefly before his gaze stopped at her.

"Yes, you can say that. I love sweets and their cakes taste the best in the town. But they had to close the bakery a few months ago. It was only today I saw it open again. I guess it’s my lucky night," Lauren answered and her blue eyes glimmered like sapphire as she watched Mrs. Thompson walk toward their table holding a tray of cakes.

"Here you go," the old woman carefully laid the tray on their table.

"Thank you, Mrs. Thompson."

Lauren took the fork and gave herself a bite. She savored the sweet taste on her tongue before swallowing. She was about to take another bite when she noticed Alec was staring at her intently. She was too engrossed with the delicacies in front of her that she forgot about him.

"Do you like it so much?" Alec asked.

She cleared her throat and gave him the other fork. "Why don’t you try it yourself? I swear all of these taste good."

"I don’t like sweets."

"So... you are just going to watch me eat?" It didn’t sound like a good idea to her. In the castle, she was used to being watched by maids even in doing trivial things, but she found it uncomfortable being watched by Alec.

"Do you see a problem with that?"

"No, but it doesn’t seem right. Come on, just take a few bites. Their cakes are not too sweet if you are worrying about hurting your tooth," she teased and gave herself another bite.

Alec watch her take a bite from different slices of cake on the table like a gluttonous kitten and his lips tugged a bit.

He didn’t think the cake would be sweet enough for him though. The meal he wanted to devour was not the things served on the platter but the lady in front of him.

"Staring is rude when you are at the table with someone who’s eating. Don’t you know etiquette? You should also eat, dear husband," Lauren said.

Before he could say a word, she shoved a bite of cake into his mouth with her fork.

"What did you-"

"Don’t talk when your mouth is full," Lauren cut her off, suppressing her laughter because the icing messed with his lips.

He glared at her but she couldn’t take him seriously.

"It tastes sweet, doesn’t it?" She asked while he was wiping off the icing on his lips with a napkin.

She grinned and continued to eat.

"I’m warning you, Lauren. Don’t you ever shove something into my mouth like that again," Alec said once they got back to the carriage.

Lauren had a great appetite when it came to the Thompson’s pastries, but she couldn’t eat everything so she just had the leftovers packed.

"I am sorry for that," she said but she didn’t sound sorry at all. She was even fighting the urge to smile and it didn’t escape Alec’s eye. "Well, if you were only polite enough to join me, I wouldn’t have shoved it to your face. I’m not blaming you, of course. I was just trying to let you have a taste of my favorite cake. As your wife, I suppose there is no harm in doing that."

"I told you I don’t like sweets. Now I’m thirsty."

Thirsty... that word made Lauren’s smile vanish.

"Come here, dear wife," now Alec’s tone was sweet but it only made Lauren hiss.

"But we are in a carriage-"

"I believe that’s not a problem."

She looked at him in disbelief. "Are you serious? You want to drink from me here? But the windows are transparent, Alec. What would people think if they would see? It is rather scandalous, don’t you think."

His brow raised.

"It is normal for married couples to be intimate. There’s nothing scandalous about it. Now come and sit here beside me. I will only take a sip. It’s getting late and it’s dark here inside. No one will see."

Lauren sighed. If only she knew that Alec would get thirsty for blood after taking a bite of cake, she wouldn’t have shoved the cake into his mouth.

She rose from her seat but the carriage suddenly encountered an uneven pavement which made her lose her balance and instead of landing on the seat beside Alec, she landed on his lap.

The carriage came to a halt at the same time Lauren’s heart leaped in shock. Her face was only half an inch away from Alec and his arm was around her waist.

"Your Highness, one of the wheels-" Matthias who peeked in through the carriage’s window left his words in the air when he saw the situation inside.
