Chapter 897: Chapter 897 W37 Base Station
The situation occurred very suddenly. Xu Huo was still tallying the Cannibal Player’s belongings when, the next second, he found himself outside the train. His fellow passengers had all disappeared, and he stood in a long-abandoned city. The wide but cracked roads rose and fell, blocking visibility. Whether he looked ahead or behind, with normal human sight he couldn’t see beyond fifty meters.
Beside the road were high-rise buildings that had experienced burning, explosions, and tilting. This city’s civilization was clearly more advanced than that of Zone 014, with all the buildings being garden-like. Hence, after abandonment, the unchecked rapid growth of plants had largely covered the surfaces of the buildings, which looked eerily full in the darkness. It seemed as if unpredictable dangers lurked behind the rustling leaves and branches.
As soon as Xu Huo emerged, he used the "Vacuum Ring". Although it didn’t make too much noise, it still disturbed some animals hiding in the darkness.
Having located them, he moved thirty meters forward with a step and then used "Gentleman’s Stance" to ascend into the air.
"Gentleman’s Stance" was faster than he had imagined, so along with the misalignment, he easily dodged several Aliens that pounced out.
These Aliens had evolved to nearly five meters tall, with huge bodies and well-developed limbs. Even on flat ground, they could leap more than ten meters, especially since the terrain itself was uneven.
Like shadows flitting through the night, the three Aliens ran silently, using the undulating ground to leap up and snap at the man flying above.
Xu Huo drew his "Crimson Sword" and slashed through the air at the closest Alien. But at that moment, an arrow flew from a nearby building, striking the sword and sending it slightly off course. The Sword Qi only shaved off a tuft of the Alien’s fur.
Glancing at the Alien that had returned to the ground and was still lurking there, he looked up in the direction the arrow had come from.
The archer was moving quickly inside the building. Judging by the speed, it wasn’t a Player, but they had also made no noise, and had probably been camouflaged nearby before.
Non-Players had few Props they could use, and to be able to survive in this abandoned city active with Aliens indicated that the person could conceal their tracks well, perhaps a relic of a bygone civilization.
Without rushing to pursue, Xu Huo put on an Invisibility Cloak and landed on the balcony of an intermediate floor in the building—not because he wanted to stay there, but when he ascended, he saw a cocoon over twenty meters long at the rooftop with many things wriggling inside.
He entered from the balcony to quickly check the layout inside the house, confirming that it was safe before opening his personal panel:
[Player Passerby A has successfully entered the W37 Base Station, by default participating in the instance "Encrypted Information". This instance is a Rank-C Copy, and Players may choose the team mode for clearance.]
[Background Introduction: The original name of W37 Base Station is lost to history. It collapsed swiftly after the first Alien horde outbreak, losing a large population while civilization quickly disintegrated, proud technological achievements buried. The survivors retreated to 37 newly established safe cities—the W37 Base Station named after them.]
[Yet, unpredictable weather anomalies and the mass reproduction of Aliens greatly reduced the Base City’s food production areas. To survive, the Base City had to send armed groups outside to search for suitable planting locations. Through long efforts, these armed groups found some habitable places but brought back a virus humans couldn’t resist. Ten Base Cities became epidemic areas, isolated from external resources, they were attacked by Aliens and lost their defense lines within three months, turning into Alien Habitats.]
[As protection was lax at the start of the outbreak, the virus also spread in the Base Cities that had sent out rescue teams or evacuated populations, causing five safe cities to fall. Remaining Base Cities successfully stopped the spread of the virus only after they completely refused to take in any more people from the epidemic cities and set up isolation zones.]
[However, through the long efforts of Base W11, they found a human-Alien hybrid with antibodies. After reaching agreements with certain Bases, their armed forces went hunting for live samples of this hybrid to bring back to the Base.]
[But traversing through harsh natural environments and Alien-active areas wasn’t easy. Over a dozen armed groups relayed only to transport the remaining three live samples to Base W19. Recently, an armed group sent out from W11 Base sent a distress signal before losing contact, and Base W11 entrusted the Players with the task of transporting live samples.]
[Instance Mission: Transport one live sample to W37 Base.]
[Instance Time: Thirty local days.]
[In this instance world, time calculations differ from the Player’s original Wormhole Point. Players can complete the mission based on local time. Each Player will receive a positioning device that will indicate the direction when near the live sample.]
What followed were two sets of different times—one for E27 Wormhole Point and one for E21 Wormhole Point, with the seconds ticking at different rates and each having separate countdown timers.
The countdown for E27 was seven days, while for E21, it was thirty days. But each day was still 24 hours.
Xu Huo exited the panel to check his watch. The hands moved as usual, but neither E21 nor E27’s time seemed to match anymore.
He stood still for ten seconds to count, then looked at the time on his personal panel again. His personal perception and the local time were also divergent.
In other words, the length of time between the two sectors was different, and the perception of the unit time had changed for humans. Although still using the twenty-four-hour system, the total time had altered.
For now, it seemed that seven days passed in E27 would amount to a month in E21.
However, the passage of time on a person wouldn’t change. Given the longevity of Players, a difference of a few days or even tens of days was negligible.
Taking off his watch, Xu Huo switched to the Prop "Complete Time."
This Prop would automatically convert time according to the sector, saving the trouble of constantly checking the personal panel.
He set a thirty-day countdown and then began searching the house.
The first step in the mission was to retrieve a live sample from a location in Base W19. Although he had a locator, the maximum distance wasn’t clear, nor was it clear whether he had been transported to Base W19. So his immediate task was to pinpoint his location.
This wasn’t difficult. A paper calendar issued by the Base was in the living room, with "W18" written on it.
Unable to find a map of the Base Station, Xu Huo opened Beneath the Dimension and purchased a map from another Player. Judging from the map, W18 and W19 were not far apart, only separated by a desert area.
He put away the map whose authenticity was yet to be verified, stepped out the door, and didn’t find a staircase. Instead, he saw several single-person elevators, non-functional, but traces of rope usage were evident inside.
