Chapter 868: Chapter 868: The Zoo with a Rich Variety of Species
The Giant Python’s size was even more oppressive than Xu Huo anticipated, and as it suddenly reared its head, it towered above his own height—he sidestepped quickly, drawing the "Crimson Sword" in a swift motion and sliced the creature in half at the waist.
Blood splattered copiously onto the surrounding plants, and the seemingly harmless branches and leaves suddenly began to quiver, quickly absorbing the blood on their surfaces. Stimulated by the blood, they unfurled, groping around to coil around the python’s carcass and drag it deep into the underbrush.
As the plants came alive, something resembling a cave flashed into view—it was likely the main body of the carnivorous plant, and this entire area was its hunting zone.
These carnivorous plants moved slowly, so even when they encountered Xu Huo, they couldn’t ensnare him. However, they left numerous pin-sized fluffy particles on his protective suit.
Because he wore an "Oxygen Supply," Xu Huo couldn’t smell the plants. He took out a simple device he had purchased from Zone 011 and tested it—these plants were releasing fluffy particles with a slight toxicity.
It was impossible for the plants to take down large animals; their primary prey must be smaller creatures.
He surveyed the surroundings and noted that apart from the python he just killed, no other large animals were drawn by the scent of blood.
Looking at the floating fluff in the air, he roughly guessed the reason—no matter how much animals evolved, they needed to breathe, and these particles were unpleasant when inhaled into the respiratory organs, so animals typically didn’t approach this area.
Dealing with large mutant animals wasn’t difficult. They had keen senses of smell and hearing, both of which could be exploited. Xu Huo had specially made scent potions, but now wasn’t the right time to use them.
While a pungent smell might drive some mutant animals away, it could also enrage them and backfire. Using such a tactic in a primal jungle filled with mutant animals was too uncertain.
However, this white ball mission with a difficulty level of 25% wasn’t that easy to complete. Besides the recently encountered python, Xu Huo barely spotted any other reptiles in the vicinity. To finish the mission, he’d have to widen his search and move away from the protective grove where the cabin was.
He moved forward at random, aware that those who hadn’t returned from the mission before him didn’t make it back, and there must be more than one spot in this vast mission area where a cabin was placed.
Wearing the "Silent Figurine," Xu Huo proceeded and shied away from any large predatory beasts he encountered. With his evolution rate having increased, his spatial awareness had expanded, and within these few minutes of silenced movement, he successfully found a lizard.
Using the "Note Launcher," Xu Huo knocked over the lizard, almost as long as a person, took a video, put on gloves to flip it over, took several close-up shots of its belly, and then marked its back with an indelible "①."
To ensure the reptile was "alive," he revived it after filming and placed an apple in front of it.
The lizard, having been knocked unconscious and then awoken, appeared somewhat angry. It sniffed the apple, then smashed it to a pulp with a swat of its claw before flicking its tail and walking away.
It was clear the lizard was in good health.
However, the effects of the "Silent Figurine" had already worn off.
Xu Huo flicked away the poisonous spiders that had crawled onto his mask and looked around. The dense vegetation not only obstructed his view but also dulled his senses. Sometimes, the brush pressing against him blurred his perception. In ten minutes, he had been attacked by poisonous insects no less than ten times, with one even puncturing his protective suit.
Even though he was carrying King Fungus, he dared not let his guard down and simply wore two layers of protective suits, applying a toxic potion on the outside of the suit.
He hadn’t gone far when he felt the ground tremble. There were traces of small animals scurrying through the underbrush—all fleeing in one direction.
Climbing up a tree with the help of a violin string, Xu Huo used the canopy to conceal himself and gazed into the distance. Nearly a kilometer away, the jungle shook as if large animals were fighting, but no animal roars could be heard.
After watching for a while, he prepared to leave. However, at that moment, he felt something fling onto his arm. Looking down, he saw a red snake as thick as a finger. Its pair of fangs were stuck on his protective suit, fiercely struggling.
This was a specially evolved poisonous snake, completely red with no other markings, but it had two pairs of white eyes side by side.
The toxin on the suit did not bring it down, and of course, neither did it bring down Xu Huo. Facing off with the snake, Xu Huo took out his communicator and recorded it thoroughly. Afterward, he looked at the canopy, which was nearly devoid of poisonous insects, found a small cage, smeared it with sticky potion, and then tossed the snake inside.
The small snake hissed spiritedly within the cage, but its movement was limited as its tail was stuck. It followed Xu Huo’s hand in a circle and eventually received a sticker with the number "2".
Xu Huo attached the cage to his waist and returned to the grove, walking away from the location of the mutant animal fight.
Perhaps due to the commotion, the nearby animals had all fled. He didn’t find any other reptiles and so considered looking for a nearby water source.
Just as he was about to change direction, he suddenly halted and reflexively held up "Eye of the Deceased" in front of him. The next second, a massive beast paw struck the sword, sending him flying three meters backward. Then, a human-sized green-skinned Big Tiger leaped out of the woods and lunged at his head with its mouth open!
"Clang!" Xu Huo ignited a fire, and the fluffy alien beast was instantly enveloped in flames. It howled, rolling on the ground, and soon vines hanging from a giant tree quickly descended.
At first, Xu Huo thought it was another mutant plant, but he quickly spotted fangs similar to those of a mammal among the vines. As leaves fell with the descending vines, the ground also violently shook and rose.
Realizing he had entered the mouth of some gigantic creature, he quickly summoned "Emergency Shelter 101" and wedged it between two closing rows of teeth before dashing out and retrieving the prop. Utilizing the characteristic "Straight-Line Distance," he moved a hundred meters away before turning back to look:
It was a creature the scale of a small floating island, with a physique more akin to a sea animal. Yet, it was covered in greenery, obscuring its true form. After consuming the ablaze Big Tiger, it settled silently onto the ground. Once the rustling of the bushes quieted, there was no trace of the large animal’s movements.
"Lucky break." Xu Huo patted the small cage on his waist, climbed back up the tree to look for a water source, but this time he was even more vigilant. Some animals had evolved to easily mask their breathing sounds, making it harder to detect them in advance.
The vegetation was too dense, and water sources were not so easily found. However, he stumbled upon several monkeys with their tails coiled around small buckets, forming a line as they moved through the trees.
