Chapter 843: Chapter 843: Unqualified
"The concept of time is not the same as the concept of space you mentioned," Xu Huo said. "What you’re talking about manipulating objects focuses on the external, changing the state of the object is internal."
"Pretty much," Bai Kou replied with a smile. "Many things require understanding one thing to understand all; you’re a smart person, maybe you can apply this reasoning broadly."
"Why the sarcasm?" Xu Huo sipped his tea. "Even Super Players might not achieve this extent."
Bai Kou laughed, noting that he wasn’t playing dumb this time, and added, "It’s about luck; maybe you’ll stumble upon it someday. You probably had no idea about Super Evolution before your Spirit Evolution."
"No Super Props aiding Super Evolution?" Xu Huo asked. Knowing the principle of Super Evolution, it was impossible that no one had tackled it from this direction.
"I have one," Bai Kou leaned forward slightly, her hands crossed under her chin, "But why would I help you?"
Without hesitation, Xu Huo replied, "I’ll exchange it for a secret from District 001."
"You don’t even know what District 001 is," Bai Kou immediately frowned. "Ripping benefits out of thin air, you’re quite adept at that, aren’t you curious about what He Pu left behind?"
"Upgrading is the most crucial thing for me right now," Xu Huo stated.
"Advancing from Level D to Rank-C isn’t hard; achieving several ’S’ ratings in evaluations would suffice," Bai Kou sat back in her chair. "That won’t work, pick another."
"It’s your turn to set the demand," Xu Huo gestured with a hand.
Bai Kou smiled. "Lend me a Super Prop to play with."
Xu Huo pointed to the Girl in the Painting beside them who, though pretending to prune branches, was actually sneaking cake. "Help yourself."
With a look of disdain, Bai Kou glanced at her and turned back, asking, "That’s your Super Prop?"
All Xu Huo could do was smile wryly. "Then I’m out of options, I don’t have a second Super Prop."
Bai Kou didn’t dwell on this issue and asked Mr. Dong to bring fresh tea.
After Mr. Dong left, the few in the garden remained silent, but Xu Huo occasionally felt the gaze of the person opposite him—perhaps she wouldn’t let this go so easily.
By the afternoon, Xu Huo received a reply from Shi Youzhi.
The instruction was simple, informing him that he was on a break, temporarily not needing to report to the base, exact return to work date unknown, and all base personnel would leave Zone 011 until the base was operational again.
It seemed there was nothing of importance at the base.
Furthermore, Xu Huo checked the official statement from Zone 011. Currently, only the contamination event in Base City was publicized. Specifically, the Holy Sword Society had released a toxin capable of devolving individuals in an attempt to destroy Base City. However, thanks to the sacrifice of players from Zone 011, the spread of the toxin was successfully controlled. It was still not suitable for inhabitation until the city was cleansed, but residents were assured not to panic as the toxin levels in the air were minimal and not likely to cause evolution or mutation in humans. Anyone showing signs of poisoning could visit the Municipal Government’s temporary office for a check-up and, if confirmed, receive antitoxin and a compensation for emotional distress.
The blame was squarely placed on the Holy Sword Society.
Xu Huo watched the city repair updates and turned his attention to the box hidden by Director San Yang.
With arrangements made by the base, Director San Yang’s appearance near the area at that time was odd. He knew Wan Tingfang and she had intentionally run back even after learning it might be a trap, indicating that both had other identities.
It was not yet certain if they were members of the Holy Sword Society, but the object Director San Yang had left could well be bait.
Whether it was secretly moved from the base or obtained through other channels, it wasn’t taken immediately but deliberately buried in an underground pipe, wrapped with a conspicuous remnant of an alien, likely attracting players from Zone 011.
But targeting a few players meant to clean the city would hardly need such fuss; even if the box ended up with an Advanced Player, its effectiveness was questionable.
With Black Epaulettes all around the city, he decided not to add to the commotion.
Before dinner, Black Epaulettes arrived with patrol robots at the castle just to inquire if anyone had seen any injured players or noticed any other unusual activities in the last day.
There were also patrol robots and monitors in the Ancient City District; there was really no need for redundancy.
"They brought robots to check for players from other zones," Mr. Dong said. "New faces are scrutinized."
And the method of scrutiny? Zone 011 naturally had its own means.
"It’s merely a matter of matching with previously obtained player information," Bai Kou noted. "But those who could run have run, and those who were to be killed have been killed, mostly an exercise in futility."
"It’s like casting a wide net to fish; catching even one is enough," Xu Huo remarked. "Besides, the Zone 011 Government cares deeply about the citizens’ happiness."
Bai Kou was left with only a sneer.
The investigation didn’t last long, and right after Black Epaulettes left, the Zone 011 Government announced that the contamination within the city had been cleaned up. The next stage would involve city repair, and all primary city residents were free to relocate to nearby cities; the government would arrange this at no charge.
Thanks to wartime strategies and welfare policies, despite the magnitude of the incident, there was little dissatisfaction with the government, and the tone on all communication platforms was quite positive.
Compared to other districts whose governments had failed to respond effectively to attacks, Zone 011 was considerably stable.
After dinner, Xu Huo checked the Nüwa Stone and then went to the study to look over the materials left by He Pu, staying up until late into the night. Suddenly, the light in the room went out, and for some reason, he just collapsed onto the desk and fell asleep.
In his blurred consciousness, he was awoken by someone.
The brightly lit room was filled with the scent of flowers, and the man who woke him, dressed in white, gently said, "Too tired? Want to sleep a bit?"
Xu Huo shook his head, his gaze shifting upward, but he couldn’t clearly see the man’s face; his face was entwined with the window scenery behind, blurred and elusive.
"You did your work very well today, you can rest for a while," the man set a leather case on the desk, adjusting the syringe filled with the potion inside.
"Doctor, is my condition worsening?" Xu Huo blurted out, his voice not matching his own.
"You’re recovering well. This is just a nutrition shot," the doctor motioned for his arm, "It’s good for your body."
"None of the other kids are getting shots," his voice carried a mix of whimpering and coyness, "I don’t want it either."
The potion was injected into the child’s slender arm, and the doctor reached out to pat his head, "You’re my favorite child, different from the others."
After saying that, he peeled a candy and fed it to him.
Xu Huo saw a wound on the back of his hand and carefully touched it, "Does it hurt?"
The doctor fell silent in that moment, the atmosphere turning cold; he withdrew his hand, saying coldly, "You failed today’s test."
