Chapter 834: Chapter 834: In the Dark
Certain props or characteristics could only be used under specific conditions, and Jin Feixue returning to the building was in itself a lapse, which is why Ashis had started from this angle.
However, the golden, stage-like screen was a huge trap. Whether there were other props inside remains unknown, but Zone 011 players could not easily approach Jin Feixue.
To minimize losses and increase efficiency, the control room activated thermal weapons aimed at the building, which demolished the structure below, much like—if Jin Feixue’s prop needed to rely on actual objects.
Unexpectedly, two of the cannon barrels shifted direction and fired at their own weapons, immediately destroying three weapon platforms!
These weapons, usually stored underground and only brought out during war, not only damaged the weaponry but also destroyed some pressure-resistant protection and buildings.
Base City became chaotic again, with multiple suicides or explosions occurring simultaneously as rescue efforts began.
"Dou Shengnan made her move," Xu Huo said.
"Dou Shengnan is that hypnosis expert from the Guile Sound Knights." Yan Jiayu looked solemn. "I haven’t forgotten the scene of people crowding to jump off the Hai City Building."
"Finding her now will be a bit difficult," Xu Huo added.
Dou Shengnan was famous for controlling others with hypnosis. In a place like Zone 011, she definitely wouldn’t just encircle an area and blackmail the government like she would in Zone 014. The most reasonable method was to manipulate targets in advance, causing chaos inside Zone 011 while Jin Feixue drew people’s attention.
He pulled out his communicator to check the current reported accident locations and discovered that, aside from the Eternal Star Hotel and several government departments, an alarm had gone off at the Game Government Base.
"Why would there be an alarm at the base?" Yan Jiayu asked. "If the Guile Sound Knights are seeking revenge for their comrades, they should directly target the Zone 011 Government, not cause conflict with the base, which benefits them in no way."
The staff inside the Game Government Base, although not high-level players on the surface, possessed many props. To protect the base’s contents, each floor was equipped with props, and they could use the most advanced weapons—fighting them would only add a formidable enemy without any benefit.
Moreover, the base generally didn’t interfere in district affairs; even if the Guile Sound Knights obliterated Zone 011, they might not get involved.
"It’s also possible that someone took advantage of the chaos to break in," Xu Huo said.
There were signs of Holy Sword Society activity in other parts of Zone 011. If members of the Holy Sword Society also infiltrated, they could target the base while the Guile Sound Knights made their move.
"But we can’t rule out another objective for the Guile Sound Knights," he continued. "This act of revenge is too theatrical."
The base’s existence was not only for repairing tracks but also for transferring experimental samples from different districts. The Holy Sword Society had been frequently active in other sub-districts of Zone 011, and the presence of the Guile Sound Knights was too coincidental.
After exchanging a look with Yan Jiayu, "Let’s go check it out."
The two promptly turned around and rushed towards the Game Government Base.
Upon arrival, the entire base had already been sealed off. The robots that usually operated outside lined up on the ground and in the air surrounding the building, weapons uniformly pointing outward.
Occasionally, sounds of fighting could be heard inside the base, but no figures in motion or cries for help were seen or heard, even the internal alarm sounds had been turned off.
"Someone’s already gone in," Yan Jiayu turned to look at him, "but no base players have rushed over."
These past few days, the base wasn’t busy.
Shi Youzhi had taken a team on a mission and hadn’t returned yet. Without the need for overtime, few people stayed at the base, but that didn’t mean it was unattended. Since the alarm was successfully activated, Director San Yang and others must have received the notification, yet not a single one had shown up, and the armed robots uniformly faced outward...
"There might be someone inside," Xu Huo said.
He had never ventured above the fifth floor of the base building. What was up there, whether any players were guarding it, he had no idea, but in this moment, his instincts told him the base was as dangerous as the Eternal Star Hotel.
He quickly flashed through the faces of Bai Kou, Jin Feixue, Director San Yang, and Dr. Deng in his mind. Leaked information by Dr. Deng, the unusual activity of the Holy Sword Society, and other events seemed to have a vague connection, but unfortunately, the lack of information prevented him from making a basic judgment.
"What are you doing here?" Wan Tingfang ran over from a distance, looking around, "Why don’t I see anyone else?"
Just as Xu Huo was about to speak, he saw a surge of black energy pour out from inside the base building. Unlike black smoke, this was like night stripped of light, and almost instantly as he saw this, the black covered the entire exterior of the base, leaving no room for reaction, and his vision went pitch black!
He could see in the night, but this unnatural blackness not only robbed him of his vision but also deprived him of his hearing and smell. Reaching out, not surprisingly, he found neither Yan Jiayu nor Wan Tingfang.
The layout outside the base had changed.
Having previously experienced Jiang Jiang’s Octagonal Gallery, Xu Huo wasn’t surprised by another scene-prop, but judging by his spatial perception, this seemed to have turned into a wasteland.
The only direct contact he had in the quiet space was with the ground under his feet, which felt like an ordinary patch of grass when stepped on. There were no trees or other obstacles around; he could move around freely, with no one or any animals approaching—clearly, he was trapped in an Advanced Player’s battlefield.
After slight hesitation, he did not attempt to open any gates within the prop but followed his instincts forward. About five minutes later, a light appeared ahead, which upon closer inspection turned out to be a small hut with a few square meters, with a sign hanging on the door that read:
"Safe House."
"You can take shelter here for thirty minutes until the black fog lifts."
Still hesitant, the darkness shifted anew, and suddenly Xu Huo felt a pressure from the air; instantly, even his breathing unconsciously tightened. He quickly pulled open the safe house door, stepped inside, and as he closed the door, the pervasive, suffocating pressure disappeared.
Inside, there was a chair and a table set with tea, the kettle even still containing hot water. A gemstone appraisal magazine lay next to it, making the place look more like a leisure spot.
Xu Huo walked over, sat down, brewed himself some tea, and flipped through the magazine.
The magazine wasn’t brand new; water stains were on it. Apart from that, the room also showed traces of being smashed and attacked, indicating he wasn’t the first to arrive here.
