Chapter 708: Chapter 708: A Thrilling Night Tour of the Ancient Castle
Dr. Deng’s matter could be put on hold for the moment, as Xu Huo, after visiting the Duchess, was headed to Rose Castle to host the banquet.
The day before the banquet, Xu Huo’s companion, Angel, arrived at the castle ahead of time, mainly to coordinate the dance rehearsal.
Originally, Xu Huo had planned to send Angel back after the dance rehearsal, but she was unwilling to leave and coquettishly proposed to stay at the castle for a night to enjoy the Garden Maze in the evening.
Xu Huo didn’t insist on sending her away and asked Mr. Dong to show her around, while he himself returned to the study.
Accompanied by Mr. Dong, Angel pouted and said, "I didn’t expect the Baron to be so unromantic, not even accompanying the guest. What could be more important than your companion?"
Mr. Dong was very adept at dealing with noble young ladies. "Sir is preparing for tomorrow’s banquet. There are too many guests, and as a host, he must not be rude."
The charming and cute Angel reluctantly accepted this reason and yawned, "Forget it, I’m not in the mood to wander anymore. Where is my room?"
Mr. Dong took her to a guest room on the second floor, and after preparing everything she requested, he said before leaving, "Miss Angel, the castle has recently been modified, and it’s easy to get lost. After nightfall, it’s better not to wander around. If you need anything, you can ring the bell."
Angel waved her hand impatiently, indicating she understood.
Mr. Dong left.
Soon it was nighttime, and perhaps due to the swift change in weather, it began to rain outside, accompanied by fog, plunging the mostly darkened castle into a dense darkness.
After midnight, the door to the second-floor guest room suddenly opened. Angel, who had shed her cumbersome gown for a comfortable nightgown, appeared barefoot in the hallway.
Without any lighting tools, she tiptoed along the dimly lit corridor towards the staircase.
"Crack!" Suddenly, the light flickered. Angel nervously looked back but saw the flitting lamp flare up after a few flickers, reassuring her. As she turned to continue forward, she briefly sensed a dark shadow flash by her side!
She widened her eyes and stared at the opposite wall, which was just as elegant and beautifully patterned as before.
Rubbing her eyes, she let go of her suspicion and continued forward, but after walking a bit, she felt something was off. Standing under a hallway lamp, she looked back and forth: Was the corridor in the castle always this long? And the area near the staircase was too dark!
Angel hesitated, but quickly made up her mind, took a lamp, and found the staircase.
Feeling relieved when she saw the staircase, she had not yet fully exhaled when suddenly, all the lights in the corridor went out!
Not just the second-floor corridor, but also the faint lights from the first and third floors that had been seen earlier, all went out, leaving only the lamp in her hand alight.
Darkness closed in from all sides, and Angel reflexively froze in place for a few seconds before she could move again.
Fortunately, there was still a faint skylight coming in from outside, preventing complete darkness within the castle.
However, as she was heading towards the third floor, she looked up at the staircase and thought she saw the hem of a dress flutter past.
"Miss Xu, is that you?" Angel asked in a hushed voice.
There was no response on the third floor, nor any sound at all; it wasn’t until she had walked up that she noticed a beauty painted on paper pinned along the edge of the corridor, the margins of the paper white.
It seemed what she had seen earlier was just the paper.
Angel glanced at it and moved on, but the moment her gaze shifted away, the paper on the wall fluttered down, landing on the floor and transforming into a young woman wearing a white nightgown.
The Girl in the painting looked slightly different from when she had seen her during the day, curiously following a few steps behind her. Finding Angel was only looking around with her lamp, she quickly lost interest and turned back to her own room.
The paper rustled as it passed through the crack under the door, startling Angel who immediately turned around, holding her lamp high to peer into the distance.
The stairs were too far away to see clearly, but there was nothing nearby.
She took two uncertain steps back, and only after confirming there was indeed nothing in the corridor did she turn around. That’s when she realized the painting on the wall was gone!
Angel took a step back sharply, but the next second, she stepped forward to inspect the spot: the painting was indeed a bit strange. All the decorations in the corridors of Rose Castle were uniform, and even the paintings were framed, though the styles were somewhat eerie. It was unusual for just a piece of paper to be pasted there.
Having an ominous feeling, she looked ahead down the corridor only to be shocked to find that it seemed to have no end. The same patterns extended endlessly, and the symmetrical fixtures and paintings on both sides repeated over and over, making the whole corridor eerie!
Angel turned to leave, but as she stepped onto the stairs, she saw something wriggling in one of the picture frames...
The dim light shifted, and the thing in the frame also turned: long black hair hanging down, a face so covered in red blotches that its features were nearly imperceptible, eyes bulging as if they might fall out at any moment... and upon contact with the light, those eyes suddenly jerked to the side!
Angel dropped the lamp and ran, looking back only to see more writhing figures appearing in the picture frames behind her, even strange hands and feet stretching out from within!
"Aaaaah!" She couldn’t hold back her screams as she frantically slapped at and twisted door handles on either side, but the castle seemed empty, and no one came out. Finally, she managed to open a door only to find a dead wall behind it!
"Bang! Bang! Bang!" Angel kept opening doors incessantly, but those she could open were either weirdly narrow spaces or normal rooms that also contained the same type of picture frames.
In her frantic dash forward, she finally spotted a window at the end of the hall!
Without a moment’s hesitation, she jumped straight out from the third floor!
The fall from the third floor wasn’t light, but Angel was quite fit. Glancing back at the distorted faces plastered on the castle wall, she scrambled into the garden.
The castle was connected first to a conservatory, then to the Garden Maze. The corridors in the conservatory had been altered later, and with numerous towering plants, Angel got lost as soon as she entered, twisting and turning without finding an exit. But she was clever, picking a relatively open spot to look towards the castle and then running in the opposite direction.
With her persistence, she eventually made it into the Garden Maze.
Though the path of the maze lay before her, with too many branches, Angel realized after a few turns that she was lost again. Unable to find her way back, and with the endless staircases becoming ever more difficult to traverse than a flat path, she had already fallen several times in her panic!
