Chapter 702: Chapter 702 Smuggling in Orbit
The Duchess seemed to be in a talking mood as she waved her fan, "Not to mention the lower five zones, even if you count all the zones in the E27 Wormhole Point, Zone 011 is relatively peaceful and stable. To this day, there are still some zones that have fallen to the Aliens, where all living creatures suffer and the remaining humans huddle in a few small safe areas, struggling even to drink water and eat food."
"Has madam ever visited these places?" Selin inquired.
"Zone 011 must maintain relations with other zones, and comings and goings are indispensable," the Duchess replied indifferently.
She didn’t mention what value a zone mostly occupied by Aliens would have for trading with Zone 011.
"I’ve been to many places, and after all is said and done, I still think Zone 011 is the best," the Duchess said, taking a sip of her drink, "If someday all the game zones become like Zone 011, that would truly be an era of universal peace."
Xu Huo and Selin both just smiled and did not speak.
All become like Zone 011?
Zone 011 is not as peaceful as it appears on the surface. There are conflicts between incoming players and local powers, and the government factions are also fiercely contesting with each other. To shift these conflicts, Zone 011 is turning its attention to other game zones.
Put bluntly, it’s a war of expansion. Zone 011 could use advanced weaponry and its strong player base to plunder resources, otherwise, several game zones wouldn’t have combined to form today’s Zone 011 situation.
The Duchess appeared to loathe the game, but in reality, she was the same kind of person as Ran Ying—analogous reasons but identical goals.
"By the way, you’ve just inherited the castle. It’s customary to hold a banquet. If you want to do charity work, that’s the first step," the Duchess said.
Xu Huo nodded, "I’m already preparing it; I’ll be honored by your presence, madam."
The Duchess covered her mouth with a smile, "I’ll bring a few extra friends with me."
After a few more words, the Duchess left, and Xu Huo went directly to the game’s headquarters.
Passing through the headquarters’ security zone, he picked up two boxes and rescued Wan Tingfang, who had almost been buried underneath.
"You’re back!" Wan Tingfang’s eyes lit up as she quickly said, "Hurry and help, these things are so heavy!"
Xu Huo felt the weight as well, "Are these stones? Why didn’t you use a vehicle to transport them?"
"All the indoor vehicles have been requisitioned," Wan Tingfang explained, "The director wouldn’t let us use props, so we had to move them ourselves."
"This stuff weighs more than stones. Captain Shi said it’s a rare ore brought back for sampling," she said.
Helping with the boxes, Xu Huo asked, "Is this from the task we had before?"
"Exactly," Wan Tingfang said: "It’s my first time hearing about smuggling ore, the dimensional train, oh my, people actually smuggling ore, quite fascinating."
"The train’s attendants are all volunteers, so it’s not strange for some to carry a bit of smuggled goods to earn money," Xu Huo remarked.
But such ores could be stored in the luggage compartment.
"You’re absolutely right, it was done by an attendant," Wan Tingfang spilled the whole story about the mission, "Originally, we were notified about a railway repair, but upon arrival, it turned out that the dimensional train was overweight!"
"Can you believe that? An overweight dimensional train!"
"Even Captain Shi found it peculiar. After inspecting several nearby stations, they intercepted that train—loaded entirely with ore, sealing off a station to catch it."
"However, the director said there might be some radioactive ores mixed in that could interfere with the railway. We brought back a batch for a final check."
"Radioactive ores? Won’t they harm the human body?" Xu Huo asked.
"It’s been checked, they say the impact is minimal," Wan Tingfang said nonchalantly: "Besides, we go in and out of the game daily, have been to many places with mutated ores, and never saw much harm."
Chatting, they went upstairs where they met She Ping and Cai Xiangxiang, who were also helping to categorize the ore; several offices had been taken over by ores, and the Orbital Supply Department members were all covered in dust.
Shi Youzhi was classifying each piece of ore with a detector. Seeing Xu Huo, he simply nodded, handed him a detector, and asked for his assistance.
With the detector in hand, Xu Huo sorted the ores in the boxes with Wan Tingfang’s help; as the detector swept over them, alphanumeric codes and categories immediately displayed on the screen.
He scanned for a while and noticed the ores didn’t have specific names, just alphanumeric codes.
"If the detector can’t identify it, does that mean it’s a new type of ore?" Wan Tingfang asked Shi Youzhi, "If we discover a new ore, will there be a reward?"
Cai Xiangxiang laughed nearby, "Why do you always think about such good fortunes? If it cannot be scanned, it’s mostly because it contains a mix of elements, too complex for a basic detector to classify. It requires more precise instruments for testing."
"Those that we can categorize using our detectors are usually ores where a single element constitutes more than thirty percent of its composition. The classification isn’t really accurate, but it’s sufficient for a preliminary screening."
Wan Tingfang let out a sigh, "I thought so."
"But an ore that can affect the railroad must be impressive, right? Was it never discovered before?" she pondered and then said, "If these ores were everywhere, the railroad couldn’t run, and wouldn’t we then be free of doing instances?"
"Have you forgotten about the trial train?" Xu Huo added from the side.
The first time they took a train, they didn’t pass through a station.
Wan Tingfang caught on and shook her head reluctantly, "True."
"Since the train can be used for smuggling, could someone use it to transport weapons?" Xu Huo asked.
"That’s different," Shi Youzhi answered, "players aren’t allowed to bring certain weapons onto trains—that’s a mandatory rule. Even if you carry them, they’ll be taken away at the station."
"The game’s screening of weapons and ores is different. Even if someone managed to bring weapons on board through special means, they wouldn’t get far on the tracks."
"If there’s a large quantity of weapons with high destructive power, the Game Government would intervene immediately. You might not even make it from one station to the next before getting caught—a loss-making proposition."
"If the number is small, bringing them on board isn’t really useful; it wouldn’t be any better than a regular prop."
Shi Youzhi was right—higher Player Levels meant more items and attributes, reducing the need for conventional firearms. Forget about dodging bullets in a 360-degree arc; catching them barehanded wasn’t a problem.
Given that weapons can’t be placed in the luggage compartment, players can only carry a limited number on their person.
"Guns are less useful than props," Wan Tingfang remarked, "Carrying a couple of guns on the train is just embarrassing; it’s better to have props, compact and convenient."
"Once I reach a high Player Level, I’ll definitely purchase two advanced props. They look good and are practical to wear, unlike now, where I feel like I need to hang every prop on me when I head out, looking like a Christmas tree."
