Chapter 676: Chapter 676 Unspeakable

Yi Pei had stayed here until evening without returning to her own room.

Meanwhile, Xu Huo had been sitting by the window the whole time, observing the outside through a lifted corner of the curtain.

In fact, there wasn’t much to see outside; the hotel was situated at the end of a crossroad in the county town. Just a few steps further was a bare stretch of road, with a forest beyond.

Opposite the main entrance were a few businesses which had closed their doors as soon as night fell.

There was a street lamp in front of the hotel, and the next one was about twenty meters away. Now that night had fallen, the areas between the lights were growing indistinct, and there were hardly any people around.

The locals had already started to lock up their homes one after another, and the players who had been out wandering had returned to the hotel.

After night deepened, a fog slowly began to envelop the outside.

Yi Pei sat near the door, silently waiting. After two hours, she finally couldn’t help but say, "It must be almost midnight, right? You probably can’t see anything outside now."

Xu Huo shook his head at her, signaling for her to keep quiet.

About three minutes later, someone knocked on his door.

Yi Pei stood up abruptly and instinctively looked at Xu Huo. He walked over to the door, stopped her from trying to look through the peephole, and holding the "Silent Figurine" asked, "Who is it?"

"It’s me," the voice of the administrator came from outside the door. "I’ve come to collect the money."

Xu Huo stood behind the door and silently smirked. "How can you prove your identity?"

There was a moment of silence outside, "How else do I need to prove it? Can’t you see?"

Yi Pei thought it was her turn and leaned forward slightly, but before her hand could touch the peephole cover, Xu Huo suddenly opened the door and directly pulled the administrator inside!

The astonishment on the administrator’s face turned into terror in an instant. Unfortunately, when he turned to look back, he found that the door had already closed silently, and Yi Pei was standing in front of it, blocking the way out.

"What do you guys want?" the administrator said with a face that was fierce on the surface but fearful at heart. "You already caused me trouble during the day; isn’t this enough?"

"Don’t be nervous." Xu Huo didn’t seem as impatient as he had earlier in the day. He not only refrained from being violent but even loosened his grip. "I just want to ask you a few simple questions."

"I don’t know anything!" The administrator asked Yi Pei to make way. "Otherwise, I’ll call for help!"

"If I were you, I wouldn’t yell carelessly," Xu Huo said from behind him. "If other players knew that you were the one knocking on doors at night, you would have no chance of survival."

The administrator’s face twitched, and he tried to feign ignorance in hopes of muddling through, but Yi Pei, standing beside him, grabbed the back of his neck and pressed his face up to the peephole. "In that case, why don’t you take a look?"

She pretended to open the peephole while the administrator, having been pushed forward, reflexively closed his eyes and shouted, "I am a person of Sifang Palace City, protected by the gods. If you dare to do this to me, you will surely die! And those people from the day, they will all die too!"

"Crack!" Yi Pei broke his shoulder bone with one hand, and after he had finished screaming, she said, "Call the god you believe in to save you."

The administrator was drenched in sweat, shaking like a leaf, but still refused to beg for mercy, repeating words related to "god" and "punishment."

Xu Huo signaled Yi Pei to let the man go and, looking at the person who had fallen to his knees, said, "The people of Sifang Palace City hold a profound reverence for the god they worship; it doesn’t seem to be a matter of being cowardly or afraid of death."

"You worship a god yourselves, yet dare not face it and fear mirrors, so this god must be related to eyes, right?"

"It’s alright if you can’t tell the truth; I’ll ask and you just nod or shake your head."

The manager cowered against the door, hugging his arms, "I don’t know anything, don’t ask me..."

Xu Huo lifted his head, staring at his face, and said, "Aside from the tourists, the local people of Sifang Palace City must also have died in no small numbers."

"It seems that even without tourists, people here would still go missing."

"Whether they’re from here or not, everyone becomes a target. It’s better for outsiders to die than our own. You lure guests into your homes, into your hotels, just so they can see the statue of the deity, to die in your place, right!"

The manager’s pupils contracted, his face changing color several times.

Seeing this, Xu Huo sneered and pulled the man into the restroom, smashing his head against the mirror through a towel, with just enough force to crack the mirror without shattering it.

"Stop! Please stop!" The manager screamed in panic.

"Is the statue of the deity hidden behind the mirror?" Xu Huo pressed harder.

The manager dared not open his eyes, pleading nonstop.

Xu Huo’s gaze darkened, he reached for the towel, and as he did so, the manager felt his eyelids being lifted, his eyes trembling uncontrollably, "I’ll die, I’ll die, I’ll die, I’ll die...!"

In just a few seconds, veins bulged on his forehead, his eyeballs filled with blood, his gaze fixed straight ahead, then fear flashed across his face, before he suddenly struggled free of Xu Huo’s grip and charged headfirst into the wall!

Of course, Xu Huo wasn’t about to let him die so easily, and knocked him out cold.

The unconscious manager, though bloody-faced, looked somewhat more normal than before.

Yi Pei couldn’t hide her surprise, "The local people aren’t allowed to reveal its true nature... No wonder those people, even when dying at the hands of players, wouldn’t spit out a single useful thing."

"I didn’t expect this deity to be so formidable; now I’m a bit curious about what the statue actually looks like," she said as she actually started walking towards the mirror.

"What are you doing?" Xu Huo quickly grabbed her hand.

Yi Pei paused, "I’m just curious, and besides, aren’t you also interested in what exactly this so-called deity is?"

"The situation is different now," Xu Huo said gravely.

The danger posed by the deity worshipped in Sifang Palace City had exceeded his expectations.

The hostel demanded that guests stay alone, which was actually the locals protecting themselves. They were no match for the players. If more than one person stayed, it could happen that one was affected while the other wasn’t. As long as one person remained alive, they would not be well off. In contrast, solitary players, even if they disappeared, wouldn’t immediately lead to others coming to cause trouble.

Of course, this was also to avoid the statue. Like the hotel guests are individual; if affected, they would vanish without a trace, leaving no impact on others.

The hotel was arranged differently, with peepholes, mirrors, and reliefs all potentially causing several players to be affected at once.

It might seem impossible to believe. If it is because one "sees" the deity that triggers the copy’s killing condition, then simply "not looking" should suffice. One could close their eyes, avoid looking directly, or even stay out of sight within the same room—it wouldn’t be difficult.

But here lays the issue; does simply closing one’s eyes or avoiding the gaze truly equate to "not seeing" the deity?

It’s not about literally seeing. Perhaps the statue itself can capture one’s gaze, and just being in the same space might meet the criteria of "seeing." This principle applies to props as well.

You Jun and Wei Xian were in the same room. The former disappeared, and the latter was unharmed. It’s not impossible that Wei Xian possesses a high-level prop, but if there is something in the room that couldn’t be seen by both, then the peephole is the only option.
