Chapter 664: Chapter 664: Indifferent to Their Life and Death
Xu Huo successively used two Rank-B props, four Rank-C Items, and one special item.
"Moving Metal" and "Extreme Fatigue" as well as "Progress Bar Disappearance" were employed for foundational defense, followed by the use of "Important Call" and "Danger Blinds" to control the opponent’s hand and eyes, "Crimson Sword" for reinforcement, and then topping it off with "Joyful Invisibility" to blend into the surroundings.
His real objective wasn’t to kill the player in front of him, if there was a chance to run, he surely would take it—and of course, Nicks wasn’t that easy to kill, because in the short duration while the electric light had yet to dissipate, the opponent had used a variety of props.
First, Xu Huo felt a moment of dizziness, then randomly a piece of equipment he was wearing dropped, followed by a weakness in his legs that made it impossible to walk, and then the plaza’s floor tiles fused into two or three-meter-long spikes thrusting diagonally towards him!
"Ding! Ding!" The Moving Metal blocked the two long spikes, and as the duration of the opponent’s items shortened, Xu Huo quickly escaped from the spot, darting into a shop near the plaza while the Girl in the Painting entangled Nicks.
"Homologous Locator" detected quite a few players approaching, all of whom would arrive at the plaza in less than ten seconds. He glanced at the cashier of the shop and walked straight into the staff room, closing the door behind him.
Footsteps hurried away outside, Xu Huo released his Spiritual World, pulling the narrow staff room and the storeroom together, cut a door into the wall of the staff room, stepped into the storeroom, smashed the light switch, and pulled out the wires inside.
By this time, a large group of players had arrived at the plaza, and at the moment they saw Nicks and the Girl in the Painting engage, they began to use their props and abilities. However, due to the large number of people, collisions were inevitable. Even Nicks, caught in the middle, was affected. Taking another glance at the Girl in the Painting, who was completely unaffected by the props’ effects, he retreated and commanded, "Weapon up!"
The players quickly split into two groups, one chasing the Girl in the Painting, the other surrounding the shop. Since there were more people inside and outside the store, those players didn’t dare to blow up the building directly but instead chose to send people into the shop.
Following the cashier’s directions, the players flooded into the staff room, but it was empty.
"Did he escape?" They then checked the adjacent storeroom but found no one there either.
"Boom!" A particularly ear-piercing explosion came from the plaza outside, and the players immediately rushed out, only to see the Girl in the Painting lifting the stone spheres created by the players’ props into the air and then flicking them towards the nearby shops like marbles!
The scene quickly descended into chaos, with the crowd jostling the players, while the Girl in the Painting just needed to hover in the air to keep most of the players at bay.
"Shoot her down!" Nicks snatched a submachine gun from his subordinate and fired at the Girl in the Painting in the sky.
This move didn’t have much effect on the Girl in the Painting, but she disliked being hit by bullets, so she took the initiative to fly away from the plaza toward a nearby glittering tower.
"Shiiish!" Just then, a large net suddenly flashed in the air, and the Girl in the Painting slammed into it. With a stream of abnormal-colored electric current, she plummeted downward.
"Got her!" A few players were waiting nearby, and without waiting for her to fall, they stepped forward with tranquilizer guns and electric nets, while others used sniper rifles from a distance.
The upside-down Girl in the Painting avoided the sniper bullets using her descent, closed her eyes pretending to be unconscious. Only when she closed the distance with the players did she suddenly open her eyes and from her sleeves, a few paper-cut shapes resembling little swords flew out, cleanly slicing through the throats of several players.
"Why..." one of them gasped, his voice failing as he clutched at his throat.
He probably wanted to ask why their props had no effect on the Girl in the Painting, even if they used props for evasion, she still shouldn’t have been completely unaffected.
The Girl in the Painting wasn’t interested in the dead. Seeing more players rushing over, she giggled and ran into the nearby building.
There were quite a few people inside the building who hadn’t had time to evacuate. When the players entered, they simply fired their guns and ordered everyone to crouch down.
Most of the people complied, leaving only some crying children standing still, and others holding their heads and hiding in the corners.
The players searched around but found nothing. They then checked again using props but discovered that there were no other players in the building besides them!
"Damn! She got away!"
A team of players was fuming after failing to catch the main culprit when a little girl pointed at the ceiling and said, "There’s dust up there!"
Everyone turned and saw dust falling from a huge crystal chandelier. A player with good eyesight noticed that the metal at the base was disintegrating and immediately shouted, dashing to move people away from under the chandelier.
"Retreat! Retreat!" The news of the previous safe zone being destroyed hadn’t spread here yet, and the players were unclear about the current situation, but to minimize casualties, they began evacuating everyone outside.
However, after getting out, they realized that the players who had arrived were all joining the evacuation team, with someone shouting, "The intruder has the ability to disintegrate the metal of an entire city, everyone stay away from buildings!"
With these cries, objects continued to disintegrate around them, and buildings collapsed. Looking around, the safe zone was already enveloped in dust and smoke.
This safe zone is done for!
Without the support of metal objects, all the city’s buildings would become dangerous structures. Fortunately, not so many people had moved into this safe zone yet; many of the buildings wouldn’t collapse for the time being, leaving some extra time to evacuate.
However, when rescue convoys started arriving from all directions, the underground structures, lacking metal supports, also began collapsing in many places, which in turn accelerated the collapse of the surrounding buildings. Buildings adjacent to one another fell in a domino effect, continually repeating the tragedy.
"Everyone off the vehicles!" government officials ordered, but in such a situation, even players were powerless, what could ordinary people possibly change?
"Another safe zone is ruined," Nicks said as he entered an empty store. But as he stood outside the break room door, the aura coming from within instinctively made him halt. Feeling that Xu Huo hadn’t left, he asked, "Why are you doing this? So many innocent people are dying horribly, they too have family—parents, siblings, children. It’s already tragic that they’ve become ordinary people in the age of players, can you really be so merciless?"
"Ordinary people aren’t inherently tragic. It’s true they’re not as strong as players, but players are limited, whereas ordinary people are limitless. Otherwise, who would have created those high-destructivity weapons in the game?" Xu Huo’s voice came from behind the door, seemingly from the left and right, elusive and intangible.
"The tragedy of ordinary people is that they have to pay for their own country’s government and the wrongful actions of players."
"You all seem to sympathize with others, yet you regard their lives with indifference."
