Chapter 660: Chapter 660 Free International Crossing

Yan Jiayu expressed her regrets with great emotion before hanging up the phone.

After a night of rest, Xu Huo set off for the southern border the next day, to meet with Zheng Liang’s friend and join a few people who were about to leave the country.

Since the gamification began, there have been few people wanting to leave because, compared to other countries, Country X is relatively peaceful, especially since the return tickets obtained at the end of each game session were generally issued for the players’ pre-game places of permanent residence. Unless one did not plan to return to Zone 014, expending effort to go to another country wasn’t very useful.

The sudden increase in the number of people in the past few days was entirely due to the incident at Special Defense Department Headquarters. Not only ordinary citizens but also players began to become xenophobic.

The ordinary people could still be controlled, but the players were truly unmanageable. Some minor conflicts often evolved into irreparable fights. Of course, players from Country X who lived abroad were also not having an easy time— at least before the headquarters incident, there wasn’t such strong hostility towards foreign players in Country X.

Under various circumstances, some people wanted to leave through the border, mostly foreigners.

When Xu Huo arrived with Li Chun, the other individuals also planning to leave were somewhat surprised but kept their distance without initiating conversation.

"Brother Sun is here," one of them said upon seeing someone emerge from the woods, and promptly waved to that person.

This location was close to the border, and patrols were common nearby. They all hid in the underbrush. The man called Brother Sun had arrived five minutes earlier and had repeatedly checked the surroundings before appearing and signaling everyone to crouch down.

After Brother Sun came over and crouched down himself, he used an item before starting to speak, "Is everyone here? Do you have the money?"

Several players immediately took out their White Notes. After Brother Sun verified their authenticity, he gave them a white card with a three-minute timer on the front. "Carry this card with you, and just go straight over. However, remember two points. First, don’t make any noise yourself, and second, it’s only effective for three minutes."

"Can this really guarantee a hundred percent success rate?" another, younger player asked, flipping the card over skeptically.

"If you don’t want to trade, we can cancel," Brother Sun said, reaching for the card. The young player hastily put it away, "I was just joking."

"This is my special ability called ’Free Cross-Border,’" Brother Sun added. "It can let you luck out and cross over within a certain timeframe. As long as you don’t do anything stupid, it’ll work. I’ve sent over a dozen people, not one has had trouble."

"Of course," the player who first greeted Brother Sun, a bald person clearly from Country X, said gratefully, rubbing his head, "If Special Defense Department got wind of this, this route wouldn’t still be open, would it?"

Brother Sun grunted, "Sure, you can get across, but what happens after that isn’t my business. If the people on the other side catch you, that’s your bad luck."

"You make money so easily," Li Chun typed a sentence on her hand. "You just hand out a card to each person. If that card is so useful, can you give me another one?"

Brother Sun was initially displeased, but when he saw the face of the Girl in the painting, his anger dissipated slightly, "The range of the special ability has a limit. I need to ensure you’ve crossed over before I can leave. Get it? I can’t leave during those three minutes, and I have to take a risk as well. Our country’s Special Defense Department is highly capable; after a shot is fired, we have to switch locations."

The Girl in the painting saw his refusal and pouted.

With weeds flourishing on the border line and the winds strong, it was hard to be spotted while crouching, but with only three minutes to get through, they had to run.

Six players, lined up, left. Xu Huo and the Girl in the painting were at the back. Before leaving, Brother Sun secretly gave the Girl in the painting a blue card and gestured for her to stay silent.

The blue card had a four-minute timer. The Girl in the painting smiled joyfully, blew him a kiss, and then chased after Xu Huo into the bushes.

As they all departed, the card started its countdown from three minutes.

Despite the security of the card, the players exerted all their skills—silencing their movements, speeding up, or concealing their forms—to ensure a safer passage.

The border fence had been reinforced and heightened since last time, with two additional barriers added. They were equipped with special sensing and monitoring systems, meaning even if they hid well, living people would still be detected from afar by the surveillance.

If an alarm was triggered, the border fence’s poison gas devices would activate automatically, and within ten seconds, Special Defense Department players would arrive.

In such a short time, to safely and correctly cross three fences wasn’t secure, and even if you made it through, the arriving Special Defense Department players could perform extraterritorial law enforcement—current international borders were not stable, with occasional conflicts. If it was just to capture players, everyone would turn a blind eye to avoid escalating the situation.

So even if you ran away, Special Defense Department players might still drag you back.

To get across, one had to scale the barriers without triggering alarms. Once across, whether the country on the other side would take action was no longer Country X’s concern.

Brother Sun’s card was meant to enable just that.

The group approached the first barrier and, confirming the alarm wasn’t set off, began to climb over.

The young player used a tool to dig a big hole under the fence. The process didn’t take three seconds; a quick jump down and climb up meant they could slip past the barrier unnoticed.

One by one, the six players went down, then crept through the bushes towards the second barrier. They stopped whenever a searchlight turned their way and only continued once the light had passed.

However, as they neared the second fence, Xu Huo noticed a mobile device moving atop the fence from a distance.

"That’s a mobile electronic eye, controlled by a player. Dig a hole!" Bald Head said hurriedly to the young player, "It’s less likely to be spotted underground!"

The young player quickly set to work. Once the hole was ready, the six of them jumped in, pulling grass over themselves from the sides to hide as they waited for the electronic eye to move on.

"Squeak, squeak..." The device emitted a faint sound as it came near, pausing nearby, which made everyone involuntarily tense up. But a few seconds later, it slid away.

"That was close..." Bald Head exhaled long and told the others, "Seems like we’re pretty lucky."

"Can we go now?" a burly man asked, looking at the card in his hand, "Not much time left."

"Wait a bit longer," the young player peered outside, "At this distance, we can still be spotted."

His caution was of little consequence as after a few seconds, the burly man led the way out, followed closely by another foreign player.

The young player helplessly spread his hands, "There’s a saying in Country X, ’Haste makes waste.’ It’s just ten more seconds."

"Shut up! Let’s go!"
