Chapter 650: Chapter 650: Have the Movie Characters Come to Life?
The building had been augmented with prop power, so the Special Defense Department prepared explosive devices, intending to blast a hole in the wall.
From preparation to wall detonation and the entry of the Special Defense Department players, those players hidden in the building remained silent, as if they had lost all contact.
The drones and surveillance robots that had been sent in ahead of time malfunctioned after only a short while, leaving the Special Defense Department blind, with no choice but to send in players to scout ahead.
Xu Huo changed into a set of the Special Defense Department’s gear and followed the scouting team into the building.
The building was devoid of people, and different types of music flowed out of the shops that had yet to close their doors; pop and electronic sounds mixed together in the spacious area to create an ever-deepening effect, as if emanating from a deep cavern.
"Everyone be careful of the props!" The team leader at the front raised his hand to signal for the team to stop, and fired two shots at a huge doll in front of them.
The bullets passed through the doll and struck the wall behind it, and only after confirming it wasn’t a prop did the leader gesture for the others to spread out toward the stairs.
But as they moved toward the staircase, the doll that was shot suddenly leaped up, clutching at the big hole in its belly and pouncing toward the players with a wiggle.
"Watch your step!" A player rushed forward and threw a gyro; the spinning gyro hit the ground and released several small, roped gyros, which spun around and tripped up the doll.
"Bang, bang, bang!" A spray of bullets riddled the doll with holes before it finally stopped struggling, but what was revealed inside was nothing but charred stuffing.
"Hee hee!" A sly rabbit peeked out and ran towards the stairs. It was knocked back by the stairway door but persistently charged again, smashing the door open and hopping up the stairs.
The eerie laughter echoed up the stairwell, and Special Defense Department players didn’t follow too closely, instead using a prop to mount a surveillance device to check the situation, but it malfunctioned as soon as it poked its head up, sending back nothing but blackness.
The leader stepped aside, and a player from behind came forward, placing a half-human-high robot on the steps, pushed the red button on top, and retreated.
"Boom! Boom!" The robot’s eyes opened, first shooting two lasers at the players, and after they dodged, it climbed the stairs, cursing and punching the whole way.
The player who was hoodwinked by his own prop now said, "For the next three minutes, it will attack any target that appears in front of it that is roughly my height."
The leader nodded and led the team on.
Odd as the prop was, its performance was notably efficient; by the time the Special Defense Department members reached the second floor, the escaped rabbit only had a big hole in its head.
A player went up and kicked the rabbit doll, which didn’t move.
Next, they had to clear the second floor.
More than half of the second floor was occupied by beverage and snack shops, many in number but small in storefronts, leaving virtually no place to hide; the other side was the entertainment area, which could be seen at a glance, but the movie theater at the back was not small.
"The control gate’s malfunctioning." The player who went to open the main gate came back to report to the leader, "The lights in the movie theater won’t turn on, but each theater has a switch."
"Be very careful, the enemy is likely hiding in there," the leader quickly assigned tasks.
Xu Huo followed other team members into one of the screening rooms, where an action movie was playing on the big screen. Suddenly the sound of intense gunfire erupted, and the leading two players were hit by bullets, crashing into seats. Before they could get up, the surrounding seats exploded one after another, bullets ricocheting off the metal frames, hitting other accompanying players.
"Spread out!" someone shouted, and cut through the big screen with a slash from midair!
The sight stunned the other players, who then hurriedly took cover behind the seats, as the assailant’s machine gun could actually kill!
The gunfire didn’t cease, filling the room with the smell of gunpowder; the "movie character" pushed back the players and still unsatisfied, leaped towards the front row of seats.
In between, two players returned fire, but their bullets passed through his body, hitting the screen behind him.
"This is visual misalignment," Xu Huo, possessing a visual misalignment prop, recognized unlike the other players clueless, "False things can’t cause real harm, so if you can hit others, it means you must be near the illusion, and you can’t be too far away."
He aimed at the fake machine gun, but the Crimson Sword would only strike the first target it encountered; he was lucky, finding the real body on his first try.
Forcefully slamming the figure against the screen, the "movie character’s" illusory effect seemingly overlapped with the real person, who then crashed into the wall with a thud and collapsed!
The person looked up at Xu Huo with a glare, and then with a wave of his hand, more movie characters emerged from half of the screen. The sound of fake guns and real bullets mixed together, making it impossible to discern where the real players were.
Xu Huo leaped down from the seat and swung his sword at the approaching "crowd." A faint sound of a bullet being fired came from a certain place. He stomped his foot and thrust towards the front left, and with a "clatter," the tip of the sword picked up a crocodile doll!
"You can’t catch me! You can’t catch me!" A fox appeared behind the crocodile, raising its paws high, excitedly running towards the exit.
"Trying to escape?!" the leader, near the door, smashed a potion onto the floor, and the oil-like liquid automatically spread across the aisle. The fox tripped headlong before it could get away, but the next second, it was no longer as clumsy as other dolls, kicking off the wall to dodge the leader’s bullets and sliding toward the door!
The Crimson Sword sliced through the fox doll from a distance, and the player hidden inside leaped out, disappearing from everyone’s sight.
The leader and a few team members hurriedly set off in pursuit, but as they reached the corridor, the lights suddenly dimmed, the flickering bulbs not only causing psychological strain but also impairing the players’ vision.
The Special Defense Department players blasted the lights with several shots and moved forward into total darkness.
