Chapter 643: The Artifact in the Alien’s Belly
Chapter 643: Chapter 643: The Artifact in the Alien’s Belly
The sound of "clack clack" was incessant. Code B, retreating while tossing his carried explosives outward, had expected a roaring explosion. However, what he saw was the miniature bombs, hand grenades, and bullets he threw out, all floating in mid-air as if they had lost gravity.
"Point Swap!"
"Intermittent Blindness!"
"Suffocation-level Invisibility!"
"..."
After trying multiple gadgets and abilities with no success, Code B’s face finally showed panic. He ran blindly ahead, missed a step, and plummeted into the undying darkness!
"Aaahhh!"
On the other side, Zeng Tai leaned against a tree and glanced at Code B, who had been still since the beginning. He covered his wound with his clothes and then looked at the man standing beside B, asking loudly, "Are you Xu Huo?"
Xu Huo finished off Code B with a sword and, upon picking up his belongings, was slightly disappointed to find no Black Rain gadget. He picked up the flash device that had fallen on the ground; it was a high-frequency device.
If he hadn’t seen it wrong, the player had intended to place the device into the water. Could it be that there was something else hidden beneath the depression besides gadgets?
Just as he was about to summon the Girl in the Painting to ask, the person leaning against the tree spoke again, "Hey! I’m asking if you are Xu Huo!"
Xu Huo turned his head and glanced at the few silently approaching kittens, and with a movement of his hand, he sprinkled a small bottle of "Mesmerizing Good Stuff". The alley cats that had come close and refused to leave immediately retched earnestly, arching their backs, and then fled in fright.
Since Zeng Tai’s protective suit was torn, he naturally smelled the scent and, with his keen sense of smell, was immediately brought to tears and mucus, leaning against the tree and vomiting. While vomiting, he still found time to point at Xu Huo, "Don’t... be... arrogant... My companion will be here soon!"
The scene was too painful to watch, and Xu Huo chose to look away.
Just then, Wang Chaoqing and several players from the Special Defense Department arrived. The former recognized Xu Huo by the sword in his hand and immediately called out with joy, "Brother Xu!"
"He’s Xu Huo? He doesn’t look like his picture!" another player muttered.
"How can one wander the world without a couple of false faces!" Wang Chaoqing came over with a smile to greet him, but before he could finish speaking, a "gurgle" of bubbles emerged from the depression.
Everyone on the scene paused, then saw the second and third bubble, realizing that something underwater was attacking the shore at a very fast speed. Xu Huo kicked Wang Chaoqing out of the way and simultaneously swung his Sword in a slash!
"Shhh!" A creature, neither human nor human-like and covered in mud, was cut in half. After falling, it didn’t immediately die; instead, its upper body wriggled, making strange guttural sounds, struggling towards Xu Huo.
Stepping on its head, Xu Huo pinned it down with his Sword before seeing clearly that it was an Alien displaying signs of fish mutation; it had three gill-like slits on either side of its neck, flapping open and closed out of the water.
"Is this a mermaid?" Wang Chao, who had been kicked, walked over rubbing his belly.
Zeng Tai couldn’t hide his terror, "Could it be that everyone soaked by the Black Rain will turn into this in the end?"
Xu Huo kicked the Alien away and turned towards the depression, saying, "Here comes another!"
"Bang!"
"Bang!"
"Bang!"
This time, more than one alien emerged, and although they had grown gills, their speed was not slow at all, they almost instantly neared the shore with a blink of an eye.
"We can’t let them get away!" Xu Huo shouted loudly, "The ’Black Rain’ gadget might be inside their bellies!"
Wang Chaoqing and the others were astonished and, without time for questions, they each brandished their artifacts to kill the aliens, while the helicopters above provided support with gunfire.
In the hollow, water splashed everywhere, but only a couple were killed, instead, several members of the Special Defense Department were severely injured—these aliens were clearly more vicious than those in the city!
However, this intense skirmish didn’t last long. At a certain moment, the frenzied aliens suddenly stopped, all at once turned their heads toward a direction, then abandoned their current prey and ran wildly in that direction!
"That’s the direction of headquarters! They’re heading into the city!" Zeng Tai’s face changed drastically as he pursued them, disregarding his injuries.
The Special Defense Department players and the helicopters quickly shifted targets, Xu Huo didn’t rush to move but instead called out to the Girl in the Painting in the hollow.
After a while, the Girl in the Painting slowly emerged from underwater, dragging a corpse that had been torn open, with a head covered in seaweed.
"Does it have an artifact on it?" Xu Huo understood at a glance. The players from Country Y had hidden these aliens in the hollow beforehand. Of course, the aliens wouldn’t just comply obediently, and getting so many of them past the Special Defense Department discreetly wouldn’t have been easy. So, it was highly likely these people had arrived here before completely turning into aliens.
The player from before had used a high-frequency device in an attempt to awaken the aliens, but Xu Huo had intercepted it halfway. Now, the reason for their awakening must be due to the Girl in the Painting.
The Girl in the Painting produced a block the size of a Magic Cube from behind and handed it to him, then pointed to the belly of the corpse, indicating that it was taken out from within.
Taking it over, Xu Huo saw something that looked more like an electronic device; a cloud symbol with heavy rain was displayed on its screen, with the raindrops continuously flashing.
As long as the owner of the artifact hadn’t died, the artifact couldn’t be added to the artifact inventory. He tried placing the artifact in the luggage compartment, but that didn’t succeed either.
"Do you recognize this artifact?" he asked the Girl in the Painting, who shook her head. She then reached out to catch the rain, indicating that the rain was getting smaller.
Xu Huo also noticed that as soon as the artifact left the hollow, the rain diminished, and the water droplets flowing up from within the hollow decreased rapidly, but the rain was still black.
He handed the artifact back to the Girl in the Painting and instructed her to take it back down into the hollow.
Theoretically, the safest way to carry an artifact is on a player’s person, as Tickets can protect the player’s safety to the greatest extent. However, those players had placed the artifact inside the belly of an alien.
This revealed two issues: first, to be effective, this high-level artifact likely needed to be near a large, open-air water source; second, even if their identities were exposed, they weren’t able to retrieve the artifact.
The latter had multiple possibilities. Perhaps there were operational limits on the artifact making it unretrievable under certain conditions, but this seemed less likely. Alternatively, the player holding this high-level artifact wasn’t here.
The other players had gone to Wen Mountain; it was the players left here to wake the aliens who were not the artifact’s holders. In Xu Huo’s view, it would be logical for the artifact holder to guard the hollow, even hiding below it, so why hadn’t they done so but instead chose to have the aliens carry the artifact?
The first thing Xu Huo thought of were the operational limits of the artifact, but these couldn’t be so stringent that even the holder couldn’t approach it. The aliens had been drawn away soon after awakening, a signal surely arranged in advance. It was part of the plan for the aliens to awaken and head to Jing City. Now, headquarters was in chaos, overrun with aliens; it wouldn’t be strange for the artifact holder to be mixed in with them. However, having the aliens carry the artifact was an incomplete method, puzzling him.
