Chapter 633: Chapter 633: Fall of the Special Defense Department
But it didn’t end there—the aliens outside were more numerous than they had imagined, nearly endless streams of them. The aliens jumped in through the windows of the room, continuously charging into the living room and even fighting among themselves due to their excessive numbers!
Zheng Liang and the others didn’t have any major defense props, so they had to move sofas and tables to block the entrance, creating some distance for their props to be effective.
But they underestimated the aliens’ capabilities. If they could shatter the glass of the dimension train, then wooden furniture was nothing to them. The sofas and tables were pushed aside, and the exotic species crowded in, menacingly advancing toward them. Single-target defense props were not enough to turn the tide; at this point, their only option was to fight!
Zheng Liang and his companions swung their weapons to combat the aliens, but their ability to maneuver in the increasingly cramped space was limited.
"We have to get out of here!" Wen Xuelin shouted. She was covered in so much black fluid that her face and clothes were filthy, "We haven’t been poisoned yet; the antidote might keep us safe until we find shelter!"
The other three agreed with the suggestion and called out to Xu Huo for his opinion.
Xu Huo signaled them to take the stairs, "There aren’t many players outside, taking the stairs is relatively safe."
They retreated to the door and after exiting, Xu Huo used it to maintain a distance. With a sweep of his hand on the ground and two cuts with his sword, he closed the door.
The building was overrun inside. He removed the steel reinforcement from the floors and cut through the walls. As the aliens scrambled up and down, the building’s floors couldn’t withstand the force, and within seconds of the door closing, there were sounds of collapse from inside.
Xu Huo and Zheng Liang didn’t stop. Even falling to the next level wouldn’t be fatal for the aliens.
As they descended the stairs, aliens constantly entered from the windows, though in smaller numbers.
"It’s a good thing the people near the headquarters evacuated early, or this place would be absolute hell!" Brother Liang said grimly.
The others wore troubled expressions. The clearance of personnel near the headquarters was accidental, but with the rain affecting such a wide area, what would become of other places?
The mutation of Special Defense Department players could even be set aside for now. How many of the department’s operatives were out there? And most of them were in protective suits, covering their eyes, ears, mouth, and nose securely. But what about ordinary people?
How many people are on one-third of a city’s land? Not to mention that the rain also directly affected the water supply!
"Special Defense Department emergency notification: all city residents are urged not to come into contact with tap water in any form. Drinking, cooking, washing can all cause infection! Do not use water! Do not use water! Do not use water!"
"Some residents and stray animals that have been infected have exhibited violent behavior. Please close all doors and windows and do not go outside! Close the doors and windows, do not go outside!"
The emergency communications sounded throughout the city, and Xu Huo and his group heard it as well, though it was intermittent in the heavy rain, as if muffled by the rain curtain.
Huddled in a residential security room, they could see the shifting shadows in the rain through the monitor—unnaturally positioned figures that could be recognized at a glance as people who had mutated.
"There are a lot of players near the headquarters," Brother Liang said, "It looks like the Special Defense Department is also in trouble."
"In less than ten minutes since we came down, thirteen exotic species have appeared on the monitor—all Special Defense Department players. With so many members mutating at once, the Department is certainly in chaos," Xu Huo said gravely. "Once the Department is in chaos, ordinary players have almost no chance of breaking out."
"The Special Defense Department and the military have sealed off the headquarters area and organized a large-scale evacuation, but not everyone has left the rain zone. The earliest outbreak of alien attacks must be right in the midst of the evacuating troops. By now, even the army responsible for maintaining order might have fallen. The aliens will soon be surging back from the containment lines."
In other words, until the Special Defense Department and the military could organize a new team to suppress the aliens, staying put was the safest option.
"These aliens have sharp hearing, so we can’t move for now," Zheng Liang said. "We’ll just have to hide here for the time being."
"What’s the world going to become?" Wen Xuelin asked uncertainly, addressing everyone.
No one could answer her question, and if the players were this clueless, regular people who were almost helpless against the aliens and black rain were even worse off.
The entire city began to panic.
The most direct consequence of the panic was that people from areas without rain frantically evacuated, causing a total collapse of urban transportation. This significantly slowed down the army’s rescue efforts en route to Special Defense Department Headquarters as they had to clear the way with armored vehicles.
There was also minor looting of food and water, which was quickly subdued.
Some people with ulterior motives incited unrest as well, but that did not escalate either.
Of course, those weren’t the most pressing issues. The collapse of the Special Defense Department was the real problem—losing control over the players and instead being consumed with containing the player mutations.
Minister Fan’s phone was flooded with calls, but he was powerless to help with the current situation. Everyone who could be sent out was already deployed, and rescue teams would sometimes be taken by surprise by a mutating player, leaving people unprepared. Not only was rescuing and controlling mutating players an issue, but it also caused a crisis of trust among the Special Defense Department members.
The temporary command center was now surrounded by aliens as well, trapping him and several directors inside. With the sounds of battle roaring outside, they were terror-stricken, overwhelmed by commands from above that instructed them to keep mutating players within the containment zone at all costs, even at the sacrifice of the entire headquarters.
"They’re asking us to buy time with the lives of Special Defense Department members," Minister Fan said through gritted teeth, the veins on his forehead bulging. However, he was powerless to change the situation. Just when it seemed everything would be wrapped up for the night, unexpected complications arose.
"It’s tough that we’ll lose half of the personnel we’ve worked so hard to train," Director Lü lamented with a deep sigh.
"Half would be a blessing," Director Chang said in a low voice.
Just then, a phone on the table rang. Minister Fan hit the speaker button, "Go ahead."
"We just administered the Antidote Fungus to a mutating player, and he’s returned to normal. The research institute is now extracting the effective components from his blood," Jiang Qiao brought some good news. "But it will take some time."
"We can afford time, what we’re most afraid of is not having the antitoxin," Minister Fan said. "Tell the research institute to spare no effort!"
"Yes!" Jiang Qiao had just hung up when Nie Xuan called with another update, "David Pierce has shown signs of mental instability, but he’s given us important information. Country Y has a high-level prop related to the rain, and there were rumors within their ranks that this prop is currently in the city."
