Chapter 206: Chapter 206: The Bloodthirsty Little Red Flower
Although his hands and face were squashed together under heavy pressure, and his head and legs were welded in place, unable to move, fortunately, the mucus that wrapped around him wasn’t as sticky as spider silk. It was more like a hard gel, forming a shell on the outside.
He spat out the fragments of the ax and, using his fingertips, gently rubbed against the shell, quickly creating a small space for his wrist to move.
Once his wrist could move slightly, he took out a prop dagger and chiseled open a slit.
When the force dragging him pulled him out of the ventilation duct and tossed him upwards, Xu Huo had already broken through the cocoon. He grabbed onto the shell, which hadn’t completely fallen off, and slid toward the ground.
He, along with the shell beside him, traced an arc in midair and plummeted downward, finally stopping a meter or two above the ground.
After cutting open the mucus shell that wrapped around his legs, Xu Huo jumped to the ground, turned back to see the remaining half of the cocoon being flung upward, swinging back and forth in midair, before realizing what had ensnared him was a giant plant leaf.
It was about ten meters above the ground, arcing through the air, with cocoon shells hanging from its tips; the top of the cocoon was connected to the center of the leaf by a stalk, which connected to the main body of the giant plant through a white vein.
Walking out from the shadow of the leafy canopy on the weed-ridden ground, Xu Huo saw from the side that the center of this gigantic plant was a massive flowerpot, resembling the Man-Eating Flower seen in the elevator shaft, but ten times bigger.
In the center of the flowerpot, several enormous flesh-colored corollas opened, surrounded by green leaves, and those drooping leaves were unevenly hung with white cocoons. Some cocoons were empty, but inside others, one could see human bones, and even some people with flesh half-melted.
Inside, he saw those people who had disappeared from the elevator.
All of them were dead.
"Shhh-shhh!" A faint sound came from nearby. Xu Huo hurried over and discovered that it originated from a person-shaped cocoon with an acid-eaten hole underneath. Dai Wenqian was inside, eyes open, his right hand bloody, and still clutching a glass bottle.
The man was still alive.
Xu Huo used Sword to break open the outer cocoon, and as the bent branches elevated, Dai Wenqian slid out. Once he landed, he took deep breaths, thanked Xu Huo with a nod, lacking the strength to speak.
The two of them exchanged no further words and went on to find others.
They firstly found Zheng Liang and Jiang Yihua nearby and rescued them. After that, the four split up in pairs to look in different directions for more people.
But the Man-Eating Flower was simply too large, with hundreds of cocoon-like cases hanging on its many leaves. With the visibility being so poor, the speed of searching was slow; by the time they found most people, six had already died, suffocated, including one player.
Looking at the bodies laid on the ground, Zheng Liang gritted his teeth and said, "Burn this damn thing down!"
"With what?" Jiang Yihua whispered, "You’ve seen the size of this Man-Eating Flower; without supplemental material, it’s impossible to burn completely."
"Besides, it’s currently dormant. If we wake it up, we’re all in danger."
Zheng Liang looked at Xu Huo, "Can’t you start fires?"
"Not everything can be burned with fire," Xu Huo said, surveying the surroundings. Suddenly, not far away, he saw a bit of powder with a golden sheen.
This is the poison powder that appeared on the thirteenth floor," Wei Bin commented as he walked over with Xu Huo. Using the faint daylight, they saw the golden powder and, following its trail back, exclaimed in surprise, "This is the root of the Man-Eating Flower."
Zheng Liang took out Little Knife wanting to scrape off a bit, but Xu Huo stopped him, "Don’t touch it recklessly, these roots might be alive."
Zheng Liang stepped back and asked, "The little Man-Eating Flowers in the elevator shaft don’t seem to have poison powder, so how did the poison powder appear on the thirteenth floor?"
"Ventilation ducts," Dai Wenqian said. "Xiaohua Honghong Building has been abandoned for five years, and this giant Man-Eating Flower is housed in a semi-enclosed huge glass greenhouse. It’s not surprising that the roots and stems entered the building through the ventilation ducts due to neglect."
"From the fifteenth floor to the ninth, only the thirteenth floor has special ventilation equipment, the other floors do not."
"That’s why the poison powder appeared on the thirteenth floor," Jiang Yihua realized. "But I don’t understand, does this Man-Eating Flower have intelligence? How does it judge whether there are many or few people in the elevator?"
"Electronic sensors," Xu Huo said. "There should be sensors in both the floors and the elevator to determine the number of people. As long as someone goes up to the fifteenth floor, the people in the elevator will naturally become nourishment for the Man-Eating Flower in the ducts."
"If that’s the case, couldn’t we just destroy the electronic devices?" Zheng Liang said. "We’re now out of the elevator game, we should be safe."
They were out of the elevator game, but that didn’t necessarily mean they were safe.
Xu Huo looked at the glass room walls, which were already covered with a dense mass of roots and stems from various plants, and knew that the poison powder on the thirteenth floor came from the giant Man-Eating Flower.
But there were no signs of poison powder dispersal near the roots and stems they had just discovered, so it was very likely that the Man-Eating Flower didn’t actively spray poison powder.
If that was the case, getting rid of that trouble would make the thirteenth floor safer compared to the others.
"I have an idea," Jiang Yihua said. "If the Man-Eating Flower tries to grab someone from the elevator again, we could just go and save them. That way, no one would have to die."
The players were all silent.
A few seconds later, Jiang Yihua continued, "Is what I said wrong? Isn’t this place safer than inside the building?"
She had just finished speaking when the trembling rich young lady suddenly said with a sob, "It seems like we’ve lost one person..."
Xu Huo and the others quickly turned to count heads and indeed, one person was missing.
"How could someone disappear without us noticing at all!" Zheng Liang was shocked. "Even if there was an attack, there should have been some noise... How did you find out?"
He was addressing the rich young lady.
Choking back sobs, the young lady said, "That woman was holding onto my clothes just now. I just felt my clothes being tugged, and when I turned around I didn’t see her anymore."
The players became more cautious, and Xu Huo said, "Let’s head back inside the building first."
Although the glass greenhouse was large, the view was mostly blocked by dense plants. However, finding their way was not difficult. After Xu Huo went up and then down, the group headed back toward the elevator building.
Seven players split into two groups, with the rich young lady and the middle-aged woman among the four in the middle.
But despite their utmost caution, someone still disappeared, and it happened right next to Xu Huo.
He, one of the two players Gu Yu had called over, and Dai Wenqian’s companion were bringing up the rear. They had heard the footsteps of the other two just seconds before. However, in the moment Xu Huo took his eyes off them, the player Gu Yu had called over had vanished into thin air!
