Chapter 1443: Chapter 1444: Laden with Spoils
This is the crucial part.
Xu Huo smiled and said, "Earlier, I accidentally entered a study and saw a very beautiful pink feather pen on the desk."
"In my hometown, there’s an old saying that a pen is the medium of knowledge. I hope to use that pen to bring knowledge back to my homeland." f(r)eew(e)bnovel.(c)o(m)
The King and Queen looked at him with love in their eyes; the former readily agreed to his request, while the latter offered to give him some of her book collection, saying, "It’s not easy for someone so young to leave home to make a living. I sincerely wish that you and the citizens of Jewel City will always live in happiness."
Xu Huo nodded slightly and stepped aside. The Queen beckoned Yan Jiayu over, held her hand, and said, "The young lady’s performance was also splendid. We can’t favor one over the other, so you too can choose a treasure."
Yan Jiayu thought for a moment in distress, "But I don’t know what treasures are in the castle. What should I do?"
The Queen smiled kindly and reached out to touch her slightly dry hair, "I’ll give you a veil, then. May you remain beautiful."
Xiao Si soon came with a gorgeous, gem-studded veil, which the Queen personally draped over Yan Jiayu’s head, "This looks much better."
Yan Jiayu touched the gemstones on the edges, her eyes curved into crescents, "Thank you, Your Highness."
However, the performance wasn’t over yet. The Duke stepped forward and said, "Didn’t you say there were three magic acts earlier? There’s one more you haven’t performed."
Xu Huo bowed to the King, "The third magic act is mind reading. I can read what’s been on the King’s mind all along."
"Do we even need to guess?" the Duke said, "Who in Jewel City doesn’t know the reason for the King’s illness?"
But Xu Huo smiled confidently, "What I read is that the King’s deepest concern is not the thieves who haven’t yet been captured."
"Oh?" the King responded curiously, "Then tell us."
"What troubles you the most is actually a gemstone, a gemstone different from all others in Jewel City, the Most Beautiful Gemstone!"
After the answer was revealed, the people present weren’t too surprised. Since the Most Beautiful Gemstone had been loaned out for several months, it was natural for the King to be concerned. However, everyone still believed that the theft of the gemstone, which led to the King’s illness, was his primary concern.
"If I read incorrectly, please take it as a joke and laugh it off. If I read correctly, please grant me a public office. I can go to Moon City on behalf of Jewel City to retrieve the Most Beautiful Gemstone that was loaned out," Xu Huo declared firmly.
This is indeed a "difficult" task. After all, the King had already sent many people to retrieve it to no avail. Sometimes, Moon City would even block Jewel City’s people outside its gates, showing no intent to return the gemstone.
The King wore a slightly serious expression, "Can you really get the gemstone back?"
"Please trust me," Xu Huo reassured again.
"Very well," the King agreed after a moment of hesitation, "I will sign a letter granting you temporary office. When you go to Moon City, even if you can’t retrieve the gemstone, the people there will not trouble you."
Xu Huo nodded slightly in thanks once more.
Tonight’s performance came to a perfect conclusion. Since it was still early, they packed up their things and prepared to leave the castle.
While a maid was clearing the performance props Yan Jiayu had placed, Xu Huo entered the King’s study from the lounge, turned to the last few pages of the Code of Laws, and wrote on a blank page with the pink Codex Pen:
"Permit temporary public office personnel to enter the castle and Rose Garden."
After the ink dried, he closed the Code of Laws and returned to the lounge.
The Guards packed their tools very quickly, but the books the Queen gifted were quite a lot—she truly intended to give them, filling up two whole carts.
Beside the ubiquitous storybooks and picture books, there were others on planting, animal husbandry, handicrafts, and cooking, covering a wide range and showing her careful selection.
Xu Huo asked the Guards to convey his gratitude to the Queen and King, before he and Yan Jiayu left the castle with their abundant gain.
Outside the castle, many players were waiting to catch them off guard. When they came out, most moved into the open, while only a few remained hidden—though robbery was illegal, robbing players allowed for a quick getaway.
Duan Cheng and Li Kun quickly joined Xu Huo and Yan Jiayu. Though four people were not many compared to the gathered players, especially as many players, through props, had learned of the events in the banquet hall and wouldn’t easily let go.
Li Kun and Duan Cheng were on guard and advised Xu Huo to leave quickly.
"No need to worry," Xu Huo said, "We are not far from the castle; the area is full of residents. If anyone tries to rob the gifts from the King and Queen, the people of Jewel City will certainly stand united."
The people of Jewel City were troublesome; they might not be able to kill players, but they could distract them, giving Xu Huo and his group a chance to escape.
"A third of the instance time has passed, and those still hoping to clear it won’t want to become criminals now." Xu Huo paused before adding, "Except for fools."
Seeing that this approach might be costly, a player stepped forward voluntarily, "Why not share your joy with the group instead of enjoying it alone? You brought out so many things, keeping it all for yourself seems a bit stingy. Why not share it with everyone? Those who see it should get a share!"
"Do you really have the gall to say such shameless things?" Yan Jiayu looked at him with shock.
The man snorted coldly, "Whether you share or not, say a word, then we can talk further."
His attitude was tough, as if they would swarm over if they resisted, Xu Huo glanced around and then threw a black cloth over the cart. Receiving the cue, Yan Jiayu slapped the cart, and all the packaged books went into her luggage compartment.
Clapping her hands, she looked with a bit of smugness at the person who had spoken earlier, "Have the guts to try and rob!"
"Not appreciating favors." More players began subtly closing in, tension rising as if a fight were inevitable, but unexpectedly, Yan Jiayu suddenly turned and shouted towards the castle, "Sister Xiao Si, someone wants to rob the books the Queen gave us!"
Prop person Xiao Si instantly appeared on the wall.
Her appearance caused all the players present to pause. The news that the instance holder was a player had spread, and seeing a humanoid prop wasn’t surprising. Humanoid props were often high-level items and, if capable of acting like real people, would definitely be Super Props... the one in front of them might not be a Super Prop, but its strength was undoubtedly high.
"A player was hanged at the gate this afternoon."
