Chapter 1267: Chapter 1268: The Half-Hearted Interview

"I don’t need it for now. Why don’t you leave me your contact information? I’ll get in touch with you later." After Xu Huo finished speaking, he gave the other person a steady look. The player, knowing when to retreat, left his contact details and emphasized to definitely get in touch before swiftly leaving.

Xu Huo casually tossed the business card into the trash can.

Half an hour later, he also left the library and headed to the underground station, preparing to go to the Game Government Base.

The underground station was similarly filled with the fragrance of flowers. Because the air circulation wasn’t as good as above ground, despite the ventilation system being constantly on, the scent was still overwhelmingly strong.

Xu Huo caught a whiff of something rotten and turned his head to look at the woman standing next to him.

She was a woman with exquisite makeup, holding a moving cradle by her side. As she adjusted the child’s outerwear, she bashfully said, "The child’s been having some stomach issues for the past couple of days, probably had an accident again, there’s some smell."

As she spoke, she sprayed some perfume around the cradle, causing the cleaning robot that was initially moving closer to change direction.

"Am I bothering you?" The woman noticed Xu Huo looking at her and apologized.

"No." Xu Huo’s gaze lingered momentarily on the cradle before shifting away, "The air in the underground station isn’t great, small kids can easily feel suffocated."

The woman showed an unusually calm smile, "My child won’t feel suffocated."

The hover vehicle arrived, and once the door opened, the woman carried the cradle inside. As she turned around, she smiled and nodded at Xu Huo.

The vehicle doors closed, and the vehicle departed. Ten seconds later, the sound of shooting and glass shattering came from the direction of the tracks. Three seconds later, alarms blared inside the station, with robots announcing that a violent incident had occurred and requesting everyone to temporarily leave the station. If needed, they could catch a ride from another station three hundred meters away, or wait for the next vehicle, which would arrive in five minutes.

Some people ran, while a few stayed behind, saying, "Why bother? Robots can resolve it in three minutes at most, the vehicle will be here soon..."

However, someone complained, "How did the robot scan? Didn’t even catch a gun!"

"Robots aren’t omnipotent; how can they prevent everything?"

"I heard Flower City is about to introduce emotion detectors, said to judge whether a person has a criminal impulse based on emotions, and as soon as there’s an issue detected, the robot can promptly arrest them."

"That would be great, otherwise I’d really be shot dead out of nowhere..."

Some robots entered the tunnel and didn’t come out; they probably exited from other entry points. Just as some said, the next vehicle indeed arrived in less than three minutes.

Xu Huo boarded the vehicle following the others and heard someone continuing the previous conversation. A man with a drunken face said, "Doesn’t that mean we can’t even think? Say, when those machines are in place, wouldn’t meeting those ladies mean getting shot on the spot?"

Many understood, and sparse laughter emerged, with some agreeing, "Would there be any freedom to even think? How could we live?"

"By then, there’ll surely be ways to discern emotions, thinking bad thoughts won’t matter, haha!"

The conversation veered elsewhere as the vehicle reached its destination.

Upon emerging from underground, directly opposite was the Game Government Base. The square in front of the base was isolated by a transparent barrier, which displayed a projection interface upon approach, asking him to show identification or leave.

Xu Huo took out the interview notice slip.

After clearing the instance at W37 Base Station, he was granted the interview eligibility for a position at the General Government Office, and this is where the interview would be held.

"Please wait a moment," the system prompted, responding after a few seconds, "Today’s interview slots are full, please come back tomorrow."

Xu Huo was about to leave with the notice slip, but then the system changed its stance: "Identity verification successful, please proceed to the interview."

Simultaneously, the barrier opened.

Xu Huo hesitated for a second at the entrance before entering. A few meters ahead, a mobility device came to welcome him. He stepped onto it, and the previously hovering machine quickly skated along the ground, taking him via elevator up to the eighteenth floor, where it prompted him to step off.

Outside the elevator was a spacious room, with only three tables and a robot under a giant glass window. Surprisingly, it was an in-person interview.

Two middle-aged individuals in uniforms occupied the left and right, with what seemed to be a young man in the middle. His legs were crossed atop the table, torso leaning back in the chair, with a magazine over his face, barely revealing his chin.

The woman on the left signaled Xu Huo to hand the notice slip to the robot.

After the robot checked it, the interview formally began.

The two clearly had access to Xu Huo’s relevant information. The middle-aged man was the first to ask, "Do you still hold the ’Bright Gentleman’ Medal?"

Xu Huo gave an affirmative answer, though the other did not ask him to display it.

Then, the middle-aged woman asked, "What would prompt you to save a stranger without any ties?"

"Compassion." Xu Huo replied, "As long as I happen to feel compassionate towards them."

During the questions and answers, neither displayed any excessive expressions or actions as if going through a routine. They didn’t care about his answers.

Of course, Xu Huo similarly didn’t particularly care about his own responses, instead asking, "If I don’t succeed in getting the job, can I take a tour of the base?"

They seemed slightly surprised but didn’t perceive any threat. The middle-aged woman said, "No unauthorized non-staff personnel can enter the base."

"I understand." Xu Huo nodded and asked, "Is the interview over? Can I leave now?"

The middle-aged man gestured with a "please" motion.

This bore an uninteresting interview thus concluded, and the places Xu Huo passed were almost devoid of anything besides mobile robots.

Zone 011 rarely uses paper documents, let alone District 001. It’s no surprise not seeing any large items, as work likely requires using a separate game system. However, the technologically advanced building resolutely adhered to minimalism, with almost no decorations or ornaments, not to mention patterns akin to the Diamond Key.

However, as he was leaving, a flying machine happened to move out from the second floor. The fully transparent cabin allowed a view of those inside, presumably the man from the interview who sat with the book over his face.

As Xu Huo looked up, he met the man’s blue eyes. In that instant, the eyes were magnified infinitely, towering over him with an absolute superiority, while the air around him seemed to stagnate.

This feeling passed in a flash, as those blue eyes exuded extreme indifference, as if someone distractedly glanced at an ant by the roadside, devoid of any meaning.

Xu Huo decided to get something to eat after watching the flying machine disappear towards the city center.
