Chapter 1228: Chapter 1229: The Fruits of Evolution
After attempting several times in succession, Xu Huo found himself surrounded by fragments of various objects at his feet. The easiest to destroy was ordinary paper, which could be torn into tiny millimeter-sized scraps. Other objects, like branches and common furniture, could only be broken down to roughly the size of a fingernail.
Moreover, there were limitations in size and material, so he couldn’t destroy objects at will. However, he made some progress: his control range with the Spatial Ray expanded to about five hundred meters. Within this range, besides being able to move freely, the area he could control meticulously also increased, though still affected by obstacles, albeit to a lesser extent than before.
Previously, he could sense if there were people behind a wall and their movements, but he couldn’t know their minute actions as he would in an unimpeded space.
Now, he was somewhat more sensitive. He tested with props, and under similar obstructions like walls, a single layer did not significantly affect Spatial Power anymore; at least two or three layers of barriers were needed to blur his perception.
Of course, it still wasn’t as convenient as using Cubic Space, where within its coverage, any tiny change in the air was as if seen directly, with even lesser impact from obstacles.
Likewise, he could remotely control objects like Bai Kou, but his force was not as strong, and there were weight limitations.
From the current situation, he identified two improvements from his second Super Evolution of space: one was remotely controlling objects via the Spatial Ray, and the other was using it to destroy objects by disrupting the rays within them.
These two directions differed from Xue Lang’s capabilities. Although the Spatial Blade created with the Spatial Ray also possessed destructive power, it didn’t quite match the direct effect of the rays. Xu Huo tried to use the rays in similar modes but could only move objects with them at most, not inflict damage on them, let alone with a single ray.
The blades made through Spatial Rays were actually produced by changing the ray density within the same area for qualitative effect, which doesn’t inherently mean the rays had destructive power—from this perspective, Xue Lang’s Super Evolution was quite powerful.
The maze suddenly emitted a dull sound. Xu Huo turned back to see the damaged maze walls moving. The broken and collapsed plants were entirely cleared away, while new plant walls closed in along the changing maze walls, gradually replacing the original ones, altering the maze paths.
Without lingering much, Xu Huo swiftly left by moving through the space.
Each step allowed him to leap nearly five hundred meters, and he quickly traversed over ten passages to find his previous resting spot.
Mu Yan had already woken up. Seeing no one around, she waited for a while before changing her hiding place. This time she was more cautious, setting surveillance devices at two turns in the passage to provide pre-warnings.
Despite the passage being shrouded in thick fog, the special item could still capture silhouettes, and it was in this manner that she first detected Xu Huo.
Of course, the image feedback from the devices merely showed a silhouette. Seeing the figure stride across two passages in what seemed like two steps, she stood up in astonishment!
Each passage was at least a hundred meters long. Even using a prop or characteristic required transition time, at least a pause when using an item, but this person appeared to skip the entire journey, as if in a horror film!
Mu Yan didn’t have much time to think and immediately prepared to flee. As she turned around, an icy hand rested on her shoulder, causing her to shiver uncontrollably.
"Are you okay?" Xu Huo asked.
Mu Yan exhaled sharply in relief and turned back gratefully, "It’s you. I thought this maze was genuinely haunted!"
Xu Huo looked around, "This atmosphere certainly suits a ghost movie."
"No," Mu Yan pointed to the direction just now, "did you come from that way?"
Upon receiving a confirmation, she continued, "I set up props there and happened to see you, but couldn’t make out your face clearly."
Xu Huo roughly understood and smiled slightly without saying anything.
"When I opened my eyes, you and Xue Lang were gone," Mu Yan said, "There was quite a commotion in the maze just moments ago..."
"Xue Lang is the player who’s been trailing me, but he’s already left." Xu Huo stretched his arms and neck, "Some players might be drawn over by the noise; let’s go first."
Seeing that Xu Huo was only slightly injured, Mu Yan guessed Xue Lang hadn’t gained any advantage either, so she packed her items and followed him.
The forced demolition of the maze walls indeed attracted many players’ attention. Several times, the two saw silhouettes dashing past at intersections, all heading in the direction from which they came.
The maze was quite restless that night, with its passages frequently shifting, not in small ranges. Whether due to Xu Huo and Xue Lang’s earlier fight or the instance’s inherent setup was unclear.
"The passages changed," Mu Yan observed the maze walls, "The plants along several of the paths we traveled earlier haven’t been replaced recently. If we haven’t gone in the wrong direction, then the entire maze layout has altered."
This wasn’t a good sign.
"Our direction is fine," Xu Huo replied, "As long as the maze’s endpoint remains unchanged, the rest is minor."
Seeing his calm demeanor, Mu Yan’s tense expression relaxed slightly.
Xu Huo led the way, not deliberately speeding up, and kept triggering the maze walls flanking the passages. Although he didn’t acquire any useful cards, the omnipresent traps and misleading information proved the route was correct.
Not until dawn broke and the fog dissipated did they stop to rest.
Exhausted from staying up all night and the energy spent during Evolution, Xu Huo entered the sanctuary to sleep, instructing Mu Yan to wake him if necessary.
Thanks to Xue Lang’s antics, Mu Yan slept well the previous night. Hence, she stood guard at the entrance, taking the opportunity to organize her props, when three players entered the passage a while later.
Subtly hiding her tension, Mu Yan gave them a cursory glance, lowered her head, and continued with her tasks.
The three merely glanced at her before leaving peacefully.
The closer they got to the endpoint, the more players they encountered, which was normal. Since nothing happened, Mu Yan did not wake Xu Huo.
However, twenty minutes later, another group entered the passage, but from a different direction than the previous three.
This group, like the ones before, showed no interest in Mu Yan by the wayside and hurried through the passage.
After they left, Mu Yan had just begun to put away her props when the maze wall opposite suddenly opened, forming a new passage.
