Chapter 1207: Chapter 1207: Obtaining a Clue
Xu Huo smiled at her, "No problem."
He Xiaoxiao walked up happily and voluntarily shared the food she carried, "How long have you been in here?"
"Two or three hours." Xu Huo accepted her kindness.
He Xiaoxiao shook her head and sighed, "I’ve been in for half a day already. I thought I was ahead of the game. I waited ages for it to start, wandered around for hours, and didn’t meet a single person... Seriously, not a single soul. I was bored to death, even wanted someone to stand guard while I used the bathroom. Let me tell you, the developers of this maze are total psychopaths, using mutated plants for toilets. Those things are specialized in devouring decay, slimy and disgusting when they stick to you!"
"As far as I know, there are proper bathrooms in the maze," Xu Huo replied bluntly, "Also, relieving yourself randomly may provoke attacks from the mutated plants."
He pointed to the corner ahead where a particularly large leaf was stretched out. "That is the doorbell for the bathroom."
He Xiaoxiao looked skeptical, "This isn’t my first time in the Poker Card Maze, and I’ve never heard of any bathrooms!"
She quickly rushed forward, grabbed the leaf, and gave it a tug. As expected, the plants on one side of the maze wall swiftly retreated, revealing a door with a bathroom sign on it, complete with a usage time limit—one hour max.
He Xiaoxiao pushed the door open and marveled, "It really is a bathroom! How did you figure that out?"
"But only an hour? That’s way too short!"
"If your physical condition isn’t great, I suggest taking medicine in advance," Xu Huo replied.
He Xiaoxiao was entirely unfazed and leaned on the doorframe, "Then wait for me here for a moment!"
With that, she shut the door, and the indicator light on the door panel switched to "In Use."
Xu Huo glanced around the bend ahead. If he didn’t encounter anyone soon, he might indeed have gone the wrong way.
Not long after, He Xiaoxiao came out, wiping her hands as she said, "If I’d known, I wouldn’t have bought that portable toilet. Those merchants outside are just heartless. They knew there were bathrooms in the maze but didn’t tell us."
Seeing Xu Huo choose the left path at the fork, she questioned, "Shouldn’t we go right? Right was the direction we’ve been heading all along."
"I suspect we took the wrong route. Let’s try a new direction," Xu Huo said.
The background introduction for this instance had minimal information. Any hints for clearing it should be tied to the "little surprises" mentioned by the Artifact Maker. Wandering for hours without hints likely meant they had gone astray.
"Switching directions may not help either," He Xiaoxiao remarked. "What if we were walking diagonally before, and now we’re going completely backward? Even if we are reversing course, it doesn’t necessarily mean we can return to our starting point."
Xu Huo gave her a deep look and said, "If this instance is designed to allow players to clear it, and both of our starting points are indeed along the maze’s outer edge, then based on the two directional shifts we made earlier, we should be close to the correct direction."
At least near a clue.
The instance’s exit was located at the maze’s center. No matter where players started at the edges, unless the maze was so massive that sticking to the wall for hours never led to a boundary, they were moving toward the interior regardless.
Even if they hugged the edges of the maze, when going in a straight line or slightly diagonal, they still had the choice of two major directions—left or right.
If they picked the right direction, the maze walls along the way would trigger fewer Mutant Plant encounters and occasionally offer clues. Conversely, choosing the wrong one would lead to decreased chances of obtaining clues and more frequent plant attacks.
From their current progress and the number of players encountered, it was unlikely they had covered more than half the maze’s total area. Hence, switching directions was beneficial.
As long as the general direction wasn’t completely off, there was still a chance to find hints.
"Really?" He Xiaoxiao frowned. "I hate mazes the most. Well, I have a trick to check if there’s anyone nearby. Where there are more people, it’s bound to be the right direction!"
She pulled out a rubber cat, blew air into its mouth, and the deflated rubber quickly expanded into a fully-formed blue cat once on the ground.
He Xiaoxiao stroked the chubby cheeks of the cat and pointed to the direction they were about to head. "Go find humans you dislike!"
The blue cat meowed, darted into the corridor... and was immediately smacked back to He Xiaoxiao’s feet by the vines swinging out from the maze walls. It rolled several times on the ground before shaking its head and climbing back up.
"Whoops, my bad." He Xiaoxiao pinched its tail, and the blue cat instantly perked up, bolting like lightning into the corridor. It nimbly dodged the incoming vines and vaulted off the walls to evade further attacks, passing through in record time.
Once the blue cat was gone, the vines on the maze walls retracted. He Xiaoxiao grinned at Xu Huo, "Let’s go too."
"Before we start, let me warn you about something," Xu Huo said. "I drew a really bad card—it might increase the number of Mutant Plant attacks."
He Xiaoxiao had already stepped inside and turned to respond, but before she could utter a word, the nearest maze wall split open like a vertical mouth. Countless green, spiked spheres the size of human heads spilled out!
Elastic and covered in needle-like spikes, the balls bounced deftly between the walls, quickly forming an impenetrable net of attacks in the center of the corridor.
"You really are unlucky." He Xiaoxiao commented on Xu Huo’s terrible luck, then pulled out two large barrels and hurled them forward. The barrels exploded upon being struck by the green spheres, splashing a sticky liquid that rapidly immobilized the spheres by adhering them to the walls. Seizing the moment, she touched the maze wall and activated a clue.
A scroll, roughly the size of a card, was projected into the air, though its contents were still hidden.
"I got a clue! Let’s go!" He Xiaoxiao called out to Xu Huo while running back.
Meanwhile, Xu Huo triggered a patch of Mutant Plants on another maze wall.
As brightly colored organisms burst out, he couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow—Mutant Plant Amity was exceptionally effective.
The duo turned into another corridor and, unsurprisingly, encountered more attacks. They blocked plant strikes while repeatedly touching the maze walls, clearing seven paths before the wave of plant aggression finally subsided.
They paused at a corner, where He Xiaoxiao eagerly studied the clue. "The maze’s final point is directly east of the corridor ahead."
She looked up and scanned their surroundings. "Directly east... Which way is east?"
