Chapter 1160: I Just Enjoy the Process
Chapter 1160: Chapter 1160: I Just Enjoy the Process
"That’s true," another man with a scarred arm interjected, "We just received a batch of Evolvers; we haven’t broken any laws at all. The state doesn’t even have the authority to deal with us, so what the hell do those Players think they are?"
"It’s just like what old Zhao said, the poor have risen up and now they stand up tall, daring to speak loudly," said the man with the scar, referring to the gaunt-faced man, "This time the Special Defense Department took a big hit. They’ll definitely want to make up for it."
The gaunt-faced old Zhao smiled, "Those people can’t stir up any waves."
A group of people chatted and laughed, making light of the chaos outside as if it was of no significance and had nothing to do with them.
"Really can’t stir up any waves?" Liu Zhichao leaned forward, hands on his knees, looking up at these high and mighty people, "Then how did Elder Yang die?"
"He was just unlucky." Elder Wan’s smile grew colder, "He was one of the few who couldn’t keep his cool and took his family to escape first. Perfect targets. Players who infiltrated the safe zone would naturally assume they were important figures and chase them to the end."
"It was also after players tracked them to the safe zone that the later events unfolded," Liu Zhichao said. "Players are more formidable than we thought. Aren’t you really afraid?"
The gaunt-faced man laughed dismissively, "A death scared you this much? Look around us, Players are everywhere, and this safe house is equipped with high-tech devices. If someone approaches, an alarm will be triggered... It’ll at least give you time to run."
The last sentence was purely a joke, yet before the sparse laughter could stop, Liu Zhichao added, "What if he entered the safe house with us?"
The voices in the room abruptly stopped. Elder Wan was the first to react, promptly pressing the alarm on his wrist, but unfortunately, no alarm sounded.
Similarly, the alarms of the gaunt-faced man and the scarred man didn’t sound either. The person closest to the door rushed to open it, but no matter how he twisted the doorknob, the door wouldn’t budge. The Players who were supposed to be guarding outside didn’t respond, as if they couldn’t hear the noise inside.
Realizing there was no way out, the gaunt-faced man and another Buzz Cut man drew their guns, but before they could aim at Xu Huo, the former’s fingers were severed along with the gunshot by a Secant Line, and the latter wisely lowered his hand without being attacked after seeing the gaunt-faced man’s awful state.
"Liu Zhichao" raised his hand and gestured towards the couch, saying to Buzz Cut, "Please Sit."
Buzz Cut didn’t understand, but he did as he was told.
"You’re not Liu Zhichao; Liu Zhichao came on the same plane as me, when did you replace him?" Elder Wan eyed the man beside him sharply.
"Where did Liu Zhichao go?" Buzz Cut asked after his colleague.
"He was thrown off the plane by me early on," Xu Huo answered Buzz Cut’s question. With a flick of his wrist, he tossed a pouch onto the coffee table. The cheap transparent plastic bag looked out of place in such a setting, but it was there, filled with vials of Evolver’s Blood, appearing so casual, yet everyone present knew that from this moment on, the contents of this bag would determine their fate.
"It’s impossible to get out," Xu Huo glanced at the scarred man and, wearing the face of Liu Zhichao, smiled, "There are six of you; how about drawing lots to decide who gets the injection first?"
"Six?" the scarred man was confused; there were nine people here besides Xu Huo.
Xu Huo nodded with his chin at Buzz Cut and two military officers sitting beside him with their spines straight, "These three are not on my target list."
"Considering all the noise you’ve made just now, you should know why I’m targeting you," he said, pulling out a dice, "One through six, six numbers. The person who rolls the highest number in the first round gets the injection. If there’s a tie, we keep rolling until there’s a difference. Fair enough?"
"There’s no need for you to do this, why bother?" Elder Wan, who was being deliberately ignored, managed to speak again, still maintaining his composure.
As Xu Huo toyed with the dice, letting the numbers roll, he said offhandedly, "I just really enjoy the process... just like you all do."
Now he was deciding who would get the shot with a dice, just as they once picked who needed to undergo Evolution from a list.
"Death before dishonor, you dare to mock us!" the scarred man rushed towards Xu Huo in a few strides, swinging his fist towards his face!
For a Player, even the most exquisite fighting skills of an ordinary person are like child’s play with a sword in hand. Xu Huo flicked his index finger, and the scarred man was pierced by an unseen Secant Line, his body breaking into several pieces.
The splatter of blood and organs caused Elder Wan and the gaunt-faced man to stand up sharply and step back. Even as steaming hot blood flowed to their feet, they remained indifferent to the person unconcerned about the massacre, their expressions turning extremely grim.
Xu Huo stayed seated, flipping through his phone for the scarred man’s information, and spoke, "Lin He, the real controller of Ice City Lab No. 66. It’s said that there’s a set of painful therapies for Evolvers there, designed to stimulate them through the initiation train period. However, the executives have repeatedly subjected Evolvers to torture beyond protocol, resulting in some dying from abuse or taking their own lives.
"But considering Lin He handed the lab over to his nephew, he was unaware of the details, so I gave him a quick end."
After making his point, he looked up at the remaining five people and flicked the dice their way, "Elder Wan, why don’t you start?"
Elder Wan was relatively calm, engaging in negotiation, "We can’t escape death, so why should we cooperate with you?"
Xu Huo raised an eyebrow with a smile, "Well then, I’ll offer you the same terms as Elder Yang. Whoever successfully evolves, I’ll let go."
"At the beginning of the game, we already did tests. The success rate for Evolution is very low," Elder Wan added.
Moreover, most of them were aging and couldn’t compare to the younger ones in terms of physical condition. Even if they successfully evolved, how many instances would they survive?
"I’ve already made concessions; demanding more would be pushing it," Xu Huo said, his face darkening slightly.
Left with no choice, Elder Wan reluctantly picked up the dice, fiddling with it before rolling it on the coffee table. When it finally landed on "1," he breathed a slight sigh of relief.
Xu Huo tilted his head, indicating for the gaunt-faced man to go next. He rolled a "4," his expression growing even darker and his gaze more anxiously fixed on the next three people rolling the dice.
But he was lucky; the last person rolled a "6."
Seeing the number "6," the man’s eyes filled with fear and the determination of a final stand. He tried to flip the coffee table and rush to the door—but the table didn’t turn over, and he merely spun around before being frozen in place, then like a marionette on strings, he was pulled invisibly around the table to Xu Huo.
Xu Huo opened the plastic bag and took out a syringe.
