Chapter 86: The Shock
Chapter 86: The Shock
"Chris..." Sky called out softly, but Chris didn’t turn back.
Chris’s anger continued to simmer; his voice tinged with bitterness as he settled into the couch, his back facing Sky. "Go ahead and sleep. Pretend like nothing happened."
He closed his eyes, allowing a heavy silence to settle between them. The room felt suffocating, burdened by the weight of their unspoken words.
Emotions churned within him—anger, concern, frustration—blending into a potent mix that left him hollow. This wasn’t how he had envisioned the night unfolding.
Minutes dragged by in restless silence. Chris’s anger began to ebb, replaced by a sense of resignation. He knew he couldn’t force Sky to open up, even though he was hurt. With a heavy sigh, he closed his eyes, finally succumbing to the exhaustion of the day.
Disappointment still lingered within him. He had wanted to be there for Sky, to offer support through the turmoil caused by the incident.
Just as Chris was on the verge of sleep, a soft touch on his shoulder roused him. He blinked his eyes open to find Sky crouched before him, illuminated by the dim glow of the nightlight.
"Chris," Sky whispered, his voice tinged with sincerity. "I’m sorry."
’Oh, God! Not right now,’ Chris thought, his mind resisting the sincerity he saw in Sky’s gaze.
Could he just be allowed to stay angry for a whole day without this boy trying to mess it up?
"I don’t want you to go to bed angry. I know you’re upset, and I didn’t mean for things to turn out this way."
Chris hated it when people acted softly toward him when he was mad. And he REALLY hated it when it was Sky doing so.
Chris’s gaze met Sky’s, the storm of emotions inside him subsiding slightly in the face of Sky’s earnestness. But his pride held him back; he didn’t want to give in so easily, especially when it was Sky he was dealing with.
Sky persisted, his determination showing through. "I don’t want to see you sleeping on the couch because of me. If you’d rather I leave the room, I will. I just want you to be okay."
The inner battle raged within Chris. Frustration and a longing for resolution clashed within him. He sighed, torn between his feelings and reality. "I’m fine here, Sky. Don’t worry about it."
Sky’s persistence remained unyielding. "Please, Chris. I don’t want this tension between us."
Chris avoided Sky’s gaze, his inner conflict evident. He wanted to hold onto his anger, yet he also desired to mend the rift.
Sky’s voice was gentle, a balm to his wounded emotions. "I know we can’t just pretend everything’s fine after what happened, but I want to make things right in any way that I can."
"Sky, there’s nothing to make right," Chris retorted, his frustration evident.
Sky’s gaze softened even more. "Let’s switch places then. I’ll take the couch."
Chris shook his head, his anger slowly waning. "No, Sky. Just go to sleep."
Determination shone in Sky’s eyes. "Chris, I really don’t want you to sleep on the couch. I’ll take it this time."
"I said no!"
"Then let’s share the bed? Hmm?" Sky blinked at him with those crazy, innocent eyes.
No! Don’t do that right now!
Chris remained stubborn for a moment, but eventually, his resolve crumbled. "Fine," he mumbled, reluctantly agreeing. "But I’m not going to forgive you."
Sky’s smile grew warmer. "I understand. Just come to bed." A faint smile played on his lips as he stood up and waited for Chris.
Chris hesitated, then, with a resigned sigh, he moved towards the bed. He lay down, keeping his back turned to Sky, intentionally ignoring him.
The night was quiet, the tension still hanging between them, but as the darkness enveloped the room, the distance between Chris and Sky began to blur. The soft rhythm of their breathing filled the space, a reminder of their shared presence.
Chris remained silent, his emotions churning. Sleep started to pull at his consciousness, and despite his lingering annoyance, he found himself gradually succumbing to its embrace.
As sleep wrapped its gentle arms around him, Chris felt Sky’s sincere apology echoing in his mind. A whisper from within urged him to find forgiveness, to bridge the gap that had formed between them.
As he drifted into an uneasy sleep, he realized that sometimes understanding and healing take time. And as much as it pained him to do so, he would have to accept that some battles were fought in silence, even if it left him going to bed angry and conflicted.
The next morning, Chris woke up to the soft rays of morning sunlight filtering through the curtains. For a fleeting moment, he enjoyed the tranquillity before his thoughts quickly returned to the events of the previous night. He looked to his side at Sky, who was still asleep, a spark of irritation igniting within him.
It was the second time he had woken up before Sky. At least they were not cuddling this time. In fact, with how pissed he had been last night, he was sure he would have kicked off Sky in his sleepy daze if he had come closer to him even a little bit. Chris glared at him, not sure why he was still tolerating this guy when he should be kicking him out.
But deep down, he knew the answer, even if he didn’t want to admit it right now.
"I can sense your anger even in my sleep," Sky muttered, disrupting his thoughts.
Well, he had woken up first. Again.
Sky slowly opened his eyes to look at Chris, but was met with Chris’s annoyed gaze.
Sky’s expression turned more serious. "I hope you know that I didn’t want last night to end the way it did."
It was too early for this.
He didn’t want to have this conversation first thing after waking up.
"I’m not talking about this with you," Chris said as he got out of bed.
Sky sat up too, spotting a bed hair. "But I have been feeling bad about it. I don’t like it when you are mad."
Chris’s gaze bore into him, searching. "You should have thought about that before you acted the way you did. Do you think I worry about other people like I worry for you? Yet you made me feel like a complete idiot last night, and I get it. I crossed the line, and I am trying to NOT do that ever again—"
"Chris, I really appreciate how much you care about me!" Sky interrupted. "I believe it was the reason I called you that night instead of any of the other guys because I trust you! I also believed... you would be able to respect my wishes—"
"HOLD IT!" Chris snapped, trying to swear, but he swallowed it in. His jaw clenched, and he struggled to keep his composure. "I honestly do not give two shits about whatever you decide to do anymore." He said coldly and walked away from there, heading for the bathroom.
His entire actions were aggressive, and he also took it out on his toothbrush and toothpaste. Immediately after he started brushing, he heard Sky’s footsteps behind him. The intrusion only fueled his annoyance. He glanced at the mirror, catching Sky’s reflection as he appeared behind him. Chris’s eyes locked onto Sky’s frustrated look in the mirror, a silent message of annoyance and frustration passing between them.
"You know there is something called privacy, don’t you?" Chris asked coldly.
Sky had a hesitant look on his face. "This is something I usually do not tell people about. Only less than a handful of people know that—"
"That you are good at apologizing and acting the victim?" Chris cut him off.
"Can you just let me talk, damn it!"
"Now you want to talk?" Chris scoffed in disbelief.
"THIS IS NOT JUST ANY CASE, CHRIS!" Sky snapped.
Chris’s irritation spiked, and he turned to Sky, his glare fierce. "YES! BECAUSE IT IS A DRUG CASE!"
Sky sighed in frustration and shook his head.
Chris thought anger was the greatest emotion he could feel in that moment. But how wrong he was! Because the next words Sky said shook him.
"This... involves my f-fiancée’s family," Sky said quietly, his gaze holding both earnestness and vulnerability.
Chris felt as if the air had been knocked out of him, and his toothbrush slipped from his hand and clattered onto the floor. His mind struggled to process Sky’s words. "F-fiancée?" he stammered, his voice barely audible. He guessed he had heard it incorrectly.
Sky nodded solemnly. "I’ve... been engaged for a while now." He confessed.
He stared at Sky, his mind a maelstrom of conflicting emotions. "You’re engaged..." Chris whispered, his voice filled with disbelief.
There was no way he could hide his reaction to the news or act nonchalant about it. The shock was still too great for him.
"To... Ash’s sister," Sky revealed quietly.
Chris’s mind reeled, struggling to process the revelation. "You’re... engaged... to Ash’s sister?" he repeated, a mix of shock and confusion swirling within him.
Either he was hearing things. Or HE WAS HEARING THINGS!
