Chapter 189: Too late for no recklessness

Those words looked like they had physically hurt Ash.

Sky hated him.

"The only reason I still tolerate you is because of Mei. Do not push your luck."

"I am sorry for the past." Ash said, going to stand in front of Sky when he moved again. "I was young!"

"That is not a fucking excuse!" Sky snapped. His gaze was burning now. "You ruined my life." The pain was so clear in Sky’s voice and even his eyes said the same. "My... my grandmother wouldn’t have..." He swallowed, trying to suppress the emotions.

"I’m... sorry," Ash said, a tear slipping out of his eyes, which he quickly wiped away, trying to regain his tough facade.

"I will make it all up to you. Do not... go to him," Ash said, sounding like a kidnapper trying to sweet-talk a kid with candy. "I will do everything for you."

Sky scoffed in disbelief. "I will tolerate every shit you have done and are doing, Ash. But... if you ever try to woo me with useless talk, I swear to God, I am going to kill you."

"WHY ARE YOU SO WICKED?" Ash snapped.

"You think you’re so special, Sky? You think he’ll choose you over his own world? Over everything he’s ever known when you’ve barely known each other for less than a year?"

Sky gritted his teeth.

"I should be angry that he is a rich boy, but no, I am glad." He let out a short laugh. "Because then we both know a nobody like you cannot have him."

Sky hadn’t wanted to think about that reality. That he was a nobody when compared to the Owen’s world. He had refused to think about that. But Ash... he just had to bring it up again. He always knew the right things or maybe wrong things to do to set him off. To make him miserable.

"He is in a different world. You think anyone can get into his world now? I’m sure by now everyone is trying to have him." He pointed at the bruise on his cheek. "And this is the proof of it."

"What does that have to do with anything?" Sky asked, trying to rein in his anger.

Then, in a voice far too casual, Ash said, "My father asked if I knew Chris."

Sky frowned. "And?"

Ash laughed under his breath. "I said yeah. Of course. Told him he was the dude I got arrested for hitting me."

Ash’s smirk was forced now. "Oh, my old man lost it. Called me a useless fuck. Said if I liked boys so much, why didn’t I seduce Chris instead of arresting him?" Ash spread his arms mockingly. "Apparently, I should’ve been whoring myself out for business instead of ruining our opportunities."

Sky’s stomach churned.

"Oh, it gets better," Ash interrupted, his voice edged with something dangerous. "Mei was also there. And it all went to hell. Because he could not accept her. But he was edging me to do THAT. He still lost it. Because he is never wrong. Screaming, throwing shit—" He gestured vaguely to his face. "And, well. Here we are."

Sky swallowed hard. The weight of everything settled heavily between them.

Mei hadn’t mentioned anything to him.

"How is Mei?"

Ash chuckled dryly. "That is not the point now, is it?" He paused. "There are a lot of people out there who would be pushing themselves or their kids to have Chris. In the business world, no one gives a damn about love or morals. You think... his family would suddenly want you? Or even Chris?"

Ash exhaled deeply. "You are going to get your heart broken. But... I will be here. For you."

Sky moved fast. This time, his hand gripped Ash’s hair so tight that he pulled his head back. The boy winced.

"I don’t fucking care about any of those shits." Sky’s gaze locked with his intensely, making sure Ash got the message. "Anyone who tries to covet what is mine will die by my hands."

Ash’s eyes slowly widened.

"...And if you don’t get rid of this disgusting feeling you have for me or if try to come between us by messing with my head, my promise still stands. I will rip you apart and send your pieces in a parcel to your father." With one last dark glare, he shoved him hard onto the floor before storming out.

Sky didn’t look back as he stormed out of Ash’s apartment. His lungs burned, his fists still clenched so tight his nails left crescent moons in his palms.

That had been a waste of time. A complete, infuriating waste of time.

Ash always had to turn everything into a power struggle, like every interaction was a game only he knew the rules to. Sky shouldn’t have expected anything different, but the sheer frustration of it all sat heavy in his chest.

Disgusting.

Ash’s confession clung to him like rot, but he refused to let it fester. None of it mattered. Not Ash’s bruised face, not his tears, not the way his voice had cracked. Sky had room for only one thing in his head now: Chris.

His phone buzzed. He pulled it out, expecting something useful, but it was just a text from Henry.

Henry: Don’t do anything reckless.

Sky huffed out a bitter laugh. Too late for that.

He wasn’t the kind of person to sit around and overthink things. If one door closed, he’d find another way in. If Ash wasn’t going to give him Wilson’s number, fine. He’d go straight to the source.

Chris.

Chris was probably stressed now, he knew it. But he wanted to see him. He wasn’t asking for anything much. Just to see his. And if Chris didn’t want to see him, then he’d have to say it to his face. Sky wasn’t going to listen to secondhand bullshit from anyone.

He checked his trip information again. Getting a direct flight from this city was a pain, so he’d have to travel to the next town first. It was a hassle, but he was moving tonight. No hesitation.

But first, he had to go home to grab a few things.

And that was where the next problem came in.

His parents had been calling. Repeatedly.

And according to Rain’s last text, they were both at home.

Waiting for him.

Sky exhaled sharply, rubbing his temples. He really didn’t have time for this. But avoiding them now would only make things worse.

He shoved his phone back in his pocket and headed for home.
