Chapter 165: Mrs. Sky’s mother getting the roles wrong too.

His mother’s next words hit him like ice water to the face.

"It’s your grandmother’s memorial."

And then—

All the color drained from Sky’s face.

Shit.

How... had he forgotten that?

Chris, watching the scene unfold, felt like he was missing something. Sky’s reaction wasn’t just surprise—it was something deeper. His whole body tensed, like something heavy had just slammed into him.

And then, what was even weirder, was that his mother didn’t look upset. She looked... pleased.

Chris narrowed his eyes slightly. Why?

"Sky," his mother said gently, tilting her head. "Did you forget?"

Sky hesitated, then exhaled, rubbing his temple. "I... yeah. I’m sorry. I’m so so—"

He was about to say more or probably start spiraling. But before he could, his mother reached out, taking his hand.

"It’s the first time," she said, smiling up at him. "And I’m proud of you."

He shook his head. He looked like he had committed an evil sin. One worthy of death.

But she hugged him.

Chris, still entirely lost, just stood there, observing, feeling like he was witnessing something he wasn’t supposed to.

Should he just sneak out and run away?

But that was impossible when they were just right by the door.

Sky, on the other hand, didn’t react immediately his mother hugged him. He just stood stiffly in his mother’s embrace, eyes still slightly distant.

After a few moments, she let him go, patting him lovingly on his arm before she then turned to Chris.

"Chris, you can join us in case you are free. But if you are going to be busy, it’s fine."

Chris wasn’t sure what to say. He didn’t have anything to do, but at the same time, he wasn’t sure Sky would want him here. But then again, he also didn’t want to turn down the woman.

He looked at Sky. Sky bit his lower lip, as though he was also torn and wasn’t sure what Chris should decide.

That was an absentminded action from Sky. But boy... did he look so sex—

He shook his head.

What the hell! Sky was standing beside his mother and they were both looking at him, waiting to hear his answer. This really was NOT the time to be getting seduced!

"That... would be lovely. I just happened to be free today," he said with a good boy smile. The kind of innocent smile that would NEVER give away the kind of dirty thoughts he had had about her son.

"Great!" She said, the smile never leaving her face. "Would you care to join me in the kitchen to make some pastries?"

Wait what?

Even Sky seemed thrown off by the invitation.

Chris barely had time to process the sudden shift in conversation.

He had never baked shit before.

He didn’t even know how things had gotten to this point.

But Mrs. Sato was already looking at him expectantly.

His gaze darted between the mother and son.

Sky looked apologetic, then he turned to his mother.

"I’ll join you instead."

"Of course you would. But I’d also prefer you help with cleaning around the house a bit. Do more strenuous things for us."

Yo, Mrs. Sky’s mother, why aren’t you asking me to help you clean the house instead while your son join you in the kitchen?’ Chris badly wanted to ask. He felt a bit offended that even unknowingly, his mother had gotten their roles reversed especially since it wasn’t up to 5 minutes ago that her son had indirectly told him he he—Chris—was going to be beneath him.

But he didn’t dare say any stupid thing.

Instead, he forced a polite smile. "Uh... sure. I’d be thrillllled," he drawled.

"You are so lovely!" The woman giggled before turning and walking away as easily as she had come in like she had not messed them up a bit.

The door closed behind her.

Chris watched Sky carefully. He looked awful. Not just pale, but like something was gnawing at him from the inside.

Chris stepped closer, lowering his voice. "I’m not gonna ask if you’re okay, because obviously, you’re not." His voice was steady, but softer than usual. "But it’s going to be fine. And if you want to talk, you can."

He really wanted to know why he was suddenly like this since his mother mentioned that today was his grandmother’s memorial.

Sky swallowed, his throat tight. He pushed down the weight in his chest and tried to focus. "I’m sorry for dragging you into this," he muttered. "You don’t have to stay. I’ll tell my mom—"

He turned, but before he could take a step, Chris grabbed his wrist.

"It’s okay." Chris’s grip was firm but reassuring. "I’m okay." Then, smirking slightly, he added, "Unless... you just don’t want me here with your family?"

Sky immediately shook his head. "That’s not it."

But the truth was, he couldn’t bring himself to tell Chris what the real problem was.

Chris studied him for a moment, then sighed. "Look, if I try to escape now, that’s just gonna make it more suspicious."

Sky hesitated.

That was true.

Chris crossed his arms. "Relax. No one’s gonna look at us and magically know we were in a... less-than-platonic situation."

Maybe he shouldn’t have said that.

But Sky didn’t believe that. He was convinced that anyone who looked at him would be able to tell. That it was written all over his face.

His godmother had figured things out even when he hadn’t even done anything with Chris back then. Today he would be facing his parents—and Rain.

Chris, watching the turmoil in his expression, exhaled before stepping even closer. Then, without a word, he cupped Sky’s face.

"Relax," Chris murmured, his voice lighter now. "I suck with parents, but I am a charmer. So don’t overthink it. I won’t say or do anything stupid outside this room."

His words seemed to surprisingly make Sky become calmer. It was crazy how much effect Chris had on him.

He nodded slowly.

Chris smiled, as though that was all he needed. And then...

He pressed a gentle kiss to Sky’s forehead. Light. Tender.

Sky froze, his breath catching at once.

Chris pulled back, coming directly to face Sky’s very wide eyes.

"Cute." Chris chuckled at his reaction before casually heading for the door. Just before he left, he glanced back over his shoulder.

"Fix your face before you come down," he teased. "Unless you really want others to take one look at you and know," and then he was out of the room, leaving Sky standing there—still stunned, still feeling the warmth lingering on his forehead.

This wasn’t their first kiss. They had made out, sure. But this? This was... why...?
