Chapter 122: Meeting the Fiancée

Chapter 122: Meeting the Fiancée

The rest of Chris’s day felt like a slow descent into a pit of unease. He tried to read, to distract himself, but the words swam before his eyes. He tried to nap, but his dreams were filled with Sky’s disappointed face. It was as if his whole being was a tuning fork, vibrating with the low hum of impending doom.

He was beginning to hate himself for being this pathetic. He had reminded himself several times that he was Christopher Owen. But the more he seemed to remind himself, the more those words felt like a mockery. He felt like a mockery.

Then, the phone rang, jarring him from his restless doze. It was Rachel, her voice laced with concern.

"Chris, you okay?"

He assumed she already knew the plans got cancelled. How though? He sighed, "Peachy."

"I was..." She paused and sighed before she continued in a quiet voice. "I spoke with Noel. Found out they are at Sato’s place for a get-together with family and friends."

Chris paused. Get together with family and friends? Get-together!

It was with her. It had to be her.

"And?" He wanted to know what else Noel had said. Why exactly where they having this? What was the purpose? Who else were they with?

"I’m just checking in, dummy. It sounds like... you guys didn’t go out today again?"

He could hear the unspoken question in her voice: Had Sky cancelled on him again?

The thought of Sky enjoying a party with friends while ignoring him sent a fresh wave of fury through him.

If Rachel wasn’t mentioning a fiancée, then it was obvious Noel hadn’t mentioned it to her. That group of friends kept everything about Sky’s life as private as possible. Even the FBI weren’t exactly that secretive.

"Are you okay?" She asked again quietly when he still didn’t say any word, just lost in his thoughts.

"Why wouldn’t I be?" Chris snapped, the words dripping with venom.

"Chris..." Rachel’s voice was cautious, "You’re not going to do anything crazy, are you?"

Anything crazy? "Like what?"

"I don’t know? Cause I know you are pretty impulsive at times."

He forced a laugh, hollow and brittle. "You think I’m gonna do something crazy like show up there? I’m not that crazy, you know?"

But even as he said the words, a reckless thought began to take root. Yes. He was that crazy.

And so, fueled by a potent mix of curiosity and defiance, he found himself at Sky’s doorstep.

He could already hear a few voices from outside. There were also different cars parked outside. Though not as much as the last party. But one car stood out. It was a very eye-catching red audi which looked like it didn’t belong there. His CIA brain went into work, deducing it had to belong to her.

This was it. He was here. Thanks to Sky, his reckless side had been awakened. And he was going to see this through.

His hand hovered over the doorbell, a storm of conflicting emotions raging within him. Just as he was about to ring it, the door opened, revealing Sky’s mother, who was startled to find him as much as he was startled by the sudden door opening. Her eyes lit up with surprise and warmth when she saw him.

"Dear! Sky didn’t mention you were coming. Come in! I was just about to throw out the trash." She said, her tone still heavily laced with surprise.

Well, Sky didn’t know he was coming either. Haha.

"I can help you." He offered kindly, pointing at the heavy bag of trash in her hand. For some reason, he liked this woman.

"Of course not, sweetheart. Just go in and join your friends. Have fun." She smiled broadly at him as she stepped out while he returned her warm smile and held the door out for her before he smirked and stepped inside.

The get-together seemed like a pretty casual meeting because he found Sky’s father, his uncle and two other men whom he couldn’t recognize watching a game of hockey, their commentatory even louder than the one from the game. Some women were in another corner. They were also chatting and laughing loudly. Some of them looked familiar. He had seen them the last time he came here for the Mrs. Sato’s birthday.

He could also find Sky’s three friends chatting by the dining while playing a game of card with two girls and a guy. He had also seen them during the last party. He also recognised the little girl handing out the cards. He had first seen her the first time he saw Sky. She was his cousin.

Everyone seemed invested in what they were doing and didn’t take notice of him. So he scanned around for Sky who was not in view. Neither was there any strange looking girl.

He approached the dining just as the main door opened, and Mrs. Sato came in, complaining about why Rain was taking a long time returning from where she had no idea about.

"Hey!" Chris said to the table, getting the card players’ attention. When they saw him, the three friends looked visibly surprised.

"Where is Sky?" Chris asked, going straight to the point.

"What are you doing..." Noel was asking, but Henry pointed at the door ahead, letting Chris know Sky was there.

It was the kitchen.

"Thank you, buddy." Chris said before flicking at one of the cards in his hand, a sign for him to play that one.

His eyes lit up, and when he played it, it was enough to drag everyone’s attention back to the game, while Henry cackled loudly, having won that round.

Chris entered the kitchen and found Sky. He was doing the dishes with someone else. Beside him stood a young lady, petite and curvaceous with long hair cascading down up to her waist. She wore a corporate yellow pant and white shirt tucked in.

Their backs were to him, so he stood there, watching. They were laughing.

Laughing.

How dare he.

"You really should write me a song, you know? It’s long overdue." She said in a light tone.

Even her voice sounded pleasant to Chris’ ears. She sounded beautiful. He imagined she would be a wonderful singer.

"How much would you be willing to pay for that?" Sky’s voice was also light as he handed her the washed dish for her to clean it.

"My cuteness is enough payment for you." She turned to face him, blinking cutely.

He looked at her and faked a gag.

"Who spoilt you this much to want money for everything?" She laughed before slapping him in the butt, stunning Chris who was watching.

He found it hard to believe how they were getting along just well.

He had had this crazy thought in his head that he was saving Sky from something he didn’t want.

But this...?

"Hey! Don’t do that here. The family’s out there." He said, laughing, as he turned to scout to check if they were safe from other eyes.

But of course, they weren’t exactly safe.

The sound of a broken plate reverberated in the kitchen as soon as both guys’ eyes met. Sky had accidentally dropped it, startled.
