Chapter 118: The person you like...

No amount of apology can exonerate me from what I did to you, dear readers, but I hope you will forgive me for disappearing on you.

A lot has happened in the past nine months—physically, emotionally, and even mentally. But I am hoping that I will be able to finish what I had started here.

I lost some drafts I had; they all disappeared. So it took me a while to decide what to do with this book. I also had to start rereading it just to remember the details. It’s all so fresh for me right now, so forgive me if there are some discrepancies now.

Also, if you are still interested in this book, I hope you can try rereading previous Chapters to remember the details so the flow becomes easier to grasp.

I am well.

I haven’t been able to read all your messages because I just cannot bring myself to read them after disappearing for so long. But know that it wasn’t intentional.

Thank you for waiting and checking in.

Thank you for your patience too.

Knowing you are still following would give me the drive to complete this book. So please leave a comment.

Tomorrow.

Tomorrow.

The evening suddenly felt very slow for Chris. He was anxious. He kept feeling as though something might just happen, and Sky would call to let him know he wouldn’t be able to make it.

He felt that things were moving too smoothly lately between the two of them. Well, not exactly smoothly, but Sky had been receptive to so many things that had happened between them. And this sudden ’outing’ might be a wake-up call for him. He might just suddenly realize that so many things were moving in a very different fashion and put an end to it.

If he didn’t, then the universe might, since the universe was fond of making his love life miserable.

So when his phone dinged with a message from Sky, he held his breath before opening it, expecting Sky to suddenly give him an excuse. However, to his surprise, it was a reminder from Sky to take his medicine in an hour. Nothing else.

He kept looking at the message. For some reason, he expected another message to pop up, beginning with an apology for how he couldn’t make it, but after waiting for what felt like hours and no other message followed, he began to wonder if this was truly happening. Was he not going to reject? Were they truly going to go out tomorrow? The two of them?

"What are you so engrossed in that you haven’t noticed my presence yet?"

The voice behind him made him flinch. It came as a shock to hear a voice behind him when he was supposed to be alone in the room.

He looked back at Rachel, as he sat up on his bed. She was glaring suspiciously at him.

"Jeez, Rachel! You didn’t have to scare me like that! Why did you come in so quietly? Are you a stalker?"

"Maybe if you had heard me when i knocked and also entered your room, wondering if you had collapsed, you would have realized someone else was in the room with you. Whose text were you anxiously waiting for?" She asked with the suspicious gaze not leaving the phone in his hand.

He shut the screen and looked at the bag in her hand, which obviously smelled like food, and smiled.

"Is that for me?"

"Well, maybe. But I’m changing my mind since you seemed so engrossed in whatever you were doing that you didn’t even respond to my text."

"You texted me?" He asked before checking his phone.

"Just wow!" She exclaimed and, like a drama queen, turned for the door.

"Yo, yo, yo!" He exclaimed as he rushed after her, catching her hand just as she stepped out the door.

"My bad, I was totally lost in my own world. I mean... I didn’t even notice when you came in. Sorry Ray."

She scoffed and kept her gaze forward, refusing to look at him.

"Come on, you know you’re the best girl in the world. You mean everything to me, I’d be lost without you." He said, giving her a playful, manipulative pout.

"Stop being so dramatic." She rolled her eyes before sighing and returning into the room. As she brushed past him, he smiled triumphantly.

Rachel went into mommy-mode, interrogating him about his health, what the doctor prescribed, and everything else she could think of as she served him the food on a tray she got from the stack of plates they had in the room. The soup smelled fresh and delicious, and so did the other vegetables, which made him suddenly begin to miss home.

As they spoke, she moved around him.

Rachel was indeed a darling. She had brought him two days’ worth of food, stacking it in the small refrigerator they rarely used. He wasn’t sure how to tell her he didn’t eat stale food, but she seemed to get it when she turned around and found him staring at the refrigerator apprehensively.

But instead of getting annoyed, she scoffed. "Rich people problems." He wanted to remind her she had also been a rich person and should understand but he didn’t.

"I might as well take it with me. Microwave it and bring it tomorrow so you won’t think it’s stale."

He chuckled. "Sorry for the stress. Really. I wish you realized how grateful I am toward you."

"I know. That’s why I’m still lingering around. Maybe when you inherit your company, you’ll remember my loyalty and make me the MD of one of the subsidiaries." She joked as she sat beside him, giving him his pack of medicines and a glass of water.

Chris grinned. "You aim for too little, princess. Are you sure you don’t want to marry me instead?"

She eyed him. "In case you have not noticed the obvious, I do not have a dick."

"Hey! Did you forget that I like women too?" He said defensively.

"Really? So what happened with Rain?"

That caught him off guard.

"What happened with her?" He asked innocently.

"I bumped into her earlier. She didn’t look very well. Also, she was indirectly trying to find out about our ’kind of’ relationship and if I knew who you liked. Let’s not also mention that awkward kiss that almost happened and how you turned your face away from her. I couldn’t even bring it up because it was too embarrassing to witness so I cannot even begin to imagine how she must have felt. Did you reject her?"

"Wait, what? She didn’t look well?" Chris asked, confused. When they had spoken earlier, she had been quite relaxed and had accepted it in good faith when he told her he wanted them to be good friends.

"She seemed pretty relaxed when we spoke."

"So... you did reject her?" Rachel said, giving him a suspicious look again.

"Well, technically, there was no rejection. I just told her I didn’t want to lead her on. I don’t want that awkwardness from the other day to happen again between us."

"You mean you don’t want her to try kissing you again? But I thought maybe something might work out between you two. You also seemed like you were really into her lately."

"I know. I know. My bad. And I regret it." He sighed in frustration. If he hadn’t been too interested in digging into Sky’s life, he wouldn’t have done that. He felt like an idiot right now. "Rain is very lovely." He said honestly. "But... friendship is what I want with her."

"So... who do you want something serious with?" Rain raised a questioning brow at him. "I mean... the person you like. Her brother?" Her inquiring gaze pierced him. Chris was lucky he wasn’t eating right now. He would have choked to death from the direct way Rachel had dropped this on him.

She continued to look at him. It was as if she knew but was waiting for him to talk to her, to admit everything to her, even the things he could not admit to himself.

Had he come to trust her so much that he indeed wanted to share it all with her?

Yes, he trusted her. But with every human, there were limitations.

Her eyes bore into his, and he also maintained the eye contact before he sighed and dropped his spoon.
