Chapter 90: Chapter 90: Someone from Headquarters Comes
The booze wasn’t excessive; just one bottle per person, and that was it. Mia behaved quite well tonight, having her drink and braised pork before obediently going upstairs to sleep with Ruth Wilcox.
The night passed without incident, but in the predawn hours of the next day, while Yusuf Zuck was still sound asleep, suddenly, there was a knocking at his door.
"Who is it?" Yusuf Zuck jolted upright.
"Yusuf, get up, there’s something urgent." Ruth’s voice came from outside the door.
"Oh, okay, right away, right away." Yusuf Zuck, sensing the urgency in Ruth’s voice, rubbed his face and got out of bed immediately.
Shortly after, Yusuf Zuck emerged and saw Ruth Wilcox with a face full of worry.
Indeed, her complexion looked awful, and it was more than just lack of sleep; she also appeared to be deeply troubled.
"What’s wrong?" Yusuf Zuck frowned.
"Someone from Ferreni Headquarters is coming today; they’re already in the air and are expected to arrive in the capital around 10:30 this morning." Ruth Wilcox took a deep breath, "So, let’s go to the company early to get things ready."
"Someone from Ferreni Headquarters is coming? What for?" Yusuf Zuck asked, puzzled.
"I asked Grandpa, and there are three reasons," Ruth Wilcox said with a bitter smile. "The first is the cooperation with Parker I already reported to the headquarters, and now that it’s fallen through, many people there are very unhappy."
"The second is the recent dip in Ferreni’s performance due to the bombing case. There’s been a lot of noise at the headquarters, all kinds of rumors are flying around, saying that I, a woman, can’t handle the big picture."
"The third reason, Grandpa said, is that the headquarters have received word that my bodyguard has beaten up Tyler Nash. The headquarters takes this very seriously and fears that we may need to give the Nash family an explanation. Grandpa told me to be mentally prepared." Ruth Wilcox glanced at Yusuf Zuck with an aggrieved look.
"Mentally prepared? What does that mean?" A pit formed in Yusuf Zuck’s stomach. Had he inadvertently caused trouble for Ruth Wilcox? And now the headquarters were aware of the incident in Shanghai? There must be a mole in the company.
The fact that he had beaten Tyler Nash was definitely known to people like the board secretary since the police had likely checked with them before they came looking for him.
"The people from headquarters are up to no good; if they were, they wouldn’t be coming. And Grandpa has retired; though he still has a say at headquarters, he doesn’t involve himself in the operations. Currently, my uncle is the head there."
"What about your dad, your mom?" Yusuf Zuck had never asked Ruth Wilcox about her family background, her parents, and relatives.
"They... died in a car accident on a trip," Ruth Wilcox’s eyes reddened; "I was twelve that year."
"I’m sorry, I’m so sorry." Yusuf Zuck immediately became flustered, not knowing what to do, upon learning that her parents had tragically died in an accident.
"It’s okay, I’m used to it now," Ruth Wilcox shook her head, "Let’s go."
"Will your uncle really take you down?" Yusuf Zuck immediately followed and asked.
"If I had been performing exceptionally, he wouldn’t have a reason. The subsidiary here in the capital was just beginning to improve when the Parker incident happened. So, this becomes the perfect excuse to take me out. I might have to return to the United States to report and then..."
"Then what?" Yusuf Zuck became tense, he was driving for Ruth Wilcox not just for money now, but out of a desire to protect her, to repay her kindness.
"The best outcome would be to go home as a layperson, or work as a low-power junior employee at headquarters! It’s for sure not going to work out with the Ferreni here in the capital because they need to give an explanation to the Nash family. Removing me would be the only way the Nash family would let Ferreni off the hook."
"And you..." Ruth Wilcox glanced at Yusuf Zuck and lowered her head, "I’m sorry, it’s my fault. You’ll probably be dismissed."
"I don’t care about that, it’s mainly about you," Yusuf Zuck got into the car with Ruth Wilcox, becoming very calm now, neither angry nor panicky. After a moment of thought, he said, "Ms. Wilcox, I consider you a friend and a confidant. Your kindness to me, I see in my eyes and remember in my heart."
"To tell you the truth, being with you every day, it’s impossible not to like you; but I dare not aim so high."
"What are you talking about? Don’t talk nonsense," Ruth Wilcox said, looking down.
"I’m not talking nonsense, let me finish," Yusuf Zuck took a deep breath. "It’s rare to come across such a good boss like you. I really enjoy working by your side, even now. Even though I’ve made tens of millions, I’ve never considered resigning."
"You just said you dragged me down, but in reality, it’s me who’s burdening you," Yusuf Zuck sighed. "However, don’t feel sad. Instead of staying in the Clan to make progress, why not work with me? Just trust me, and I promise, within ten years, I’ll give you a Ferreni!"
"Let’s talk about it after we’ve received the people from the headquarters," she said.
"What do you mean, ’let’s talk about it after we’ve received the people from headquarters’?" Yusuf Zuck shook his head. "I’m someone who never accepts things passively, so there’s no need for them to fire me—I don’t want to continue serving them after being fired. So, later when you go to the headquarters, just fire me first. That will also make a good impression on them."
"And about that antique shop I mentioned before, I’m definitely going to do it. So, you... will you help me?" Yusuf Zuck was not talking about partnership but rather asking for her emotional support.
"Isn’t forty million plus not enough? How much more capital do you need?" Ruth Wilcox thought for a moment before speaking.
"My friend said that we need at least one hundred million," replied Yusuf Zuck.
"Oh, I have another thirty million of my own, and I can take another thirty million from Mia. That should bring us over a hundred million. However, I probably won’t be able to stay in Beijing; I must go back to the United States. So, consider this money a loan from me—when you make it back, you can pay me back," she said.
"Then let’s divide it based on shares, sixty percent for you and forty percent for me, with me as the registered legal representative. Does that work? I’ll have someone draw up an agreement with a lawyer later." While saying this, Yusuf Zuck glanced at Ruth Wilcox through the rearview mirror, and at that moment, she was also looking at him.
Both of their gazes met, each betraying a sense of reluctance to part. Of course, shortly after their eyes met, they quickly shifted their gazes away.
"Whatever you think is best, I trust you," Ruth Wilcox said softly.
"Do you have to go back to the United States?" Yusuf Zuck said gravely.
"One reason is the need to report back in the United States, and the other is to spend time with my grandfather. So, I don’t know when I’ll be able to come back. Moreover, the headquarters won’t rest easy if I stay. You should understand," she explained.
"Then, what about your safety...?"
"Once I’m back, there won’t be anyone targeting me anymore."
"Hey, there’s someone I know up ahead!" Suddenly, while Yusuf Zuck and Ruth Wilcox were speaking, they came upon a red traffic light, and right in front of the Audi A8 was a BMW bearing a license plate Yusuf Zuck recognized—it belonged to the police officer, Ember Vance!
Seeing Ember Vance’s BMW, Yusuf Zuck squinted his eyes and immediately took out his phone to dial Ember’s number, which he had saved.
The call was answered after three rings, and Ember Vance sounded puzzled as she asked, "Who’s this?"
"Do you have a short memory, Officer Vance? It’s Yusuf Zuck. I want to ask you something. Have you made any progress on Ferreni’s bombing case? And about Ms. Wilcox’s near kidnap—you should be aware of it at your station, right? How long has it been, and we still haven’t heard anything? Are you just enjoying your government salary, driving a BMW and living it up, without doing any real work?"
"Get moving on Ferreni’s bombing case and Ms. Wilcox’s kidnap case."
Without waiting for Ember Vance to reply, Yusuf Zuck hung up the phone with a "snap." He was venting his frustration—if the police had solved the case earlier and caught Mr. X behind the scenes, perhaps Ruth Wilcox wouldn’t have had to leave.
Just then, with a loud "bang," Ember Vance got out of her car in a huff and started walking towards the Audi A8. She had noticed the A8 behind her and knew that Yusuf Zuck was in the car behind hers.
