Chapter 791: Chapter 790: Dreamland
Yusuf Zuck really missed Ariel Higgins, missed her dearly. He longed to see her again, to see her in that cheongsam, to gaze upon her curvaceous figure, to see the mischievous twinkle in her eyes.
But she was gone, and even with Yusuf’s ability to revive the dead, he ultimately couldn’t bring Ariel back from the Underworld.
Yusuf took out several bottles of strong liquor from his ring and threw one down in front of the tombstone; he also took a long swig from another bottle. The alcohol burned his throat, painfully so, but it helped to dull the sorrow.
Even as tears streamed down his face, he suddenly burst into loud, wild laughter, like a madman, and after the laughter, he felt even more aggrieved as he wiped away his tears.
They say that a true man bleeds but doesn’t cry, yet there was no one else here. What was it to anyone if he cried a bit? So as he drank, he leaned against the tombstone, both crying and laughing, utterly lost in his crazed state!
Yusuf drank all the liquor and spent the whole night embracing the tombstone as he slept.
In his dream, he saw Ariel. She told him she was out of money and kept crying about how aggrieved she felt. She also called him heartless for not visiting her sooner and asked him to burn some paper money for her.
When Yusuf woke up the next morning, he jolted awake. Although he had drunk too much the previous night, the dream felt so real.
There is a folk belief that deceased loved ones will occasionally appear in dreams to ask their living relatives to burn paper offerings and send them money. And last night, he had had such a dream!
Yusuf gave the tombstone an odd look and then strode away.
Three hours later, he returned to the Zuck Family Burial Ground, accompanied by many tricycle carriers from the county, nearly a hundred in number. These were the people who hauled loads on the streets.
All the tricycles were piled high with stacks of joss paper. Unlike in big cities where sending flowers for the deceased was popular, his old hometown still retained the very traditional practice of burning paper money for the dead.
Over a hundred people lined up, piling the joss paper into small mountains until half of the burial ground was covered. Yusuf had nearly cleared out Yanggu County of its joss paper.
After all the paper was piled up, Yusuf then took bundles of hundred-yuan bills from his ring and handed out ten thousand to each worker, sending them down the mountain.
He had money, and he didn’t care about it; as long as Ariel could live lavishly on the other side, he wouldn’t mind emptying Yanggu County of its spirit money or even building a factory to produce it if necessary.
After the tricycle carriers left, Yusuf lit the mountain of joss paper on fire. At the same time, he said, "If there’s any spirit in the heavens, then come to me in a dream, and whatever you want, I will give it to you."
Thick black smoke billowed up, and the intense flames reached for the sky. Yusuf stood motionless in front of the tomb as all the joss paper burned with a hissing sound.
The fire lasted for more than an hour before it ended. Yusuf made sure that any unburnt paper was flipped into the pile.
And after everything was burned, he didn’t leave but continued to sit beside the tombstone, silently looking up at the sky alone.
He wanted to sleep here again, to see if Ariel would come to him in a dream.
As for superstitions, Yusuf believed in them. He was no scientist, nor had he received any higher education. Besides, over the years, he had encountered too many strange phenomena, so he believed in the soul having spirit in darkness.
Night fell quickly, and Yusuf forced himself to sleep.
But the more he tried to sleep, the more awake he became.
Yusuf ran into town again, bought liquor, and even sleeping pills, and when he returned to the grave, he used the liquor as water to down more than ten sleeping pills in one go.
And then he continued trying to sleep...
But somehow, the more desperate he was to sleep, the more alert he became; the sleeping pills seemed to have no effect whatsoever.
Yusuf Zuck knew he was no longer human, yet he desired to sleep! So he went to the county again and bought two bottles of sleeping pills, and also bought alcohol at the pharmacy.
He refused to believe that after drinking alcohol, he wouldn’t be able to get drunk.
After a night of struggle, as dawn was about to break, he finally felt the effects of the medication. He was drowsy and talking nonsense, and while he was mumbling incoherently, he managed to doze off for a bit.
He dreamt again, which was truly astonishing, for he saw Ariel Higgins once more. It is said, ’Daytime thoughts bring nighttime dreams.’ A wondrous event occurred within his dream.
Ariel Higgins cried, telling him to stop thinking of her, notifying him that she would not appear in his dreams anymore because she didn’t want to see him tormenting himself!
The dream was brief; he had said only a few words, and even before Yusuf Zuck had the chance to hold Ariel Higgins in the dream, he woke up.
Upon waking, the sky was faintly lit, and Yusuf Zuck vigorously shook his head and stared blankly at the tombstone, at this grave.
Was it a coincidence, or could there really be a supernatural presence guiding him in his dreams? Otherwise, how could he have dreamt of Ariel Higgins two nights in a row?
Or was it actually a case of daytime thoughts leading to these illusory dreams at night?
There are many interpretations of dreams among the folk, and the scientific community also has its explanations. However, dreams often come with their own signs.
For instance, when Yusuf Zuck used to work for pay, or the day before his salary was due each month, he would certainly dream of catching fish or of floods, which, according to dream interpretation, signified the coming of wealth. Thus, the next day he would invariably come into some fortune.
This had happened to him—it was very precise, and so the true nature of dreams remained undetermined.
He still didn’t leave, even turning off his phone, and spent several nights at Ariel Higgins’ grave site.
During those nights, he forced himself to sleep and did manage to doze off sometimes, but he never dreamt of Ariel Higgins again; he didn’t dream of anything and couldn’t recall anything upon waking up.
On the seventh day, Yusuf Zuck left. Before leaving, he pulled out all the weeds in front of the grave and wiped the tombstone clean with his own clothes.
...
"Does the spirit world really exist?" At West Mountain Villa, Khaza Zuck’s home, Yusuf Zuck went straight to Khaza Zuck’s place after returning to the capital. Khaza Zuck was also cultivating.
As a matter of fact, all of Yusuf Zuck’s friends and relatives were silently studying or cultivating, especially since Yusuf Zuck had provided them with Elixir. They wanted to live a few more years and strengthen their bodies.
Khaza Zuck was pleased with Yusuf Zuck’s visit, but he noticed that Yusuf Zuck’s eyes were dark-circled as if he lacked vitality, and upon meeting, Yusuf Zuck immediately grabbed him and asked if ghosts really existed.
"Yes, I have seen them," Khaza Zuck nodded affirmatively.
"Where do spirits reside? How are they formed? Is there an Underworld?" Yusuf Zuck seemed to be obsessed, fixated on these questions.
"The formation of spirits is most often due to resentment or many coincidences. As for how exactly they are formed, I do not know, nor do I know if an Underworld exists," Khaza Zuck said, sweating profusely; Yusuf was really freaking him out.
"Then tell me about the ghosts you’ve seen before," Yusuf Zuck asked urgently.
"I’ve encountered many, but the one that left the deepest impression on me was a female ghost who was framed and killed in her lifetime. She was born on July 15th of the lunar calendar and died on the Double Ninth Festival, at a location that was an abandoned building with a very strong magnetic field. These coincidences caused her soul to linger after death, turning her into a vengeful spirit," explained Khaza Zuck in a way Yusuf Zuck would understand: "It’s essentially psychic energy. She could create hallucinations and auditory illusions with a magnetic effect, driving a person insane or to suicide; but in reality, she lacks the ability to physically kill someone—she won’t cut you with a knife or strangle you; it’s the illusions that lead you to harm yourself and die!"
"I’ve been at Ariel Higgins’ grave for the past few days, and I dreamt about her for two consecutive nights. She said she was out of money and told me to burn paper offerings for her. The next night, she told me not to think about her anymore, that she wouldn’t see me again. Then, for several days, I never dreamt about her again. What could be the reason for this?" Yusuf Zuck clutched Khaza Zuck’s hand anxiously!
