Chapter 430: Chapter 429: Ember Vance with Amnesia
Mia left. After attending Marlon Shepherd’s wedding, she took a flight back to Hong Kong that very day. She didn’t say goodbye to Yusuf Zuck; she only told Ruth Wilcox about it. So when Yusuf Zuck and Ruth Wilcox came home, Mia was gone, and the house was cold and empty.
Once back home, Ruth Wilcox changed into a comfortable robe and lazily sprawled on the sofa downstairs, covering herself with a blanket, listening to Yusuf Zuck recount the fortune he’d made in the past few months.
Yusuf Zuck only chose the parts he knew Ruth Wilcox could handle, such as gambling in Las Vegas and curing old Master Ye’s illness in Hong Kong, and so on.
What Yusuf Zuck didn’t expect was that, as he recounted his story, Ruth Wilcox fell asleep halfway through.
She was exhausted, having been busy running about these past few days, probably not having had a good night’s sleep at all.
She felt no need to guard herself against Yusuf Zuck because she knew he wouldn’t do anything to her. If he had wanted to, he would have done it already.
Back in Zhonghai, after being drugged by Tyler Nash, Yusuf Zuck had his chance, but he didn’t take advantage of her then.
Later, she had thought about how disheveled she must have been, even her shorts were put on by Yusuf Zuck. She could imagine that her body didn’t have any secrets left from Yusuf Zuck.
But fortunately, Yusuf Zuck was very respectful, he didn’t joke about it, and in his eyes, she always saw purity, a very clean purity.
Actually, she didn’t know what the future with Yusuf Zuck would hold; she just didn’t want to give up easily. It’s like what Yusuf Zuck said, he wanted to keep a tight hold on her, and she also wanted to hold on to him just as tightly, didn’t she?
Once feelings are invested, they’re unstoppable like a flood. She knew she had fallen in, deeper and deeper, but she enjoyed this sensation because it was love, an incurable love.
Yusuf Zuck didn’t touch her; instead, he went upstairs to grab another blanket to cover her, then turned off the main light, leaving only a dim lamp on, and quietly watched her.
In fact, he truly liked her a lot. How to put it, Ruth Wilcox had an aloof charm with a touch of tenderness. Despite her cool exterior, her heart was warm.
And then, he also realized that she essentially lacked a sense of security, always trying to grasp onto something.
When they first started their relationship, when he was her driver, those were the times she cherished most, because they had a strong connection.
How to explain it? It was like they both secretly liked each other but were afraid to confess. During that time, they formed a tacit understanding, and sparks of trust and love ignited.
She trusted him, and he trusted her, no matter what!
That feeling was wonderful and unique, something he hadn’t experienced with any other woman.
Yusuf Zuck was a bold and straightforward man, but during that period, he also didn’t dare to confess his love to her. Later on, he felt that he really had fallen for her, wanting to conquer, possess, and win her over.
The sudden ringtone shattered the night’s silence, startling Ruth Wilcox into opening her eyes.
"I fell asleep," Ruth Wilcox said, sticking out her tongue, while Yusuf Zuck answered the phone.
"Rachel, what’s the matter?" The call was from Rachel Fournier.
"Your little lover has woken up, she just woke up."
"What?" Hearing Rachel Fournier’s words, Yusuf Zuck suddenly stood up.
"But don’t get too happy just yet, seems like she’s having a bit of a... um, problem. Come over," Rachel Fournier said.
"A problem?" Yusuf Zuck was startled and anxiously asked, "What kind of problem?"
"Come over and we’ll talk," Rachel Fournier said and then hung up.
"She woke up?" At that moment, Ruth Wilcox also seemed to let out a sigh of relief, no matter what, a person who had been brain-dead waking up was a miracle.
"Hmm, I’m going to the hospital to take a look," Yusuf Zuck nodded.
"I’ll take you there," Ruth Wilcox stood up, ready to go upstairs to get dressed.
"No need, you keep sleeping, you look very tired. I should be back tonight," Yusuf Zuck declined Ruth Wilcox’s kind offer and picked up the car keys from the tea table before hurrying away.
At the moment, he was actually a bit scared, afraid that Ember Vance had become an idiot or simpleton, because he knew of many cases where people woke up from a vegetative state with the intellect of a small child.
If Ember Vance’s intellect had also regressed to that of a young child, what would he do?
Ruth Wilcox stared blankly at the taillights of the departing car, feeling a sour sensation in her heart.
Soon, Yusuf Zuck arrived at the hospital and saw Rachel Fournier and Sophia outside the hospital corridor. He also saw that the corridor was filled with people, more than twenty, including the Vance Family and colleagues and classmates of Ember Vance who had all come.
"Rachel, Sophia, what’s going on?" Yusuf Zuck didn’t join the crowd but looked at Sophia anxiously.
"Her body and everything seem normal, but she seems to have some memory loss," Sophia stuck out her tongue.
"What do you mean by ’some memory loss’?" Yusuf Zuck was confused.
"Well..." Sophia pondered and said, "She recognizes her parents, relatives, and classmates, but she didn’t recognize a few colleagues, and when her father mentioned you, she even asked who Yusuf Zuck is!"
"Uh..." Yusuf Zuck was totally bewildered and stood there stupefied, unsure of what to do.
"But you don’t need to be nervous. It could be temporary or intermittent, and she might remember everything in a few days," Sophia consoled.
"Where are memories stored?" Rachel Fournier suddenly asked.
"We, the Miaos, believe that memories are stored deep in the soul, but modern medicine believes they are in the neurons of the brain. Maybe she’s lost a few neurons, and with them, a small segment of memory!"
"I’m going to see her." Yusuf Zuck strode towards Ember Vance’s hospital room, with Rachel Fournier and Sophia quickly following him.
In the hospital room, many members of the Vance Family were crowded inside, some crying and some laughing.
Ember Vance hadn’t become foolish; she just lost some memory. She still recognized her classmates and her family, which was a great relief to most of the Vance Family.
When Yusuf Zuck entered the room, everyone turned to look at him, and Ember Vance’s parents, who had been smiling, suddenly looked uncomfortable.
"Xiao Yun, do you remember him?" Ember Vance’s father had the best impression of Yusuf Zuck, because without him, Ember Vance wouldn’t have awakened. It was Yusuf Zuck who had searched high and low for renowned doctors to cure his daughter.
"Are you also my colleague?" Ember Vance curiously examined Yusuf Zuck from head to toe, eyes pure and filled with confusion.
Yusuf Zuck’s heart clenched, for in Ember Vance’s eyes, he saw only unfamiliarity; the tenderness and passion that used to be there were gone.
"Xiao Yun, you don’t remember me?" Yusuf Zuck approached the bedside and asked hoarsely.
"I’m sorry. The doctor said I seem to have lost several years of memory. I have no recollection from when I started working. I’m truly sorry. Were you a colleague or a friend of mine from before? I can’t remember," Ember Vance said apologetically, furiously ruffling her hair. Her memory had halted several years ago, and after the doctor’s explanation, she knew she had lost a lot in her life!
"I..." Yusuf Zuck opened his mouth, unsure where to begin or what to say to her.
"Xiao Zhang, you should go and rest for now. Xiao Yun might recover in a couple of days. At this point, it’s not good to stress her out too much!" Ember Vance’s mother looked at Yusuf Zuck guiltily.
