Chapter 385: Chapter 384: The Three Major Schools Attack
Yusuf Zuck and Louise Garrett met Russ Trujillo and Felicity O’brien outside of the Guolin Family Restaurant. Louise had wanted to make the introduction, but when Russ greeted her with a jesting "brother-in-law," she was instantly befuddled.
Yusuf Zuck and her as-yet-unmet brother-in-law were acquainted?
"No need for introductions, we’ve met before. Hello, little sister," Yusuf Zuck said, reaching out his hand.
Felicity had a mission, and she didn’t want to make her sister uncomfortable, so she reluctantly shook Yusuf’s hand. Her expression was neither cold nor warm, not chilly but not enthusiastic either, and she didn’t call him brother-in-law or speak a word.
Louise then began to feel that something was off. She knew her sister well; she had still been calling him brother-in-law over the phone before, so why the silence upon meeting?
"Shall we go upstairs? Hey, Russ, your family is from Beijing too?" Yusuf asked with genuine curiosity.
"No, my family’s from Guangdong, la~" Russ replied in Cantonese.
"Oh." Yusuf Zuck glanced at Louise Garrett; she had told him in the car that her brother-in-law was from Beijing too.
Louise looked at Felicity, who had told her the same thing.
"Russ bought a house in Beijing, so he’ll be settling down there in the future," Felicity explained.
"Oh," Louise nodded, and then the four of them entered the restaurant together.
The servers at the restaurant were very welcoming, as Yusuf and Louise were regulars who often dined there.
"Yusuf, how do you guys know each other?" Once they were seated, Louise asked, perplexed as to how her sister and brother-in-law could possibly know Yusuf.
Felicity interrupted right away and shot Yusuf a warning look, "Russ’s family knows him, so that’s how we met."
"Right, this sword I carry was a gift from Russ’s elder ancestor," Yusuf said, now carrying the Short Sword with him everywhere since leaving it in the car was unsafe, with many people eyeing his Unrivalled Divine Weapon.
Louise was aware that Yusuf always had a sword with him, so her sister’s explanation made her smile, "What a coincidence, huh?"
"Yeah, your brother-in-law and I are totally bosom buddies. Let’s drink a bit today, shall we, brother-in-law?" Russ chuckled cheerfully.
"We should definitely drink to celebrate!" Yusuf beamed. The two were comrades-in-arms, both safely back in their home country; it was indeed an occasion for a drink.
Louise and her sister sat together, chatting quietly, asking about their parents, home, and what kind of person Russ was.
Meanwhile, Yusuf and Russ began drinking, sticking to Baijiu since Louise would be driving later.
After three rounds of drinks, when Felicity felt the time was right, she suggested going to the restroom with Louise to have a private conversation, and Louise readily agreed; the sisters indeed had some things to discuss quietly.
As soon as the women left, Russ immediately said with a smile, "Brother-in-law, please don’t be mad at Felicity, alright? She’s just like that, but she doesn’t have a bad heart."
"I know that. Say what you need to say; I’m all ears," Yusuf prompted, lifting his drink.
"Two things," Russ said, not beating around the bush and raising two fingers, "First, our deputy team leader has given a strict order to bring you to him, even if it means dragging you. If we can’t, we’ll be disciplined. You need to understand, after being disciplined, there’ll be consequences for everything from evaluations to bonuses to promotions. So brother-in-law, we’re family by marriage. You’ve got to help me!"
"And the second matter?" Yusuf inquired, sipping his drink.
"The second is a bit more serious," Russ said gravely, "We’ve received reliable intel that over two hundred people from three Japanese Ninja sects have entered the country in groups. Some have gone to the Northeast, some to the South, and some have come to Beijing."
"This time they’ve sent the top masters from the three sects, so you’ve drawn the wolves to our doorstep!"
"What’s this ’three major schools’ thing?" Yusuf Zuck didn’t know anything about these schools; he was purely an outsider to that world, completely clueless.
"The three major Japanese schools are a collective term, including Sword Dao, Ninja Tactics, and Divine Way. Sword Dao is about swordsmanship, using katanas or competitive swords as weapons. Ninja tactics refer to ninjas, who are categorized as low, mid, and high ninja, with the highest being ninth dan, and they also use katanas."
"Divine Way is Japan’s most mysterious school. They practice both Sword Dao and Ninja Tactics, plus some peculiar spells, and theories about gods and spirits," the explanation continued.
"Was it me who drew the wolves in?" Yusuf Zuck asked calmly, not believing that there was no one in the Chinese party capable of dealing with these bastards.
"Yes, you’ve broken the post-war rules, which are..."
"I don’t want to hear it." Yusuf Zuck shook his head. "I’m not part of your circle, so none of your rules, principles, or laws apply to me. My killing of the Japanese is personal."
"I know that, but the Japanese are using it as an excuse to come here," the other person said. "Even if you’re not part of our circle, you are still Chinese, right? To give you an analogy, if they wanted to cause destruction here, using it as an excuse to kill and arson, repeating their past actions, would you care about that?"
"Of course, they might not kill civilians, but it’s a provocation against us Chinese, right? Now that you have the ability to help, will you help? If you say no, I’ll leave immediately, and you can pay up!"
"Heh." Yusuf Zuck chuckled. It seemed Russ Trujillo had finally probed his bottom line and even pressed him with national righteousness. And faced with such a situation, he really couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.
Because... because... he was Chinese!
"Help me analyze this, why does your deputy leader want to meet with me?" Yusuf Zuck asked after a moment’s thought.
"There are two possibilities," Russ Trujillo replied promptly. "First, to win you over. If that fails, they’ll still want you to contribute, at least to deal with the current crisis. They won’t be accusing you of any crimes."
"Why not?" Yusuf Zuck inquired with curiosity.
"For one simple reason, you love this country," Russ Trujillo said, giving a thumbs-up.
"Alright, I’ll meet with your leader, but not until after 10 p.m. tonight at the earliest. I’ve got a lot going on tonight, otherwise, it’ll be tomorrow!"
"After 10 p.m. works, I’ll wait for your call, but please don’t stand me up, you’re my brother-in-law after all."
"But brother-in-law, you really are impressive," Russ Trujillo added another comment.
"Impressive in what way?" Yusuf Zuck looked at him and asked.
"In the pot, in the bowl, in the spoon, you’ve got them all. I’m pretty sure my sister Louise knows, right? That’s why you’re impressive, a truly great man, just like my family’s old master!"
"What? Your family’s old master?" Yusuf Zuck was instantly confused.
"I have several great-grandmothers. My grandfathers were born to several mothers..." Russ Trujillo trailed off.
"Cough, cough, let’s move on to the next topic, stop there," Yusuf Zuck coughed twice. His old master lived in feudal times. Hong Kong seemed to have abolished the practice of having multiple wives only in the sixties or seventies, and even then, those who had taken more than two wives were still protected by law.
"Where is your old master now? Can I meet him?" Yusuf Zuck suddenly wished to meet the old Mr. Trujillo who had given him the Short Sword. Rachel Fournier also wanted to find him, so meeting him would be both a way to express gratitude and a favor for Rachel Fournier.
"I’d like to see him too, but I have no idea where he is. He’s been traveling around with my Uncle Nine, and I only saw him briefly not long ago before losing track of him again."
"Hmm, what level is your family’s old master?" Yusuf Zuck asked with curiosity.
