Chapter 319: Chapter 319: Ember Vance Assassination Attempt

New Year’s Eve that evening, Yusuf Zuck and Ruth Wilcox each cooked up four dishes, making a total of eight dishes, and then placed many bottles of red wine on the table.

The two had been apart for more than two months, and it seemed like they had endless conversations. Eventually, Ruth drank too much and collapsed on the table.

Yusuf gently picked her up and carried her back to her room.

He did not cross the final line of male-female relations because he would not touch her without her formal consent.

Around midnight, after taking a shower, Yusuf went back to his room to sleep but found himself unable to do so for some reason. Too many things had happened in recent days, and he hadn’t had time to process them. He also felt an inexplicable restlessness.

Unable to sleep, Yusuf got out of bed, careful not to make too much noise, and sat on the sofa alone, boredly watching television.

Strangely enough, he was watching a Korean drama, and as he watched, the slow plot eventually lulled him to sleep.

He slept soundly until dawn, when he awoke to find something tickling his ear.

Ruth was teasing his ear with a strand of hair, a mischievous smile spread across her face.

"Ah, it’s already daylight, how can you be so naughty..." Yusuf instinctively pulled her into his embrace, and like a little kitten, she curled up in his arms, murmuring for him to stop fooling around.

Yusuf tickled her a couple of times, but he didn’t dare kiss her, as the taste of last night’s alcohol and cigarettes still lingered in his mouth, so he refrained from forcing a kiss on her.

"Ruth..." Yusuf held her like that, not letting go, and softly called out to her.

"Mmm." Ruth softly hummed in response.

"Under what conditions would you marry me?" Yusuf suddenly brought up the topic of marriage.

"This... well, when you become president, I’ll be the First Lady then, hee hee hee..." She laughed as she wriggled out of Yusuf’s embrace and ran into the kitchen.

Yusuf couldn’t help but feel frustrated by Ruth’s lofty requirement.

But on the subject of marriage, he had no real plans, nor did he wish to marry so soon.

Just then, the phone sitting on the tea machine suddenly rang. The caller ID showed it was Samuel Ross.

It was only six-thirty in the morning, not even seven, and Yusuf wondered what Samuel could want by calling so early.

"Boss, something’s happened." As soon as the call connected, Samuel’s voice came through, filled with extreme panic, "Ember... Ember... Director Ember has had an accident. She was attacked last night on her way, it seems like... it seems like she’s dead..." Samuel didn’t dare to continue.

"What?" Hearing Samuel’s words, Yusuf instantly felt dizzy, his brain turning blank, and it took him a while to recover.

"Say that again!" Maybe a second passed, or perhaps several minutes, but Yusuf leapt up, his voice filled with extreme anger and menace, startling Ruth in the kitchen.

"I... I had arranged with Grey to meet Director Ember this morning for breakfast, you know, since you asked her to help us with the passports yesterday? But she didn’t have time yesterday afternoon, so we planned to meet this morning. She had asked me to take her out for breakfast in the morning and then bring us both to the place where we process the passports, to ask her colleagues for some favors... But when I called her this morning, another police officer answered the phone. They asked who I was, and that’s how I found out she had been stabbed last night, not far from her police station."

"Where is she now, where?" Yusuf urgently asked.

"Union Hospital," Samuel quietly replied.

"I’m on my way immediately." Yusuf hung up and dashed outside, not even considering Ruth.

Ruth also ran out following him.

"Ruth, I’m sorry, a friend of mine is in trouble, in the hospital. I must go right away, you’ll have to drive yourself to work. I’ll contact you by phone later!" After a quick word with Ruth, Yusuf hurried to his car and drove off.

"Drive slowly... don’t rush..." Ruth called out to the pickup truck.

But Yusuf, as if he hadn’t heard her, sped away in his vehicle.

Once he left the villa complex, Yusuf gradually calmed down. He then picked up his phone and called Fleur Carson: "Are you keeping an eye on Lucy Clayton?"

"Yes, under surveillance," Fleur answered.

"Keep a close eye on him, and if he tries to leave Beijing or go abroad, stop him."

"Understood," Fleur Carson responded.

"Huff~" Yusuf Zuck let out a deep sigh. How did Ember Vance get assassinated, who wanted to kill her?

Yusuf’s heart was trembling, Samuel Ross said she was dead, dead!

Yusuf was practically going insane, racing towards Concord Hospital.

By the time he arrived at the hospital, Samuel Ross and Grey Petty were already waiting for him in the parking lot.

"Boss, don’t panic, don’t panic. We don’t know the specifics yet, maybe she’s alright. Don’t rush, she’s on the twelfth floor," Samuel Ross said as he followed Yusuf inside, trying to calm him down.

Yusuf was in a hurry, his eyes already red with urgency.

The elevator was crowded, so he chose to forgo it and ran up the stairs instead.

As he reached the twelfth floor, many police officers were present, and a few were from Garden Road, familiar to both Yusuf and Samuel.

"Where is she, where is Ember Vance?" Yusuf barged toward the intensive care unit without any hesitation!

"Who are you, stop right there." A bunch of police officers stopped Yusuf, and two even twisted his arms behind his back.

"Mia, Mia..." At that moment, Yusuf also saw Oakley Vance in one of the wards, her head wrapped in white bandages, lying there quietly, with several doctors busy around her and a few family members inside.

"What’s going on here?" At that moment, a man in casual clothes with bloodshot eyes walked out of the ward – clearly a leader.

"This man was trying to force his way into the ward," the police replied.

"Who are you?" the man asked.

"My name is Yusuf Zuck, I’m Ember Vance’s boyfriend!"

"Boyfriend?" The man paused, since Ember having a boyfriend was unknown to everyone.

"Vice Minister Vance, Ember once mentioned to me that Yusuf Zuck is her boyfriend," intervened the chief of the local police, standing up from a chair in the corridor.

"Ember is gone. Thank you for coming to see her," said the man, choking up with tears streaming from his eyes.

"What?" Yusuf’s legs went weak, and he nearly fell, fortunately caught by Samuel Ross and Grey Petty.

At the same time, he shook his head insistently, "Impossible, impossible, how could Mia die? It can’t be, you’re lying to me, right? I just saw her receiving IVs, and doctors were treating her, how could she possibly be dead? It can’t be." Yusuf was completely dazed; Ember Vance was his woman, how could she die? He hadn’t allowed her to die, how dare she die?

"Yusuf, calm down, please accept my condolences, Mia is brain dead," the chief said as he walked up to Yusuf, gently patting his shoulder.

"Brain dead? What is brain dead, can someone tell me what brain death means?" Yusuf yelled out loud.

"Big brother Yusuf..." A group of people rushed from the elevator, including Miles O’Brien, Paisley Kirk, and Uriel Arellano, who had also been in contact with Ember, and Samuel had called them earlier.

Paisley Kirk, who was in the medical field, held onto Yusuf, crying, "Big brother Yusuf, brain death is a state of deep coma with no response to stimuli; spontaneous respiration ceases; brainstem reflexes are entirely absent; the electroencephalogram (EEG) shows no activity, but the heart can still be beating, so medically, they declare brain death."

With a "puh~" sound, Yusuf felt a tightness in his chest, and blood spurted from his mouth.

"Ah... Yusuf..."

"Quick, get a doctor..."

The police in the hallway, who had witnessed this man claiming to be Ember Vance’s boyfriend vomiting blood upon hearing the tragic news, couldn’t help but be moved, and they all called for a doctor in panic.
