Chapter 794: Chapter 790: Return to Post
Returning to his own dorm, Ye Fan lay down on the bed and soon fell asleep.
He had not used Xu Xiangli’s sheets. With his physical conditioning, not to mention he didn’t need to cover himself with a quilt in summer, even in winter he wouldn’t feel cold without it.
The next day, Ye Fan woke up, had breakfast, and first went to his office.
The office was okay, after all, it was not a living space; he had closed the doors and windows when he left, so besides the stale air, there was nothing a bit of window-opening wouldn’t fix.
Just after nine o’clock, Ye Fan went to Zhao Lina’s office to officially report in.
Zhao Lina was wearing her police uniform and, as usual, seemed more aloof when she was wearing it. She was sitting at her desk, dealing with documents. However, Ye Fan noticed a hint of rosiness in Lina’s complexion.
“Sit on the sofa and wait for a bit, I need to finish this document,” she said quickly.
Ye Fan responded with an “Okay,” turned to sit on the sofa, and started to make tea by himself.
Being away for a few months and returning to work, it would probably take a day or two to hand over things.
By the time Ye Fan was leisurely sipping his third cup of tea, Zhao Lina finally left her desk, walked to the sofa in front of the coffee table with a stack of documents, and set them down on the table.
“These past few months must have been tough, right?” Ye Fan poured a cup of tea for Zhao Lina and asked with concern.
She had been managing the entire police department and especially since she had taken on the role of the county’s Political and Legal Committee Secretary and became a standing committee member of the county, she must have been extremely busy.
Zhao Lina showed a slight smile and said, “It’s been alright. I’ve managed to hold up. Now that you’re back, in addition to continuing your previous work, you’ll also need to help me with some of it.”
“No problem,” Ye Fan nodded in agreement.
Before going on a mission to Africa, he had considered transferring out of the police department, but now that he had been away for several months and had just returned, even if he wanted to transfer, it wouldn’t be possible for at least a year. Additionally, since Zhao Lina had changed her attitude, there was temporarily no need to transfer. So, he needed to buckle down and get the police department’s work done seriously.
“The work documents for the Public Security Brigade, the Anti-Riot Brigade, and the Discipline Inspection Department are all here,” Zhao Lina pointed to the stack that was at least twenty centimeters thick, “Take them back with you to review. If you have any questions, come and ask me.”
Ye Fan nodded his head.
“While you were away, these three departments have been operating normally, without any issues,” Zhao Lina said. “However…”
She paused and then said directly, “There’s some instability in personnel within the Public Security Brigade. Xu Xiangli and Wang Xianzhong had conflicts, and Wang Xianzhong has come to me privately two or three times to complain, probably because he doesn’t accept Xu Xiangli. Keep an eye on Wang Xianzhong.”
Their real relationship allowed her to speak without having to be overly cautious, expressing herself directly.
Moreover, when she took over the three departments Ye Fan was in charge of, she was intentionally strict, even somewhat harsh.
Her reasons were simple: first, to ensure that these departments didn’t make any mistakes, and second, to make it easier for Ye Fan to take over again when he returned. She had played the role of the ‘bad cop’ in those departments, so when Ye Fan came back to play the ‘good cop,’ people in those departments naturally continued to side with Ye Fan.
“Mhm,” Ye Fan nodded in response.
Wang Xianzhong was the first deputy head of the Public Security Brigade. Although his authority had already been significantly reduced by Ye Fan compared to his predecessor Chen Kunfei, Xu Xiangli was much less experienced than him, and being a woman, Wang Xianzhong’s ambition to overthrow Xu Xiangli became uncontrollable without Ye Fan around.
“After you take over the Public Security, Anti-Riot, and Discipline Inspection departments again, I’ll hand over the Economic Crime Investigation Brigade, Criminal Investigation Brigade, Narcotics Brigade, Traffic Police Brigade, and the Detention Center to you to manage,” Zhao Lina continued.
The five departments Zhao Lina planned to hand over to Ye Fan were all critical departments, and together with the three key departments he already managed, Ye Fan would almost be in control of the entire Mingde County Police Department.
However, Ye Fan just calmly nodded his head, seemingly unconcerned.
After discussing work for another seven or eight minutes, Ye Fan picked up the stack of documents and left Zhao Lina’s office to go back to his own, sinking his heart into reviewing these documents and getting back to work.
At ten o’clock, Xu Xiangli knocked on the door to come in and said she wanted to report on her work.
Ye Fan said, “There’s no rush today. Report to me tomorrow morning. By the way, prepare a summary report of the work from the past few months for me.”
“Of course, leader,” Xu Xiangli said.
“If there’s nothing else, you can go back to your work,” Ye Fan added.
Xu Xiangli responded and, before leaving, asked with concern, “Leader, did you sleep well last night?”
“It was okay. Thanks for the quilt,” Ye Fan nodded.
Xu Xiangli smiled happily and said, “It’s my duty.”
Then she left Ye Fan’s office with a spring in her step.
When Ye Fan returned, nearly everyone in his departments knew by around eleven o’clock, and related people came one after another to greet him.
When Wang Xianzhong learned of Ye Fan’s return, he was upset.
He thought that since Ye Fan had been gone for so long, he wouldn’t return, or he might be back to handle his resignation or transfer.
“What should I do? What should I do?” Wang Xianzhong sat in his office chair, scared and unwilling, muttering to himself.
He really wasn’t willing to give up. In his heart, Xu Xiangli’s position was rightfully his. It was only because he made a mistake—he did not personally assist Ye Fan in capturing a suspect at Mingde High School.
And he feared Ye Fan’s possible retaliation. He had personally witnessed how Ye Fan had effortlessly dealt with Chen Kunfei, who had opposed Ye Fan, who was now still in jail.
After muttering to himself for a while, Wang Xianzhong wasn’t content to just sit still; he quickly took out his phone, scrolled to a number, and made a call.
The phone rang a few times before connecting, and Wang Xianzhong said, “Miao Jian, where are you? I need to talk to you about something.”
“I’m out and about,” Miao Jian said on the other line, “What’s the matter?”
He did not yet know that Ye Fan had returned. Wang Xianzhong was among the earlier ones to know about Ye Fan’s return to work.
“It’s very urgent and important. We need to talk right now,” Wang Xianzhong said, “Where are you? I’ll drive over immediately.”
After Miao Jian gave an address, Wang Xianzhong hung up the phone, rushed out of the office, and drove to find Miao Jian.
There were three deputy heads of the Public Security Brigade besides Wang Xianzhong and Miao Jian. Another deputy head had been personally promoted by Xu Xiangli. Naturally, that deputy was on the same page with Xu Xiangli and did not participate in the infighting.
The county town wasn’t large, and Wang Xianzhong quickly found Miao Jian and pulled him to a secluded place to talk.
“Chief Ye has returned,” Wang Xianzhong said with a grave tone.
