Chapter 68: Mara’s Record

It turns out that Naylah didn’t just leave to stay away from the pain and shame of her husband’s destroyed reputation. Perhaps she might have had that as a prior aim, but fate seemed to have had other plans.

She got married.

Well, although Kurtis didn’t look that interested in knowing more about it. He didn’t even ask her further after she stated that she already had three kids.

It was something that left him amazed, if not stunned, but he knew she was human.

Humans do the unbelievable sometimes...

They entered the Supreme High Court together with Luka, Silas, and some other figures, including the lawyer they had already hired.

Miranda Hart, a well-known attorney in the city, was known to have crippled some strong figures, rising as one of the most reliable lawyers around.

Kurtis had introduced her to the group himself, and Silas never had second thoughts since he had already heard news about her.

That way, it proceeded until now it was time for the show.

This was a chance to take down the Kingsleys, a chance that could easily slip away if they didn’t go hard, because it was clear that the Kingsleys, as always, would be ready for whatever they brought forward.

They still retained the same lawyer as the first case... Thomas Cristin.

After some remarkable victories with his clients, he was clearly one of the best in the state. The Kingsleys couldn’t afford not to bring him on this time.

The courtroom was full within a moment, as the crowd chose sides. There was a noticeable difference between the sides. The supporters of the Vanes and the Coles were much larger than the Kingsleys’.

Even Gregory noticed this and gave a bitter look, but that did nothing to his courage.

As the biggest figure in Cloudbridge City, he feared no one—not even the combined forces of Mrs. Naylah and the Vanes made him flinch.

He might have been upset that the Vanes decided to join his enemies to fight him, but that never stirred any fear.

All he wanted to see in the end was the Vanes losing and then crashing further, because he was going to do more than he had initially intended with the Grand Development Project.

"I’ll make sure the Vanes crawl beneath my feet!"

...

The judge stepped in shortly.

Now it was a new judge in the Supreme High Court. He was young, unlike the previous one that handled the first case. Many believed that the previous judge had sided with the Kingsleys and that’s why Emerson was easily sentenced.

But those accusations died with time since there was no proof to show for it.

Now it was a new judge.

Everyone, especially Naylah, hoped that he’d be a fair person. The Kingsleys were crazily unfair people who could promise millions to a judge to win their favor.

She was aware of what Gregory could do, and she didn’t hope those possibilities would happen.

"Court!"

They rose up, as a typical in-court practice, before they finally began.

Thomas Cristin was the first to come forward after the judge made an official announcement of the case.

"It’s officially the second time we are bringing the case, but this time, it will be regarded as more of an accusation than an actual case.

If the accused aren’t found guilty, the plaintiffs will be charged ten million dollars or, rather, accept a two-week house arrest."

The courtroom gasped, as many turned heads. It was a clear fact that this was no simple feat, but fear should be in the one afraid of losing, right?

Thomas began. "Mrs. Naylah Cole. I urge you to come forward."

Naylah heaved a sigh and went forward, her eyes sharp with seriousness and faint boldness.

She settled at the stand, and then Thomas began his questioning.

"This case was quenched long ago. Why did you bring it back up after fourteen good years?" he asked.

"Because my husband still needs justice. I got more proofs, and I wasn’t the only one who is against the embezzlement accusation on my late husband," she said before the court, her tone bold.

"My husband was never a criminal. He would never do such a thing as what he had been accused of. Like I said in this same court fourteen years ago, my husband was blasphemed!"

Another round of murmurs sounded, but was swiftly silenced.

Thomas gave a nod and turned to the judge.

"My lord, this case had long been forgotten, and we almost completely proved her husband guilty in this very court on that day. My client here had every proof shown. It was all recorded in the Judgement Book."

The judge nodded, ordering an officer to bring the huge book forward. He spent about ten minutes on the Emerson Cole case and then gave a headshake.

"You are right. It was almost confirmed that he was guilty, but it wasn’t entirely confirmed. They were to have another clear proof to round it off, but then the former judge sentenced him without the case being rightfully and officially closed."

Gasps rose, as the people widened their eyes.

Kurtis and Silas could be spotted smiling in their seats, and Naylah was deeply relieved of her nervousness and doubts.

The judge closed the book and turned to Naylah.

"Can we start with the plaintiffs bringing their proofs?"

Naylah nodded with a complex expression, turning toward Kurtis.

Kurtis turned to a lady at the back, who quickly stood up and approached the stand while Naylah walked back.

Gregory and some of his old subordinates noticed her at once... It was a familiar face, one that was easily recognized.

It didn’t take long before Gregory cracked his memories, remembering who it was.

"Mara?" he muttered.

It was his secretary back then...

She left the company two years after the Emerson Cole case, after getting married and having to travel to another state with her husband.

Now she was here?

Taking sides with the people trying to bring her former boss down?

Gregory was quite sure that she wasn’t part of the people that joined his plans for the blasphemy, so he was deeply stunned why she was here to even attempt a proof.

He started to suspect that Silas had bribed her, because there was probably no other way she would be doing that.

"I’m Mara Edlin. Here to testify in favor of the plaintiffs," she began, striking a glance at Thomas.

Thomas himself was slightly surprised, but he didn’t go straight to attacking her. That was not his job in the first place.

"Miss Mara, what can you offer as proof to show this honorable court that Emerson Cole was innocent of his accusations?" he asked.

"I... I..." she said, her voice breaking, noticeably nervous as she gave Gregory a stare.

She noticed his glare and quickly turned away... that feeling of betrayal—but she had to do this because Gregory had indeed started the betrayal.

Emerson was his most diligent worker. He is a monster for betraying him, she told herself before gathering enough courage to continue.

"Before the accusation came up, I overheard Mr. Gregory and some of his top subordinates discussing in his office. I was his secretary, but that day, he told me to go home, just like almost every worker on the same floor as his office.

I came back to grab my engagement ring I forgot—which I had pulled off while I was at work—and unbelievably heard their conversation."

The audience was getting more stunned as she spoke, but they were urged to maintain absolute silence.

"Just saying that isn’t proof enough, Miss Mara. Do you have something to strengthen your accusations?" Thomas asked.

"Yes. I recorded everything," she said confidently, which left Gregory completely astonished the moment he heard that.

"Okay... Bring it on." Thomas’s face was turning dark, but he continued.

Mara went on to fetch her phone, and the judge ordered her to bring it forward to him.

There was a speaker positioned somewhere on the table, and the judge asked her to play it for the crowd to listen. It was an audio recording...

The recording began...

It started with the part where Gregory urged the men to be professionally ready for any questioning, since they had joined him in the plans of blaspheming Emerson.

They also talked about how they could set him up with the current funding project ongoing, because he was the Financial Manager of the company. This was actually a case of Gregory being the one to steal the funds, and he was clearly heard promising the conspirators two million each.

Those parts were shocking, but it was quite believable since it really sounded like Gregory’s voice.

The defendants were awed.

The air got thick.

While it still continued, they finally got to a point with the most shocking statement.

"If he plays hard to break, we’ll find a way to end his life. You should leave that to me. For now, let’s get on with the early plans."

"Whoa..."

"Did he really say that?"

"Oh my...! What a shame!"

The judge raised a hand, and the crowd fell silent.

"Are you really sure about this, Miss Mara?" he then asked.

Mara nodded. "Yes, my lord."

The judge nodded and stared at Thomas, then at Gregory.

"Then I hereby switch the accusation charges from Emerson Cole to Gregory Kingsley. Next court meeting in five days. If Gregory is further proven guilty of these charges, he will be sentenced to life imprisonment!"
