Chapter 55: A Marksman Arrow II.
Ryuen strode behind Yurei with his hands in his coat pockets.
He had received his uniform, and luckily, his was a black tailored coat.
It had a high collar and was belted at the lower abdomen.
The coat opened at the bottom, revealing his trousers and boots.
It was an exact copy of his old suit—the same fabric, the same style, and the same familiar feeling it gave him.
The dungeon gate was located in an abandoned part of the city, surrounded by remnants of old buildings covered in vines.
A reminder that a dungeon had opened there, a war had been fought, and the place had been rendered uninhabitable.
It was a giant rectangular mirror... or in this case, a glass, reflecting the world behind it.
It pulsed with a blue glow, its jagged design resembling cracks in reality itself.
The longer one stared at it, the more it seemed to stretch inward.
The area around the gate trembled faintly, emitting a low hum that sent chills down Ryuen’s spine.
It was as if the land rejected them the moment they arrived.
In fact, it rejected everything.
And that was strange—because Ryuen had entered this dungeon before.
Yet, he had never seen anything like this.
There was a chance the dungeon had grown stronger.
A system panel opened above the gate, visible to both Ryuen and Yurei.
[Class A Dungeon: Proceed with Caution]
Daiki stood near the gate, waiting for them.
He was leaning against a boulder with his arms crossed.
His relaxed posture made it seem as if he wasn’t about to enter one of the most dangerous dungeons recorded.
"You’re finally here," Daiki said with a smile. "You look good."
"Thanks. Now, can we get this over with?" Ryuen muttered, adjusting the bag on his shoulder.
As the three of them stepped through the portal, a rush of cold air hit them.
The scenery changed instantly. The sky was dark, and the temperature dropped.
They were now standing inside the Redspire Dungeon.
But where exactly?
The landscape was in ruins—rocky cliffs and winding paths stretched deep into the dungeon.
Yet, none of them were particularly tense.
Daiki, because this wasn’t his first time in a dungeon like this, and he feared no beast.
Yurei, because the darkness worked in her favor, and she was a class higher than the dungeon.
Ryuen, because he had been here before.
For him, it was normal.
In fact, all members of the organization—both Vanguard and her sister faction—had been using dungeons as shortcuts for transportation.
Ryuen took a deep breath.
The energy of the place seemed to press on him.
Or maybe... he was just hungry.
He had only eaten an apple before leaving the apartment, and that wasn’t nearly enough for him.
Deciding now was as good a time as any, he turned to Daiki and asked something that had been on his mind—something related to what Yurei and the queen had told him.
"Daiki," Ryuen began as they walked deeper into the dungeon.
"How did you find your way out of the dungeon you got lost in?"
"Hm?" Daiki glanced at Ryuen, then shrugged. "It’s nothing, actually. Kinda a long story."
"But if you want the short version... I survived because I adapted. The dungeon was just like this one, so avoiding a few beasts was actually easy."
"But I did make a mistake—I killed something I shouldn’t have," Daiki said with a chuckle.
Ryuen’s brow rose. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, out of desperation, I killed the king of one of the dungeons."
"And when it collapsed, that pissed off the other beasts."
"So basically, I’m wanted."
"Wait, what?!"
Daiki laughed off Ryuen’s question and continued.
"Beast meat is actually delicious, and their blood is like wine."
He paused to chuckle, oblivious to the disgust on Ryuen’s face.
"They might be dangerous, but trust me, they’re delicious."
"Kaori brought some yesterday. Too bad you were too exhausted to eat."
Ryuen lowered his head, slightly upset.
He hadn’t eaten yesterday, and now Daiki had to tell him they had delicious food the night before.
’Just great.’
He exhaled. "So what happened with your army and the Northern Queen?"
Daiki’s gaze slowly moved to Yurei, who also turned to look at him. They exchanged glances, and he sighed.
"Okay, I’m starting to think you two spent more time together."
Daiki responded with a nervous laugh. "Well... we actually did. We attended the same college, sooo..."
Ryuen sighed. "Just give me answers."
"Well, I was actually involved with the Queen’s daughter. And, well, as a human, she was a temptation."
"She called me to her, and we did a lot together—until the man she was supposed to marry found us."
"Apparently, we weren’t remorseful, and, well, her mother made me go on a raid alone, and I got lost there."
"As for the army, they were and are traitors. I intend to pay them a visit soon, though."
Daiki’s jaw clenched slightly before he let out a breath.
"They abandoned me when I needed them the most. That was reason enough to leave... and take others with me."
Ryuen nodded. He wouldn’t press further.
Betrayal from those you trust hurts more than betrayal from someone you don’t.
At least he got his answers. It was best to leave the past alone.
But he could imagine Daiki’s situation. He might have spent years with his army, only for them to betray him like it was nothing.
Then there was the woman he had been involved with. If Ryuen had to guess, Daiki had actually been in love with her. But because she was betrothed, he had to let her go.
Well, it wasn’t new to him. His case was different.
They wanted him.
He needed to get his mind off work and relax.
Apparently, most of Kaori... Yumi’s teachers had offered themselves.
He was always visiting her school, and they found him attractive.
At least they were either a year older than him, his age, or a year younger.
But nevertheless, most of the female teachers in her school were very young, and he had taken the risk.
He laughed at the memory of the last girl.
She had almost died after he told her his job but stayed because she was obsessed and had feelings for him.
They had indulged many times.
She was a thick beauty—the kind he liked. Polite. A good girlfriend.
That was if he considered her one.
And at the time, he had been looking for entertainment—a way to relax after work.
Unfortunately, he had ended things with her the night he killed her father.
And that was the day he messed up.
The day he increased his kill count.
Which wasn’t supposed to happen.
If he was given a chance, he would actually go to her and apologize.
Stay for a while, talk, maybe even help her with her self-confidence.
Ryuen chuckled silently and exhaled.
"Good old days."
