Chapter 52: Joining A Guild VI

Ryuen chuckled softly, shaking his head.

He took a step back to increase the distance between himself and her, then he smiled.

"Persistent, aren’t you?"

"You’re avoiding the question."

He sighed, shoving his hands back into his pockets. "I’m human."

"Or you don’t know what you are?"

She didn’t look convinced—if anything, she thought otherwise.

"You’re too fast, even in complete darkness."

"That’s not something a person who just arrived a few days ago can do... not without enhancements or years of specialized training."

"I was training since seventeen, and I’m twenty-two, so..."

"That’s assassin-class training. You have the build, the mind, but the rest is far beyond that."

"You’re either a Versatile Assassin or a Mage... and I doubt that’s it."

Ryuen sighed, visibly exhausted. "I only came here to clarify a few things. Now I’m being interrogated."

"Do you want to exact your revenge or not?"

"I do."

"Now tell me, what exactly changed?"

Ryuen considered his response carefully.

She wasn’t wrong. His abilities weren’t normal, and he knew that better than anyone.

Especially with the system, his being alive, and the changes after the upgrade.

But telling her the full truth? That wasn’t an option.

"I’m just very good at what I do," he finally said.

"The curse enhances my physical abilities, and I was granted a few magical abilities."

Yurei’s gaze lingered on him, assessing. Then, unexpectedly, she smiled.

"A liar, too," she murmured.

Ryuen merely shrugged. "Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been called that."

She assessed him for a while, then heaved a sigh.

"Keep your secrets to yourself. I’ll find out what you are someday. You can keep it..."

"...for now," she added, as if she already planned to unravel them later.

Ryuen couldn’t tell if that was meant to be reassuring or a warning.

Before he could say anything else, Yurei turned toward the door.

"I’ll see you at the briefing tomorrow. Don’t be late."

With that, she walked out, leaving him alone in the quiet lounge.

Ryuen exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair.

’So much for keeping a low profile.’

He thoughts still lingered on the conversation with Yurei when she reappeared at the doorway, her silver eyes sharp and focused.

Without a word, she motioned for him to follow.

She led him through the corridors, her steps quick.

As though there was something pressing she needed to address.

They exited Vanguard HQ, walking through the busy city streets.

The sun was already setting, a sign that they had spent a long time talking and fighting.

Yurei didn’t engage in any further conversation, leaving Ryuen to his thoughts.

He could tell that she wasn’t particularly interested in small talk unless it was necessary.

Which was a relief.

A minutes passed before they entered a building much larger than Vanguard HQ.

It stood in a part of the city where it towered over the other buildings, grand and imposing.

The entire structure was made of glass, with titanium security doors, and the energy emanating from within was remarkable.

Yurei stood still for a retina scan, then motioned for him to enter before following.

She led him through a silent hallway until they reached a set of elevator doors.

She scanned her retina again and stepped in, while Ryuen kept his eyes closed.

The entire décor was too bright for his eyes, and it wasn’t like he hadn’t seen it all before.

The elevator’s ascent was smooth and silent.

Yurei had her eyes fixed on the numbers and buttons, while Ryuen was lost in thought.

The closer they got to the top floor, the more he felt an energy similar to that of the Redspire Cliffs.

Finally, the elevator doors slid open, revealing another hall and a large metal door ahead.

This hall was dimly lit, compared to the one they had just left.

Yurei and Ryuen walked toward the door at the end of the hall without hesitation.

He could hear faint voices behind the other doors.

But he only heard the same voices—not different ones—and that raised his guard even higher.

Yurei scanned her retina again, held the door handle, and pushed it open.

Revealing another cold, dimly lit, and very large office.

At the far end, behind the black desk, sat the founder.

Tsukiyama Renji.

He was even more imposing in person, not as Ryuen had imagined when she mentioned him before.

He leaned back in his chair, one arm resting casually on the armrest, the other holding a glass of something dark... probably wine.

His icy blue eyes met Ryuen’s with a cool, calculated gaze.

His presence seemed to take up the entire room, giving Ryuen a faint sense of danger.

"You’re the recruit," Renji said, his voice cold and measured, sending a shiver down Ryuen’s spine.

There was no warmth, no curiosity—just a flat statement. "Daiki said some things about you."

"I see," Ryuen replied with the same cold tone.

Renji didn’t flinch.

He was unfazed, but deep down, he knew the man before him was anything but normal.

He watched as Ryuen’s icy blue eyes narrowed, a knowing look in them.

Then he leaned forward slightly, placing the glass down on the desk with a soft clink.

"I don’t have time for incompetence. That’s not what we do here. If you want to be part of this organization, you need to earn your place—and fast."

Ryuen tilted his head slightly. "And what exactly am I supposed to do to earn my place?"

Renji smirked. "Find the Monarch, put an end to the war, and take one of his eyes. Then replace one of yours with it."

Ryuen frowned. "What type of task is that?"

"That’s what everyone here is aiming for," Yurei chipped in, crossing her arms under her breasts.

"It’s like a final exam of some sort."

"I see," he mumbled and sighed. "Why would you people want a D-class human on your side? Shouldn’t I be with Vanguard?"

"You can fool them, but not me, Ryuen. I know my kind when I see one," Renji smirked and leaned back into his chair.

"Daiki has secured a gate that leads to the Redspire Dungeon and to Mirath," Renji stated as he reached under his desk.

"That’s your route back to Mirath and back."

"How do you intend to carry out what you’re going there for?"

Ryuen exhaled. He hadn’t thought of it before.

He was certain he wouldn’t just walk in there, ask for Yuta, and start attacking.

He needed a plan.

"You’re an assassin, right?" Renji said, but Ryuen shook his head.

"And why is that?"

"I retir—"

"Bullshit. You’re an assassin. I’ll get the retirement revoked, even though it wasn’t done here."

Ryuen’s brows curved into a frown. T

hey actually thought it was that easy to revoke a retirement done in another world.

"Mister Tsukiyama—"

Renji glared at him, cutting him off.

He frowned when he noticed Ryuen’s expression, and it already gave him an idea of what he was going to ask.

"Leave it to me. I can revoke it... the organization needs a skilled assassin like you, so relax."

’You tell me that when you’re giving off the energy of a Dragon, Orochi, and a human.’

Ryuen thought, but he didn’t linger on it. He simply sighed.

"Understood, sir."

"Wonderful." Renji flashed him a smile and moved his gaze to Yurei.

"I was told he provided a list of what he wanted, correct?"

"Yes, sir," she replied lazily, and he chuckled softly.

"Alright, burn it and get the weapon wall open before I get there," he ordered with a serious tone.

She immediately nodded, exhaled, and stepped out of the office.

Ryuen and Renji exchanged glares, sparks moving between them.

"You’re not human, are you?" Ryuen asked first, and it only got a smirk from Renji.

"If you think so," he answered with a shrug. "But you should ask yourself that, Ryuen."

He winked at Ryuen, tapped on his shoulder and asked him to come with him.
