Chapter 51: Joining A Guild V

Yurei exhaled and finally withdrew her blades.

She took a step back silently and shifted her gaze from Ryuen to where she had dropped her cloak.

Ryuen also dropped his hands, his dagger vanished as usual, and he placed his cold hands into his pockets.

Relieved that the rest was over and he could finally rest—or eat.

He watched as she walked to the center of the hall, bent down to pick up her cloak, and then straightened herself and turned to him.

"I’m impressed, not going to lie," she began as she slipped into the cloak and smoothed her hair down.

"You passed, so you’ll be able to get your citizenship documents, Guild membership ID, and a few other things."

"Call it a welcome package."

Ryuen smiled, although it didn’t reach his eyes.

He was more bothered about why she wanted to see him where no one would see them.

A chuckle escaped his lips. "I see you aren’t pleased with the fact I managed to match you."

"Tsk," she scoffed and unwrapped the bandages around her hand.

"I would easily take you down if I wanted to," she said, with a cold look in her eyes.

"I’m on my day off, and my leave will be ending tomorrow morning, since I’d have to follow you to Mirath."

"Hm?" Ryuen frowned. "Who told you I’d be going there?"

She tilted her head. "Hiro..."

"Who?"

"Daiki, the red-haired guy. He said something about you almost dying..."

"...oh yeah, I remember. Why are you accompanying me?"

"Well, since the mention of the Masked Crusader, the heads have been eager to see what you can do."

"Apparently, most of the humans here were brought through the same train, from different worlds, and everyone knows who the Masked Crusader is."

Ryuen’s gaze darkened as he slowly frowned.

"Tell me, why does everyone want to know about the Masked Crusader?"

She didn’t answer immediately; she only watched him with her eyes that seemed to see through him.

Then, without another word, she turned on her heels and walked toward the exit.

Ryuen followed her, curious, but still cautious about her.

They stepped into a dimly lit hallway outside the hall.

They moved through a series of halls and corridors and eventually stopped in a secluded lounge area, one of the less frequented spots in the HQ.

Once inside, Yurei shut the door behind them and gestured for Ryuen to take a seat.

When he did, she sat in front of him on the desk and crossed her arms.

"When did you arrive in this world?"

She asked, watching him closely to pick up any slight trace of nervousness, but Ryuen just frowned.

"If I remember correctly, you’re just supposed to put me through a test."

"Yes, I did, and I still am," she crossed her legs.

"Call it an oral test. Now tell me, when did you get here?"

Ryuen sighed in defeat.

There was no way he would be escaping her; she was relentless, and if he made a wrong move, she would hit him.

And he wouldn’t want that.

"Probably this week, but it has not been up to seven days."

"Any mentions of the Arbiter?"

Ryuen narrowed his eyes. He wanted to cover up, but seeing as it would be fruitless, he simply replied.

"Yes."

"Cursed or Blessed?"

"Cursed."

"Did anything strange happen since that moment?"

"Not out of the ordinary, except what happened to you also happened to me."

"So you were trapped in a dragon dungeon, killed, awakened, and got lost?" she asked, with a cold tone.

"Or did you fail a mission near your home and sink in the ocean?"

’Failed mission?’

Ryuen repeated. The memories started coming back to him.

The queen’s words, the map, the three humans she mentioned.

His eyes slowly widened when realization hit him.

"Did you happen to live in a coastal area?"

"Yes, I did. What does that have to do with what happened to you?" she fired back, oblivious of the reasons he was asking, until he chuckled.

"You can’t possibly be eighteen or a year older, right?"

"And if I am?"

"That’s not really an issue, I just want to be sure."

Yurei averted her gaze. "Yes, I am."

Ryuen’s eyes widened again, but this time there was a gleam of excitement in his eyes.

"She was actually right," he uttered absentmindedly.

But Yurei kicked his legs, gaining his attention once again. "Do you perhaps know me?"

"Yes and no, I was told to look for three of you..."

"...three of who? What are you talking about?"

"Queen Akane? Rings a bell?"

"Yes, got transferred to her palace as a prisoner before getting sold to the Monarch and left on the Island."

Ryuen chuckled. "Same circumstances," he mumbled and shifted closer to her.

"Do you know anything about a certain Hiroto who led the Northern Army?"

"Yes, we were moved together, but we got separated..." she trailed off. "How do you know this?"

"It doesn’t matter. All I know is I wouldn’t have to go around the world to find you and Hiroto. Now tell me, where is he?"

Yurei frowned, casting him a glare that silently asked if he had been hit on the head.

She exhaled, calming down a little, then she said, "Daiki Hiroto, the guy who gave us your information."

"Alright, that’s not an..."

Ryuen trailed off. The color drained from his face, and his gaze immediately became blank.

"Daiki? The red-haired dude?"

"Yes. How didn’t you know that was him?"

"How am I supposed to know everyone’s background? I only know yours because I was told," he explained rather calmly despite how shocked he was.

Without saying another word, he simply got up and made to leave when she slowly got up and threw a question at him.

"You aren’t just any mortal, right?" she stated bluntly.

Ryuen blinked, then he tilted his head to look at her. "That’s an interesting way to bid farewell."

"No, I am not finished with you," she said and stepped closer to him, leaving only a few inches between them.

"Tell me, Ryuen, what exactly happened before you found yourself here?"

Ryuen shrugged. "I was betrayed by the people I trusted, and I almost got killed by beasts."

"That’s not what I want to hear. Were you cursed with something? Or did you face a reincarnation too?"

"If I did, I wouldn’t still be in this body, would I?"

"True, but reincarnation also works like that, and you were reincarnated with something."

Ryuen frowned. "And what might that be?"

"I can’t figure that out, only you can, or maybe the medical team would do that."

His gaze went cold. "I’ll pass."

He wasn’t quite comfortable with anything that had to do with hospitals, especially where they would have to touch him.

He then lowered his gaze to her face. "What makes you think I’m not fully human?"

She exhaled sharply, clearly not in the mood for his questions, but she answered nevertheless.

"Your movements, your awareness..." she paused to glance at the wall clock behind him.

"That wasn’t just training. I’ve fought against enhanced human soldiers, and even they don’t react the way you do."

"Are you suggesting I’m also enhanced?"

"I’m suggesting you’re something else," she countered. "And I want to know what."

"And if I don’t feel like answering?" he asked, tilting his head slightly.

Yurei’s eyes narrowed. "Then I’ll have to find out myself."

A smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. "That sounds like a threat, Miss Shinigami."

"It’s not a threat," she corrected, poking his chest with her index finger. "It’s a promise."
