Chapter 53: The |Space| Rule

Eastern side of Moon God Capital City.

At ’Wonderful Time’ Tavern.

Sitting at a table in a corner of the establishment.

"You can come out now," Jin said while nonchalantly sipping on a steaming drink. "I was looking for someone to dine with anyway."

Silence...

A sigh echoed as a wizened old man and a cute young girl walked out of the folds of space. They did so without attracting the slightest bit of attention from anyone else dining in the tavern; it was as if no one even knew they existed.

"...How intriguing," Jin smirked.

"How did you figure out we were here?" the old man inquired, sitting himself and his granddaughter down at the table Jin was lounging at.

"I made a guess that turned out to be correct," Jin lied as easily as breathing.

The old man wasn’t buying it, as he clearly saw the young boy staring directly at them. There was nothing luck-based about that.

However, if he wasn’t willing to elaborate any further, then the old man would not continue probing.

"Even though you may have been raised in a palace and forced to endure many etiquette lessons, your manner of speech is quite remarkable," the old man changed the subject. "You act nothing close to your age. Very mature."

Siya couldn’t help but nod in agreement. He was nothing like her.

’Yep, yep... Wait, no! I’m very mature!’ she corrected herself while making some weirdly cute expressions.

"Let’s get straight to the point," Jin said calmly. "What is it that you want from me?"

"We—..." Before the old man could finish what he wanted to say, his granddaughter blurted out:

"We’re here to protect you!"

"...To protect me...?" Jin almost laughed but kept a poker face. "I see."

"Although I appreciate the sentiment, I don’t think you’ll be able to do that," he added.

"And why is that?" asked the old man. "You should have very good perception. You can tell how strong I am, can’t you?"

Jin turned his gaze up from his cup of steaming liquid. He seemed to appraise the old man as he replied, "Yes, I can. And that’s how I know you’re not strong enough."

The old man stopped speaking. His thoughts churned.

’Even though he shouldn’t be able to tell exactly how powerful I am, he should at least be aware that I’m in the Great Grandmaster Mage Realm.’

’So then, why is it that he insists I’m not strong enough? Could his enemies include a Peak Great Grandmaster Mage like myself?? But no, even then, he can’t be sure of the differences between those in the Great Grandmaster Realm since he’s not in the realm himself.’

’All of us look to be roughly equal in power to those not in the same state of being.’

’However, if that’s not the case, then...’

Could the Crown Prince have an enemy above the Great Grandmaster Mage Realm!?

’How is that possible, though?? Excluding my daughter, the last Archmage ascended over five hundred years ago! And there’s no way someone broke through to the Archmage Realm in secret!’

That was when an astonishingly terrifying idea formed.

’What if... this boy’s enemy is not a mortal enemy at all...?’

Horror filled the eyes of the old man as the way he looked at the Crown Prince changed drastically.

Jin smiled. "You understand now, don’t you? You aren’t powerful enough. You’ll die if you decide to help me."

"...Yes..."

The old man was still somewhat refusing to believe that such a young child could actually make an enemy out of the gods, or why he was still breathing despite that, but that was the only thing that made sense here.

However, the doe-eyed girl beside him was too oblivious to the slight nuances of their conversation. She could only deduce that they were no longer going to do what she begged her grandfather for.

"What do you mean you’re not powerful enough!? Grandpa, you’re the strongest on the continent!" Siya exclaimed, frustrated over the conversation that eluded her understanding.

The old man sighed. "You’re too young, Siya. But even so, I’ll need you to understand that we cannot shield this boy from harm. Your safety has precedence over all else; your mother made me promise this."

"B-But—..." Before Siya could protest any further, the old man’s hand blurred. She was knocked out cold in the same instant, before collapsing into his frail arms.

Turning around ever so momentarily, the old man said, "My name is Thomas Everfrost. And though I would like to tell you that you can contact me at any time, I want this to be our last meeting."

Jin nodded. "Farewell, Mr. Thomas. Oh, and do beware the Fire Spear; things are not always as they seem, you see."

Surprise briefly flashed across Thomas’s face as he faded from his position.

In a faraway location, he found himself in a daze, mumbling, "Beware the Fire Spear... The Fire Spear God? The same God whose territory my daughter ascended in...?"

Thomas didn’t know what to make of this. However, what he did know was that Prince Arthur was deceiving everyone; he was even more monstrous than described.

Meanwhile, back at the tavern, Jin could be seen still sipping on a strange steaming liquid.

It was unknown what he was thinking, but as a slight smirk crept up his face, one could tell that he was pleased.

"The Space Rule? How interesting," said Jin as he honed in on his minuscule comprehensions of the abstract concept that was Space.

"So that’s how it is." And then a small ripple appeared above his hand, with the space around it fluctuating.
