Chapter 715: Chapter 57: Five-People Battle (Second Update)
"Lieutenant Colonel, we have no issues with gathering materials and taking your orders. But we want a decent life." Dantai approached Lieutenant Colonel Pang Ke, lowered his voice, and began to negotiate. Everybody had their own desires, so Dantai deliberately exposed his intentions, posing as if seeking protection to lower Pang Ke’s guard.
"My squad has two hundred ’Scavengers’. If you guys can defeat Lieutenant Parker, I can give you one each. But you will have to serve as the vanguards and help me attack a queen’s base." Pang Ke gritted his teeth and made a hefty offer. Taking down a base would yield a vast amount of supplies and prestige. Given that the commander was already in his sixties and wouldn’t live for much longer, Pang Ke also had his eyes on the coveted position of power.
"Agreed. We’ll make the trade tonight so we can familiarize ourselves with these ’Scavengers’ as soon as possible." As long as Dantai knew where the ’Scavengers’ were stored, they would take them all. How the Resistance would fight the queen’s troops after losing their power armors was not his concern.
"Tang Zheng, pick your team." Before the commander could give his orders, one of the generals urged Tang Zheng. Lieutenant Parker was stepping out, followed by four robust and formidable subordinates. They towered above others with muscular builds, indicating that they were the top elites among the soldiers.
"Such a hassle, anyone get out there." Tang Zheng couldn’t be bothered to pick his team. He alone could handle these ’Scavengers’. That layer of armor could probably withstand nearly twenty Thunderballs at most.
The soldiers were taken aback by Tang Zheng’s words. They stared aghast at the Trojan Squad, comprised of a pregnant woman, a handicapped man, and a child. It was definitely not a formidable lineup. Even if they were to make comparisons based on the female members, they still fell short. After all, Parker had four soldier kings at his side.
"However, their confidence is quite something." The soldiers couldn’t help but lament as they looked at Lieutenant Parker’s displeased face. They knew he was provoked. If Tang Zheng’s team lost, they would be humiliated by him for sure.
However, the civilians simply enjoyed the spectacle. Upon hearing Tang Zheng’s domineering statement, they all applauded and shouted in approval. What they lacked was entertainment and diversion.
Qin Yan, tall with a beautiful face, stepped forward, immediately catching everyone’s eyes and silencing the noisy training field. With her long experience as a flight attendant, her every action exuded an aura of elegance and grace that made everyone feel warm as a spring breeze, and no one could resist taking an extra look.
Pang Meiqin didn’t want to be upstaged by Qin Yan, but she was too lazy to participate in this thankless competition.
Lu Fan jumped up and ran to Tang Zheng, grabbing his hand.
Being the team’s second-in-command, Dantai naturally had to participate. Xu Biyun loved games, and this was a lot more interesting than playing games. Besides, there was no danger to life.
Yu Manli wanted to correct her mistakes, but before she could step forward, she was anticipated by Ruan Feifei. The proud female host again wanted to grab the limelight. She didn’t want to lose to Qin Yan; she wanted to be the most outstanding and conspicuous woman in the team.
Seeing the women and children standing behind Tang Zheng, the spectating civilians were also shocked. The difference was too noticeable, wasn’t it?
"You guys are really confident." The generals’ face had fallen. If they lost this match, they would be despised by the civilians!
"The competition starts in one minute." The general in charge of hosting the competition also started to play tricks. Originally, he wanted to let Tang Zheng’s team familiarize themselves with the Scavengers, but now, he just wanted the competition to start right away.
Ruan Feifei and Xu Biyun didn’t care at all. They grabbed the handrail, jumped on the Scavenger effortlessly like a cat, and got in the driver’s seat. Within less than thirty seconds, the Scavenger stood up, ready to perform basic walking and shooting actions.
This was truly unbelievable. The soldiers couldn’t believe what they were seeing. They knew the civilians didn’t have a chance to touch the Scavenger in the past hour, so the proficiency they showed can only be explained by their talent.
The backgrounds, experiences, and educations of Dantai, Ruan Feifei, and Lu Fan have all made them different from ordinary people, made them approach elite standards, especially after being enhanced. Even Xu Biyun, an ordinary person, started to reveal her own traits after her body was enhanced. Although her Scavenger operation was a bit slower than the other four, she was already much better than an ordinary person.
"They can’t be underestimated!" The commander remarked for the first time.
"The competition starts. Attacks will be allowed after five minutes."
As the words of the host fell, Parker’s team, who already had a planned strategy via radio, immediately sprinted into the central area of the training field.
"They’re trying to use their familiarity with the terrain to wipe us out." Dantai instantly figured out Parker’s goal. Dantai, after all, being a native, was naturally familiar with the training field. Given that it had a lot of abandoned buildings, the operation of Scavengers would be more demanding.
"Steady and safe, Lu Fan, Feifei, you guys will be vanguard, Dantai, you take the middle, Biyun, hurry up and get familiar with the operation." Tang Zheng, who also saw the situation, immediately took command.
The five of them immediately formed a small team, advancing towards the ruins at a leisurely pace while taking this time to get familiar with the operation.
"Appropriate response, steady, and unhurried." The generals, listening to Tang Zheng’s command through the eavesdropping device in the driver’s seat, nodded approvingly. He had a good mindset, and his command was disciplined and flawless.
"Humph, compliment him later." Lieutenant Colonel Jansen, who was humiliated by Tang Zheng, sneered and stared at Tang Zheng, wishing that he would humiliate himself instantly.
The training ground was a five-hundred-meter stretch of abandoned buildings. The terrain wasn’t that complex, but the limited field of vision made it a likely spot for snipers
"They’ve loaded paint bullets, which aren’t strong at all." Lu Fan initially wanted to test the power of a 30mm caliber heavy machine gun, but was dismayed when a shot resulted in nothing but a splash of red paint on a shabby distant wall. Through the onboard speaker, she yelled, "Can we switch to live rounds? This is so boring."
At the sound of her sharp voice, everyone’s lips twitched. Such a cute little Lolita was too violent, wasn’t she? If hit by a live round, it could be fatal.
"So boring, where are you guys? Come out!" Lu Fan, usually cautious and measured, was suddenly displaying overt enthusiasm like a child engaged in a game of hide-and-seek, continuously launching paint bullets and even drifting further from her squad.
"Get Lu Fan back, Group Leader. Watch out for an attack." Once Xu Biyun had gained control over the scavengers, she started paying attention to the overall situation.
"No worries, she’s doing it on purpose." Tang Zheng objected. Lu Fan would definitely not commit such an amateur mistake. Clearly, she had a premeditated plan and was trying to lure the snake out of the hole. The locations she was firing at were where people were most likely to hide, and she had definitely calculated the consumption of her ammunition.
"As a child, I am undoubtedly their first target for an attack. Still, they might also guess that we would think this way and might shift their focused assault elsewhere, for instance, on Biyun. That’s why I want to increase their confidence and odds by making them believe I can be killed with one shot." With these thoughts swirling in her mind, Lu Fan continued to loudly shout while she kept a vigilant watch all around. "I’m slightly detached from the team to create an opening, displaying my naivety and recklessness. Lieutenant Parker, aren’t you taking the bait yet?"
Parker was an elite and would not act impulsively. If he were able to stay hidden, it would keep the pressure on the rivals. The human spirit was limited and if stretched too far, it would slacken, providing an opportunity for an attack.
While neither side had fired a shot, a tense and heavy atmosphere started swirling above the training ground, compelling the civilians to slow down their breath.
"I’ve used thirty rounds, still, have nineteen hundred left, enough for a spurge." Lu Fan glanced at the remaining bullet count on the screen and slightly increased firing speed, simultaneously familiarizing herself with the gun’s performance.
"Open fire, a hundred rounds per person!" Tang Zheng noticed the caution among the team members and gave the next order, aiming to relieve any stress, quickly acclimate them to the battlefield and improve their shooting skills.
Then, the initial silence in the training ground was interrupted by intermittent gunshots. Bang, bang. Red paint bullets exploded one after another, dappling the dilapidated walls with vibrant colours.
"What good is random shooting? It is utterly foolish."
"The fools are you. They are just practicing shooting. Have you noticed where the paint bullets are hitting?"
The soldiers were divided with their opinions. Mostly, they were against Tang Zheng’s team, as the battle conditions seemed rather unfair. Those who initially were on the fence, started betting on Parker’s victory again.
"I can be the bait." Ruan Feifei was confident. As she didn’t like the situation of a stalemate, which was too uncomfortable.
"Quiet, focus on your work," Tang Zheng frowned. Ruan Feifei, the hostess, was taking too many liberties.
"Tang Zheng wants to annihilate them without any losses; otherwise, he would have arranged the bait earlier," Dantai knew that Tang Zheng wanted a resounding victory. Otherwise, there would have been plenty of ways to lure the snake out.
"Better, Uncle can leave the team and take them down all by himself. If they target Tang Zheng, they’re done for." Lu Fan thought of this approach to be viable.
"I think it could work." Dantai agreed. He wouldn’t mind if Tang Zheng stole all the limelight. In his opinion, the process didn’t matter as long as they won.
"I hope they don’t attack for a while; we should familiarize ourselves with the terrain." Tang Zheng was not worried. The longer the stalemate lasted, the worse it would be for Parker’s team. As the civilians would start thinking that they were incapable.
"Considering Parker’s impatient temperament, I guess he will reach his limit in about seven to eight minutes." Dantai inferred the prediction, judging Parker’s character by his words and expressions.
"Tang Zheng, I can try unlocking the radar." In order to compete, the radar on the scavengers was locked. Xu Biyun, finding the code lines not that tricky, was ready to give it a try.
"No need, keep on your guard, especially to the rear." Tang Zheng did not want Xu Biyun to be distracted and taken out. Since the opponent’s radar was also presumably disabled, they could only ascertain locations visually. If they failed to attack beyond the ambush range, they would fall behind. Once they moved, their location might be exposed.
