Chapter 479: Chapter 36 Positional Warfare

Humans’ individual combat skills are inferior to those of the Beastman Soldiers, especially the elite Guard Team, a single human wouldn’t stand a chance. The only reason they managed to resist for so many years is their numbers and high technology. However, as time passed, the numerical advantage had been equalled, even surpassed by the Beastmen’s frightening reproductive capacity. The high-tech edge had faded due to the shrinking living space and loss of technical personnel, leading the humans to be driven to the base by the Beastman army. Nevertheless, the last refuge for mankind was on the verge of destruction.

A dozen or so sergeants were running around on the battlefield, shouting for everyone to get into battle positions. Civilian soldiers, trembling with fear, were forced into the trenches under the escort of veterans. Some were busy placing boxes of ammunition nearby for the soldiers to use.

Perhaps because of the impending final battle, ammunition supplies were generous this time. The civilians finally got rid of their old guns and each was armed with a shiny new Chainsaw Gun.

Tang Zheng and his companions were relatively lucky, placed in the third trench. There were still thousands of scapegoats in front of them. These misfortunate souls, many forcibly conscripted with no more than a full meal to their name, had to stake their lives on the battle ahead.

"It’s okay, a shot will fix him up," Tang Zheng was squatting next to An Ning, touching his forehead and neck, it was hot, and his pulse was fast, but he had to reassure An Ping.

"You don’t have to fight. Take care of An Ning and Ai Yixin, as well as attending to the increasing number of wounded." Tang Zheng pulled out the First Aid Kit, took out a syringe and an antipyretic injection. He skillfully drew the medicine and injected it into An Ning’s buttocks.

Gazing at those broken legs, Tang Zheng had more than once been seized with the impulse to use the Emergency First Aid Kit on him. But he resisted. The kit was too precious, a lifesaving item not to be wasted on An Ning who was a burden.

Once he finished giving the injection, the sound of gunshots had already grown dense. The civilians’ combat quality was questionable. Only a few minutes in, the Beastmen had already advanced to a range of six hundred meters. Faced with the onslaught of Beastmen flooding in like a tidal wave, some of them were even scared enough to squat down in the trench.

"The western position needs Cannon Fodder support." The battalion commander who was in charge of the battle was shouting into the phone. The answer he received was ’Hold on at all costs, the Cannon Fodder will be there soon.’ Enraged, the commander smashed the phone. It had been five minutes since he last heard this, but the artillery fire was nowhere to be seen, and the Beastmen had already advanced to the four hundred meter range.

The Beastmen’s gruesome faces were already visible. Several dozen terrified civilians suddenly sprang from the trenches and ran.

"Guards, open fire." The battalion commander unhinged his wind discipline button and angrily gave the order. Gunfire sounded, and those fleeing soldiers were immediately shot dead.

One of the fleeing soldiers fell into the trenches, landing on Li Meilian, scaring her into screaming.

"Don’t worry, everyone, fire at will. Give it every shot you’ve got." The battalion commander picked up the phone and connected to the Command Post, calling for artillery support.

Tang Zheng joined the battle, pulling a Chainsaw Gun from a dead soldier. He lay half on the edge of the trench, firing at the Beastmen on the other side. Every target he locked on met its end. Thus, a small gap immediately appeared in the frontline. After replacing the ammo clip, he resumed firing, and the Beastmen corpses began to tumble again.

"Li Muqing, get me an ammo clip." Tang Zheng ran out of bullets and shouted out, Li Muqing answered and immediately brought the ammo.

"Idiot, duck down." Tang Zheng roared again, trying to stabilize the morale of these newbies, "Don’t panic. Make sure to aim before you shoot, they only have one life too."

Li Muqing placed several ammo clips next to him, panting with exhaustion. Just as he was about to rest, he was chased away by Tang Zheng, "Get more."

Tang Zheng’s marksmanship was adept. Under such circumstances, although he couldn’t guarantee that every shot hit the target, he could maintain an 80 percent accuracy rate. As a result, the attacking line of the Beastmen visibly receded at the breach where he was positioned.

The civilians nearby noticed this and were greatly relieved, and their trigger fingers no longer trembled. Although their success rate did not improve much, the atmosphere was changing.

The battalion commander, standing a dozen or so trenches back, also saw Tang Zheng’s performance and nodded approvingly. He ordered his subordinates, "Go, send them extra ammunition."

"Liu Yue, come over here, don’t waste your energy on these Cannon Fodders." Tang Zheng called Liu Yue over. Among these newbies, she was the most skilled and had achieved the most significant results. In just a short time, she had taken out over a hundred Beastmen.

With her Gauss Sniper Rifle on her back and a determined look on her face, Liu Yue had woken up from her dream of becoming a superstar and was maturing as the battles increased, becoming more deteremined and insightful.

The Beastmen had advanced within two hundred meters when the Artillerymen finally started to show their might with a complete carpet bombardment from three directions in the small town.

The rapid descending sounds of cannon shells made everyone’s scalp tingle, followed by continuous explosions. Dust mixed with body parts flew in every direction, obstructing vision.

No one dared to remain lying down on the edge of the trench. Everyone squatted down, holding their ears and opening their mouths, waiting for the bombardment to cease. The ground kept shaking, some people lost their balance and fell, mounds of soil trickled down from the constructed trenches, burying them.
