Chapter 478: Chapter 35: Struggle at the Bottom_2

"Whatever, by the way, bullets are expensive, you know. I’ll give you more after you run out." Tang Zheng didn’t mind, taking out three hundred rounds of armor-piercing high-explosive rounds and giving them to her.

"Thank you." Liu Yue thanked him immediately, while Li Meilian and the other women were immensely envious. They knew that Tang Zheng’s main weapon also used these bullets, so they had looked up the price of the Gauss sniper rifle, which was quite daunting.

Ruan Zhimin and his two companions were so astonished their jaws almost hit their feet. He just gave away something so valuable that easily? Are you joking? For a moment, the big-breasted sister and another guy from Vietnam wished they also had a squad leader as generous as Tang Zheng.

"Here are twenty cannon beam bullets for you, make sure use them sparingly."

"That’s the bullet that’s worth one point each, right?" The big-breasted sister looked at the magnetic storm rifle in her hand and pouted. When compared to others, she felt like a clown. Even Li Muqing, who was obviously a newbie, was holding a thunderstorm rifle, which was too extravagant.

"Have you guys rested enough? Aren’t you leaving?" Tang Zheng issued the eviction order. If not for the presence of too many people nearby, he would have definitely killed these three without hesitation.

"Following you is the safest, and don’t forget that we share the common mission target. Isn’t it easier to kill the Beastman General together?" Ruan Zhimin was no fool. He seemed indifferent as he spoke, but his eyes were locked on Tang Zheng, checking to see if the answer he had guessed days ago was correct.

"But I’m more worried about you guys backstabbing us." Pang Meiqin snorted, wishing that the big-breasted sister would leave quickly.

"It should be us who are worried. Judging from my estimation, you must have killed a lot of us." Ruan Zhimin didn’t have enough squad members. Indeed, being with Tang Zheng would give him the greatest gains. As for those women with low combat power, he didn’t care about them at all. He was just pretending to be humble to deceive Tang Zheng.

"Alright, whatever." Tang Zheng needed some cannon fodder to attract the enemy’s firepower. The least female high school student was not going to pick an enemy, she would slash anyone she saw.

"Uncle, these two weapons are good, are they your new spoils of war?" Lu Fan, looking at the firearms in the hands of Li Meilian and Li Muqing, complimented. She didn’t think these two women had that much ability.

"Contributed by the Philippine Trojan Squad."

The big-breasted sister immediately pricked up her ears, trying to eavesdrop on some information. The others also looked strange and very concerned.

"Hehe, don’t be afraid, they’ve already been wiped out." Tang Zheng’s words let Pang Meiqin and the others breathe a sigh of relief, but the Vietnamese had a stiff face, feeling suffocated as if a fishbone was stuck in his throat.

The two women clutched their rifles tightly, eyeing Lu Fan warily.

"Hmph, stingy, I didn’t say I wanted it." Lu Fan stuck out her tongue and ignored them.

"Staying here isn’t an option either, I have a bad feeling. Let’s leave." Killing intent was surging on the entire interlocking defense line as elite troops kept coming. Pang Meiqin guessed correctly, the highest commander of the small town was a wise general, not a coward. He was determined to defend the town to the end, turning it into a graveyard for the Beastmen.

"Where can we go? It’s too late now. The beastmen are coming from all directions. If we go out, we will be killed and made into dinner." Li Meilian didn’t want to end up as a meat bun.

Now, all the routed soldiers were being reorganized. Regardless of their original team, they were grouped together and sent to fill up the defense line. Even the newly conscripted civilian cannon fodder couldn’t escape this fate. Some who caused trouble were shot. Like lambs to be slaughtered, they were rounded up. Fully armed soldiers stood guard outside, preventing anyone from causing disruption.

A series of gunshots rang out in unison. When the smoke mixed with the smell of blood drifted over, the crowd outside the checkpoint fell silent because not far away, over a hundred disobedient old soldiers had been executed by firing squad. The rows of corpses were very eye-catching.

"We can’t keep going like this. Those civilians have been crushed. We must incite them to cause trouble. Otherwise, we will definitely be treated as cannon fodder." Ruan Zhimin wasn’t a fool either. He thought of a plan that would kill two birds with one stone, but unfortunately, Tang Zheng didn’t fall for it.

"You can go on your own." Tang Zheng hadn’t decided what to do yet. He wasn’t alone anymore; one wrong decision could ruin the entire team. If they acted recklessly, it’d definitely not be worth the loss.

However, not all news were bad. Dantai Zongqi, Gao Yu, and Chu Baichuan found Tang Zheng. Seeing his wife, Chu Baichuan’s heart ached, and tears welled up in his eyes. He squatted down beside her and asked lovingly after her wellbeing, even resting his head on her belly to listen to their child’s heartbeat.

"Go thank them, especially Qin Yan. If it weren’t for her, I would have been killed by the punishment troops a long time ago." Ai Yixin looked relieved, slapped her husband lightly, and let him thank Tang Zheng and the others.

The luckiest ones, Zhang Hongtao and Sun Bowe, had survived. When they saw Tang Zheng with the few newbies still alive, they broke into tears. They were in tatters, covered in wounds, and their skinny bodies were a pitiful sight.

"Boss, I was wrong. Do you have anything to eat?" Having starved for several days, Sun Bowe had lost his elite demeanor. He snatched the bottle of mineral water that Xu Biyun had handed him, gulping it down and asking for some food.

The men were staring eagerly at Tang Zheng, their lips cracked, unable to even produce saliva.

"Yes." Tang Zheng nodded his head, took out some biscuits and bread, and the men immediately tore their packets open and shoved them into their mouths. They were starving.

"That’s what you get for not listening to Tang Zheng’s advice," Pang Meiqin said cheerily, watching their unfortunate state.

"Don’t rush, eat slowly." Unlike the disdain from Li Meilian and Liu Qian, Li Muqing had changed her aloof demeanor, offering them water to forge better relationships. Through their recent experiences, she had fully realized that the loners would be ultimately abandoned in this cruel game. No one had the energy to accommodate her, even if she was stunningly beautiful.

Their reunion got interrupted - a group of soldiers ran over, and immediately announced a wartime order.

"You’ve been drafted, regardless of your gender, into the Third Defense Team. Follow me to the defense area," an officer said, coldly eyeing everyone, ready to leave.

"We have injured people and a pregnant woman here, also going to the battlefield?" Sun Bowe and the others were panicking. Tang Zheng naturally stepped forward; it was his responsibility as their team leader.

"Who asked you guys not to end it when you could? Nowadays who can afford to raise children? Who can you blame?" One of the soldiers complained, mumbling, "Abortion is just right; otherwise, you wouldn’t even be able to afford baby milk formula."

"Say that again if you dare." Chu Baichuan shot up, as angry as a bull.

Qin Yan and Xu Biyun quickly held him back.

"Humph! And that kid, with such injuries, won’t survive. It’s a godsend he’s held on this long." The soldier didn’t care, spitting onto the ground, provoking these civilians.

"Shut up! I’m sorry, I can’t help with that. The field hospital lacks medical supplies, and they won’t treat civilians." The officer scolded the soldier, then apologized. He waved his hand, ordering the soldiers to lead them away.

"Don’t argue, Leader. Being with Yixin is not bad, perhaps it’s our last moments." Chu Baichuan bit his lip. Anyone could see the disappointment in his eyes - how he yearned to see his child who hadn’t been born yet.

"You two, carry An Ning." Tang Zheng casually selected two men to take care of An Ning, then led the rest into the defense area. This area was on the west side of the small town, not the main battlefield, but the atmosphere was still tense.

"About two-thirds are civilians? And we’re on the front line? How can we defend this?" Gao Yu cursed, looking around for an opportunity to escape. Unfortunately, soldiers were watching them coldly with their gleaming gun muzzles out.

"Leader, save my brother." Just after finding a trench to huddle in, An Ping cried out, with a desperate voice that startled everyone nearby. Curses followed the shock, but soon their faces turned ghostly pale: amidst their cries, the Beastmen launched an attack! (To be continued.
