Chapter 1296: Chapter 50: Solution (5th Update)

The Bird’s Nest was very spacious, about the size of a football field, with a transparent floor that provided a direct view of the scenery outside, and the clear faces of the Conquerors waiting outside.

Tang Zheng looked at the center of the Bird’s Nest, where the platform he had seen the last time was missing, causing him to reveal a bitter smile.

"I curse you all to die a terrible death!" Tang Zheng cursed in unwilling anger. He ultimately hadn’t garnered the favor of Lady Luck; he had come to the Trojan Room, cured his serious illness, but what awaited him was another kind of death. Had he known this would happen, he would rather have enjoyed his last few months in reality.

From the top of the Bird’s Nest, some oval-shaped ovaries dangled, and with squelching sounds, they ruptured. One by one, humanoid monsters with eagle heads and wings flew down.

Tang Zheng had nowhere to hide. After running a few steps, he was grasped by sharp claws, and like a scythe cutting through straw, he was torn into more than a dozen pieces.

Ten minutes passed, and when Tang Zheng failed to appear, everyone simultaneously showed looks of disappointment. But then, like cats whose tails were stepped on, their sweat glands stood on end.

The Bird’s Nest opened its mouth and vomited a clump of unidentifiable minced meat. Without asking, it was definitely Tang Zheng.

"You go!" Dantai picked the same University student who had lost a finger while scouting for him earlier.

The Nurse felt lucky to have escaped this fate and took a deep breath of relief.

"No, I don’t want to—save me!" the University student pleaded, looking toward his Alumni, but they were powerless to help and averted their eyes.

"Gag him!" Ruan Feifei shouted, not wanting to further dampen morale.

Dantai didn’t mind doing dirty work. He grabbed the University student’s face and dragged him toward the Bird’s Nest. After confirming the command, he forcibly threw the student in.

Another tense and tormenting wait ensued. The Newbies prayed for the student’s successful return, but what they got in the end was a mass of rotten flesh.

"Go in yourself and save us the trouble of getting rough!" Dantai said coldly, ignoring the pleading look in the Nurse’s eyes, utterly tactless.

"Wait, pick that one!" Mu Nianqi spoke up, beginning to test the Bird’s Nest with certain rules. She would not allow Cannon Fodder to be wasted so carelessly—even in death, there must be value.

The Nurse clicked the confirmation. Then pain shot through her finger, so intense that she fainted.

Teng Yuangxiang slapped the Nurse forcefully and poured some ice-cold water on her, waking her up.

"Save me," the Nurse looked at her colleague, who averted their eyes and trembled, like an anxious quail in the cold wind.

The Nurse was lucky. She entered an empty Bird’s Nest and came out as pale as snow.

"Keep going," Dantai ordered emotionlessly, just as a Wild Beast needs to prey to survive, the Conquerors would use Newbies in their place.

The Nurse had given up, walking into the Bird’s Nest designated by Mu Nianqi like a zombie. Ten minutes later, she turned into a puddle of rotten flesh and was spat out.

The dilapidated white Nurse Uniform mixed with flesh and blood, filthy and piercing everyone’s eyes. Then, everyone’s gaze fell on the last remaining Nurse.

"Haha, I knew it. Don’t look at me; I’ll go," the Nurse said with a ghastly smile, calmly flying toward the Bird’s Nest.

The Nurse didn’t want to commit suicide; she wanted to take a chance. Her luck was good as she got hold of a birdcage with two White Pigeons inside.

"Not bad, you can rest now. Xueqi, treat her injuries. Tang Zheng, take the pigeons to the kitchen, I’ll continue to monitor them." The two White Pigeons were obviously not enough. Dantai’s words caused the Newbies, who thought they had avoided disaster, to tense up again.

"We choose him!" Zhao Yunwu pointed to Tang Zheng’s Bodyguard. In the Team, besides the University student, only he, the Nurse, and Ge Cang remained.

"Haha, do you think Ge Cang and Mu Nianqi have a relationship so you don’t dare to provoke them, bullying me instead?" The Bodyguard drew out a dagger and twirled it between his fingers, staring at them like a blood-thirsty Wild Wolf, "You’re too full of yourselves, huh? I’m not some soft egg like Tang Zheng or the Nurse without the strength to truss a Chicken."

The Newbies fell silent, feeling the killing intent of the Bodyguard. Even Zhao Yunwu didn’t want to speak, fearing trouble.

"If you want me to go, fine, but first get past the knife in my hand!" The Bodyguard was no fool and declared his worth. "Group Leader, even if I’m a retired Special Agent, I am still better in Combat than these University students, right?"

"Hmm, you pick someone else," Dantai said. After all, as a Special Agent, he had a soft spot for soldiers.

The Newbies didn’t speak, observing each other.

"Hurry up; don’t waste time, or I’ll start picking," Teng Little Three urged. Newbies had no rights; this was inevitable.

"You go send the birdcage!" Seeing Dong Zixuan hesitate, Tang Zheng tossed her the birdcage and flew upward. He wanted to observe these birdcages, looking for a way to minimize deaths.

"Sun Jingshan, why don’t you go? You’re the bravest!" a girl University student looked at Sun Jingshan, and her words incited agreement.

Sun Jingshan was utterly bewildered. He had been trying to come up with strategies for everyone, but the thanks he received turned out to be this, leaving him suddenly disheartened.

Dantai couldn’t tolerate these whiners. He picked a boy and threw him into the Bird’s Nest. People like Sun Jingshan were still worth keeping around.

"Found anything?" Jing Lan and Tao Ran couldn’t bear to watch anymore and followed Tang Zheng to see if there was any way they could help.

"All the Bird’s Nests look the same." Tang Zheng thought of the two Bronze Keys dropped by the BOSS. He took one out and touched it to a Bird’s Nest, but nothing happened. After trying for about fifteen minutes, he took out a fragment of the Magic Mirror he had found in the Cyclops Cave.

Through the dark mirror piece, Tang Zheng observed the Bird’s Nest, but nothing was amiss. He didn’t give up and adjusted the angle, first aiming it at the sunlight to refract into the Bird’s Nest, then checking it again.

Tao Ran and Jing Lan stood quietly to the side, waiting for the result.

"Should we try a different Bird’s Nest?" Lu Fan flew over and hugged Tang Zheng’s arm.

"This is the tenth one!" Jing Lan’s lips moved slightly, she couldn’t help but ask, "How many Newbies have died?"

"Five. We’ve checked twelve Bird’s Nests in total, but we’re lucky to have found another Birdcage." Lu Fan’s face was also pale; the use of Cannon Fodder was too cruel.

"Go tell Dantai to stop for a moment, we have enough White Pigeons for now." Tang Zheng, after fruitlessly trying several Bird’s Nests, started to focus on observing just one, constantly shifting and shining the Magic Mirror on it.

"Okay." Lu Fan complied with Tang Zheng’s instructions and flew down.

"All of you come over!" Tang Zheng took out two more fragments of the Magic Mirror and handed them to the team members.

"How about we try smearing some blood on it?" Jing Lan had the idea and acted on it, cutting her face slightly to smear the fresh blood on the mirror. She aimed it at her eye again and was disappointed when the Bird’s Nest showed no change.

"Maybe there isn’t enough blood?" Tao Ran was about to try it himself when Tang Zheng stopped him.

"I’ll do it!" Tang Zheng was much bolder than Jing Lan. His Protective Clothing withdrew like a tide, and he cut open a blood vessel, collecting some blood to soak the entire mirror piece in it.

The mirror piece seemed to undergo a change, its sharp edges becoming smooth. Tang Zheng took it out and used it to observe the Bird’s Nest.

"Any discoveries?" Jing Lan suggested, "How about mixing our blood together?"

"It’s not about the blood. Go to the bottom." Tang Zheng flew to the top of the Bird’s Nest, where there was a vine, like an umbilical cord, hanging it on a Tree branch.

This time, he chose the right position. Through the mirror piece, he could see a ring-shaped transparency next to the vine, directly into the interior of the Bird’s Nest.

"We’ve succeeded!" Tang Zheng shouted happily. There was nothing in the Bird’s Nest, except for an ovary hanging from the top. He flew over to another and saw a platform with a Birdcage on it, filled with cheerfully chirping White Pigeons.

"I’ll go tell everyone the good news." Jing Lan flew down, and after about fifteen seconds, cheers could be heard.

"Group Leader, you’re amazing!" Zhao Yunwu gave a big thumbs up to compliment Tang Zheng, deeply relieved.

The cunning kid, utilizing his constant participation in discussions, had swayed several people to his side and gained control of the conversation. By observing, he knew which Alumni had no friends and easily picked out the unfortunate ones. People tend to follow others, especially when their lives are at stake. They started to listen to Zhao Yunwu, and the result was that more and more Alumni joined their ranks. Of course, there were some who were dissatisfied, but the numeric disadvantage made their objections futile.

No matter what, Zhao Yunwu wouldn’t end up as Cannon Fodder, and neither would his loyal followers. It was like a Pyramid, with the unfortunate ones always at the bottom.

"Smart guy, not bad at speaking either. If not for the Great Purge, he would probably survive until the end." Mu Nianqi felt like applauding him, but when Tang Zheng came down, her attention was all on him, "Impressive, he actually found a solution in this dilemma that seemed to require human lives for exploration."

It took twenty minutes for Tang Zheng to identify eight Bird’s Nests with White Pigeons. He sent the Newbies to retrieve them. Although entering meant losing a finger, it was far better than death.

Returning to the kitchen with sixteen White Pigeons, their help enabled the gathering of the Green Peas to be completed by dinner time.

The number of White Pigeons in the Bird’s Nests was just that, and there was nothing Tang Zheng could do about the low odds – just the thought of it was terrifying to everyone. Continuing the trial would mean many deaths.

"It’s done, impossible!" The stepmother’s chubby face was filled with disbelief, her mouth twitched, she thought about kicking over the bucket again, but fortunately, Cinderella was quick-witted and hugged it in time.

"You don’t have an evening gown, are you planning on embarrassing yourself by wearing that?" The stepmother was looking for an excuse.

"Mother, we should go, or we’ll be late." The beautifully dressed eldest sister appeared by the door, a striking contrast to Cinderella, "Look at yourself, all covered in ash, move aside before you dirty my dress."

"Don’t bother anymore, if you go, you will only shame us!" The stepmother dropped these words and rushed off in a hurry.

"Don’t be sad, there will be an evening gown, Crystal Shoes, and even a Carriage!" Lu Fan comforted the crying Cinderella. Everyone had seen these items in the Bird’s Nests already; it was just that no one had retrieved them yet.
