Chapter 1249: Chapter 3: Slaughter
The two nurses did not die from a single slash, their terrified screams filling the air. A huge gash split their heads open, as crimson blood soaked their white nurse uniforms and splattered against the wall in a ghastly sight.
The assailant, gasping heavily, fixed his gaze on the screaming nurse and swung his kitchen knife again, striking her cheek and slicing from the corner of her eye to her mouth. Her nose split open, and her flesh peeled back gruesomely.
The nurse lay rigid, clearly not going to survive, while the other, too scared to scream, was not spared. The assailant killed her with a single chop and then pursued the doctors who had fled.
It only took the assailant a few seconds to butcher the nurse. The doctors had not escaped far, their panicked cries for help were cut short as a buzz-cut doctor was caught. Stabbed in the back, and as he fell to the ground, another slash to his neck ended his life instantly.
There were several patients walking in the corridor and many family members around, especially due to the food poisoning incident which had drawn a sizable crowd. Shocked by the bloodbath unfolding before them, they froze and then began to scream, frantically trying to escape the madman approaching.
"Get out of my way, move!" the assailant shouted, swinging his kitchen knife to carve a path. His target was the doctors, and he didn’t want to harm ordinary people.
Some quick-thinking family members, seeing no escape, crouched by the wall, but many more crowded in the corridor, as nobody trusted the words of a murderous maniac.
At first, the assailant pushed past a few civilians, but seeing that the doctors were about to get away, he turned vicious. Regardless of who was before him, he swung his blade, knocking down several people. The crowd, terrified, darted to the sides, clearing the way for him to catch up to the doctors.
The assailant swung his arm, his bloodied kitchen knife coming down with all his strength on a bespectacled doctor’s neck, severing the spine and leaving only a shred of flesh connected. Blood spurted like a fountain, painting an abstract Picasso on the wall.
Doctor Xie Ding, hearing the rapid footsteps behind him, ran terrified into the nearby internal medicine department. The assailant followed him there and happened upon a nurse about to check on the commotion. He killed four more before rushing out to chase after the one who escaped.
The smell of blood began to permeate as the assailant burst out of the corridor, entering another where a group of university students who had just visited their poisoned classmates. Suddenly confronted with a man covered in blood chasing down doctors, they were stunned.
"Help!" The doctor had no courage to fight back and screamed in terror, while a not so tall university student, impulsively charged out.
"Stop!" The student shouted, kicking at the assailant, while the female students looked horrified, covering their mouths.
"Get lost!" The assailant slashed at the student’s leg, bypassed him and would have finished him off if he were not so focused on pursuing the doctor.
Tang Zheng, following the turmoil, entered the corridor and saw what was unfolding. From several meters away, knowing he was too late to help and unable to use his gun, he grabbed a nearby trash can. With Herculean effort, he lifted and hurled it at the assailant.
Whoosh, the thirty-odd-pound trash can flew with the wind, soaring over people’s heads before accurately striking the assailant’s face, knocking him over.
Seeing their chance, several university students prepared to subdue the assailant, who had a strong resistance to being hit. Bloodied and dazed, he staggered to his feet and swung his knife wildly.
Facing the gleaming kitchen knife, the crowd retreated.
"Don’t mess around!" Tang Zheng pushed through the crowd and hurled himself at the assailant, catching his wrist and with a swift move, body-slammed him to the ground.
The assailant struggled, but Tang Zheng kicked him squarely in the face, knocking him out cold.
"He’s all yours!" Tang Zheng left the assailant to the university students and went straight to get food. The others, seeing the hallway littered with corpses, retched, but Tang Zheng remained unfazed, having seen too much already.
"What’s all the noise outside? So loud?" An Xiuru, disliking the commotion, sat on her hospital bed. Seeing Tang Zheng enter, she casually asked, "Eat and then you can go, no need to stay with me."
"There’s a killer, probably a doctor-patient dispute!" Tang Zheng grabbed an apple and tossed it to the little girl in the next bed, "Stay quiet, and don’t go out."
The little girl with a face full of curiosity pouted, clearly displeased.
"Scared me to death! Did you see? Blood everywhere! Several people died." A middle-aged woman, having got her food, clutched at her chest, gasping anxiously. Too much had happened recently, she was considering transferring hospitals.
In the end, Tang Zheng could not avoid the police. Half an hour later, they came to question him about how he subdued the assailant, and he gave a brief statement.
"What’s your address? We’ll give you a commendation for valor." The policeman said sternly, as if someone owed him money.
"I don’t need it." Tang Zheng refused.
"So you won’t be taking the bonus either?" the policeman was shocked, as he had never seen anyone like this before.
"No need." Tang Zheng made a dismissive gesture, "If there’s nothing else, please leave; the patient needs to rest."
"Hey, do you even know what you’re refusing?" the policeman was frustrated. If it weren’t for the reporters crowded outside and the police station needing to maintain its image, he wouldn’t bother with this hero, considering his uncooperative attitude, he might even have taken him in for exceeding self-defense.
"Xiu Ru, I’m leaving for a bit, I’ll come to see you tonight!" Tang Zheng was too slow, and the group of reporters ready to interview the poisoned students, like sharks smelling blood, all rushed into the ward—a young man apprehending a criminal who had wounded dozens would be sensational news, especially if the young man had a tough backstory.
"Sorry, you’ve got the wrong person, I didn’t save anyone." Tang Zheng made up an excuse and squeezed his way out before the reporters could react.
He didn’t sleep well last night, Tang Zheng needed to catch up on some sleep, but when he got back to the villa and was about to open the door, he frowned—the strand of hair he had placed in the door crack was gone.
Dismissing Mother Quinlan’s Roar, Tang Zheng didn’t use the main door but climbed in through a second-floor window, and checked each room, just reaching the bedroom, Teng Yuangxiang, clad only in an apron and humming a tune, waltzed out, entertaining herself with a waltz.
"Teng Yuangxiang, go back inside and put on some clothes!" Tang Zheng scowled, holstered his weapon, and took out his mobile phone to call Lin Weiguo.
"Oh, where did you go? I’ve been waiting for you," Teng Yuangxiang said joyfully, ignoring Tang Zheng’s command, she ran over and cling onto him, deliberately kissing him on the cheek with a smacking sound.
"Tang Zheng? I thought Qin Yan had already contacted you," Lin Weiguo laughed brightly, "Anyway, don’t worry, no one died this time. Not to talk much now, I have to dine with your sister-in-law. You chat with Qin Yan."
Teng Yuangxiang caught the conversation between the two, she pouted knowing it was the Old Soldier creating opportunities for Qin Yan.
"Stop calling, I’ll tell you." Teng Yuangxiang cooed.
"Go to the living room!" Tang Zheng did not give Teng Yuangxiang a friendly face.
"Why are you being so harsh? It’s always like this, I’m a woman too, I also want to be cared for." Teng Yuangxiang was annoyed, her tone full of complaint, "After leaving the Trojan Room, I didn’t even go home, but ran straight to you to update you, and you treat me like this?"
Tang Zheng was silent; Teng Yuangxiang’s flattery toward him was limitless, but he just didn’t like it.
"My demands are really not that many, even if you treat me like a ’***’ would be fine, I don’t even want to be your wife, not even a lover!" Teng Yuangxiang saw Tang Zheng relaxing and immediately intensified her approach, she didn’t mind lowering her stature, as long as she succeeded in turning the tables, everything would be worth it.
"I treat all of you equally; you really don’t need to do this." Using women in that way was something Tang Zheng really couldn’t do.
"You’re a good person." Teng Yuangxiang thought there might be a turning point, but seeing Tang Zheng still so serious, she realized he wasn’t the type to deceive women with flattery and suave words; disappointed, she couldn’t help feeling a bit touched.
"Tell me about your experiences." Tang Zheng inquired.
"In the early part of the game, relying on Dantai’s command, only some Newbies died. It got a bit harder in the middle, but then it was only An Fei and Lin Fachan who protected Lin Jing and got some injuries. Trojan said that because the strong Group Leader wasn’t there, our game difficulty was also reduced quite a bit, although it still was tough." Teng Yuangxiang paused deliberately, waiting for Tang Zheng to chime in, but noticing he was just sitting fishing, she reached for her phone.
"It was all Tao Tao; she was so lucky, found a Team mission exemption card. She was afraid of dying, secretly used it, and just when the game was half over, we were teleported out," Teng Yuangxiang watched the reflective Tang Zheng, quietly sat next to him, using the information she got from Yu Manli, she had hired a private detective to keep an eye on Tang Zheng’s villa daily, just to get some alone time.
"Isn’t there something I can do?" Teng Yuangxiang hadn’t made her move when Tang Zheng’s phone rang.
"Uncle, I’m back, did you miss me?" Lu Fan’s voice was loud, "Where are you? I want to see you!"
"Tomorrow!" Tang Zheng had barely spoken a few words before another call came, all greetings from Group Members.
Due to the food poisoning incident at the university cafeteria, Mu Nianqi had been incredibly busy these past few days trying to find the cause to give the families an explanation, but the clues she gathered only angered her; it wasn’t a mistake from the buyers or chefs but a premeditated murder.
