Chapter 1240: Chapter 104: Fire Exchange and Casualty
Zombies attacked Marseille so suddenly, but Simpson wasn’t afraid, and calmly sorted out his manuscript, as well as stuffed his wife and daughter’s belongings into a suitcase. The two special agents sent to protect him were frantic, but because of his status, they couldn’t forcefully abduct him, only hoping the special forces would arrive soon.
Simpson didn’t move, so the red dot on his wristwatch also stayed still. The Brazilian Team used him as bait, setting a trap, aiming to kill the squad escorting Eve.
"Brother, they aren’t with Eve. Do we kill them?" Lucio, in a state of invisibility, lurked like a venomous snake in the shadows, eyeing the six unsuspecting people passing by, licking his dagger.
"Kill!" Luben had no choice. If they were to take Simpson away, they would definitely meet up with their team. If the Trojan judgment deemed they had completed the mission, he’d lose out. It was better to take advantage of their separation, kill these few first, take Simpson, and then fight for Eve with the others.
"Be careful, and call me Group Leader next time." Luben said sternly, pressed the communicator, and informed the whole team, "The prey has entered the pot, assist Lucio in the attack."
"You’re too cautious. Lucio can turn invisible. Even if he doesn’t complete the mission, no one else can kill him, right?" Tiago said in a relaxed manner, teasing the group leader. He was Luben’s childhood friend, a top hitman in a gangster group, with several lives on his hands, and even more arrogant since activating his ability.
"Being careful doesn’t hurt." Frustrated by this restricted game, Luben was a 2nd tier hero, the Fearless. Otherwise, he would have just gone berserk and could easily blast the opponents to smithereens.
"Too few newbies." Luben came from the infamous slums of Brazil, doing whatever it took to survive, treating the newbies as cannon fodder. Now, only five remained, not enough to form a complete encirclement. "The mission to come will definitely be harder, but luckily we have two ability users."
Convinced of his superiority, Lucio didn’t wait for the others to get in position and quietly pounced on the six ahead.
For safety, Tang Zheng moved to the stairs. They were on the fifth floor; he took the lead, while the most timid, Zhao Lei, was last.
"Aren’t we there yet?" Zhao Lei whispered, looking back frequently, always worried about zombies charging up.
"Silence, it’s affecting hearing!" Simpson lived on the twenty-second floor, which irritated Tang Zheng, as climbing the stairs took too much time.
Zhao Lei sulked, pouting his lips, and looked around again. He always felt there was something behind him, sending chills down his spine.
"Heh, idiot." Lucio was within five meters behind Zhao Lei, but he didn’t rush to kill. The man was highly alert and held a machine gun; had he sprayed the hallway, Lucio would have found it difficult to dodge.
"Can I attack at the corner?" After pondering, Lucio rejected this tactic. The others could chase him down. It was better to wait until they reached the twenty-second floor and only Zhao Lei was left, then assassinate in that instant.
As time ticked away, Tang Zheng was the first to leave the staircase and enter the corridor. The others followed, leaving Zhao Lei behind, and at that moment, Lucio, like a viper, struck from behind, covering the man’s mouth with one hand, and with the other, swiftly slashed his trachea with a long dagger.
Hisss, copious bright red blood sprayed from the neck artery, splashing in a fan shape on the wall.
Zhao Lei’s eyes bulged, his legs kicking in pain, trying to cry for help, but not a word came out.
"What’s that sound?" Although Lucio’s assassination was quiet, Tang Zheng still heard the sound of blood spraying and turned back.
The other four hastily turned as well, with Li Ranhao second last in line, but rather than checking what happened, he nervously backed away.
Wary of drawing attention with gunfire, Tang Zheng drew his Desert Eagle and unleashed a torrent of bullets at the wall.
"That was close. This man is really cautious." Lucio was frustrated that even with his care, he was noticed. If the wall collapsed, the blood and corpse would be exposed, leaving no chance for attack. So, he quickly rushed forward and stabbed his knife toward Li Ranhao’s heart.
As a gangster, Lucio wasn’t accustomed to guns; he excelled at Capoeira and edged weapons, combined with his invisibility, which made him quite conceited and fearless. He did not retreat but advanced, confident that his companions would arrive in seconds to restrain them while he took advantage; such tactics had already resulted in many deaths.
Ah, Li Ranhao screamed, looking in horror at his suddenly painful chest where blood dyed his clothes red. Unaware of what had transpired, he froze.
"Heh, as expected, an idiot." Lucio violently stirred his dagger, mangling Li Ranhao’s heart, and watching Liu Binshi and He Lian panic and scramble back, he wanted to laugh out loud.
Ada reacted swiftly, raising her MP5K and spraying bullets in front of her.
"Ha, you can’t hit me." Lucio was cunning, paralleling He Lian, using him as a meat shield. He didn’t believe the duo dared to shoot his way.
"Shoot!" Tang Zheng held up the Howling Reaper one-handed, spraying bullets in a fan-shaped pattern to clear any potential enemies, yet his gaze stealthily glanced past He Lian’s back. Li Ranhao’s grim state immediately made him think of invisibility, meaning the attacker had to be an ability user hiding safest behind He Lian. However, to ensure a sure kill, he deliberately fired randomly, to confuse the enemy.
Bang, Tang Zheng’s right hand lifted the Desert Eagle and fired a shot that blew up the temperature sensor overhead. The automatic water sprinkler system activated, and a deluge of water poured down from the shower head like heavy rain.
An invisible figure was immediately flushed out, with water droplets trailing down his body.
"Damn it," Lucio was focusing on Liu Binshi, deciding to bypass He Lian and kill him first, which would keep the enemy from pinpointing his location. However, the sudden cascade of water left him no place to hide. "Big brother, I’m in trouble."
Lucio didn’t panic; he thought of a countermeasure right away and dashed forward, intending to use He Lian as a meat shield. Unfortunately, Tang Zheng’s muzzle was already raised.
Thump, thump, Tang Zheng fired rapidly. Bullets tore into the outlined figure that the water had revealed, spraying blood and broken flesh. Lucio was torn apart, his shattered corpse dropping to the ground.
"Don’t space out, take cover and fall back to the hallway!" Tang Zheng’s words had barely faded when two doors not far across from them swung open, and four members of the Brazilian Team rushed out. According to the plan, they were originally waiting for Tang Zheng’s squad to enter the hallway before launching a surprise attack, which would have taken them a few seconds to retreat.
"Brother!" Luben was furious, his face filled with disbelief as if a stranger had grabbed his balls, twisting with anguish. The survivors were suddenly assaulted by an invisible attacker, caught off guard, and their first reaction was definitely to retreat. Unfortunately, the young man unexpectedly burst the automatic water sprinkler system, using it to reveal Lucio, and attacked as fast as a thunderbolt, giving him no chance to escape.
"Damn it, Tiago, kill them." Luben, wielding an assault rifle and using Tiago, who was fully steel-skinned, as a meat shield, charged at the four.
Tang Zheng took out a bundle of cluster hand grenades and tossed them into the passage. Boom, the blast wave churned, destroying the walls on both sides. Yet, the debris and flames were blocked by Tiago.
"This injury is nothing to me!" Tiago was extremely confident, firing his rifle without bothering to dodge and charged directly forward.
"Stop talking, just kill them." Luben’s eyes turned red with rage; he couldn’t wait to devour Tang Zheng. If the enemy had an ability user, they would have used it by now. The current situation reassured him.
"You think you’re the only ones who can be confident!" Tang Zheng didn’t sweep the enemy with the Howling Reaper. Seeing an opponent covered in steel skin emerge, he knew trouble had just arrived. If the enemy’s group leader knew about his Level A weapons, he would certainly warn his comrades to be cautious. In that case, taking them down would become more difficult. But now, they charged recklessly.
If the opponent had a breakout, his abilities would evolve, and these weapons might not kill him. However, it was a shame that he was just a newbie who had just developed his ability.
"Give me your backpack." Tang Zheng yanked off Liu Binshi’s backpack, grabbed forty Level A hand grenades, stuffed them all inside, pulled the pins, waited two seconds, and tossed it into the passage.
"Heh, I told you it’s useless." Tiago didn’t care about a bulging backpack thrown in.
"Don’t be impulsive." Luben saw Tiago intending to kick the backpack back and hurriedly warned him, but it was too late; the explosion occurred.
Boom, boom, this round of explosions covered a wide range, fiercely powerful, collapsing a ten-meter radius of the floor. Tang Zheng and his companions didn’t escape unharmed, either. They fell down, dazed by the shock wave. However, the Brazilian Team fared worse as they were at the epicenter of the explosion. Even though Tiago blocked most of the impact, they still suffered internal injuries, and falling debris struck their bodies.
"What’s going on? Didn’t you say that even a dozen heavy cannon hits wouldn’t hurt me?" Tiago was baffled, roaring at the group leader, his steel skin covered in cracks, and most of it peeling off, dripping blood.
Luben was lying among the rubble, unable to speak. He had focused all his attention on the enemy’s ability user, considering how to counteract, but didn’t expect to be injured by this kind of tactic. A vast array of Level A hand grenades could definitely break through defenses.
Luben wanted to escape, but Tang Zheng wouldn’t give him the chance. He aimed his machine gun and let loose a barrage of gunfire. Bullets whistled through the air, tearing through their bodies. A few shots that hit Tiago’s steel skin were actually blocked by it. He struggled to stand up, wanting to cover his body with steel again, but was hit by Tang Zheng where the steel skin had peeled off, shattered, and died.
"A group leader, no less!" Tang Zheng drew his knife and severed Luben’s wrist, took the space wristwatch, and stuffed it into the backpack. "Let’s go, find Simpson."
"We’re too late, Doctor, we must leave." The special agent heard the sound of explosives and said solemnly, deciding to resort to violence.
Tang Zheng rushed up and immediately raised his gun. Eva’s reflexes were quick; she didn’t give them a chance to fire and shot them dead.
"Doctor, we brought your daughter," Tang Zheng had just finished speaking when Dong Zixuan’s shout came through the walkie-talkie.
"Tang Zheng, we are under attack, the enemy is strong."
