Chapter 1239: Chapter 103 Midsummer Heat

"Can we go now? Three ability users should have no trouble fighting our way out, right?" Nie Jianhua urged everyone, pointing at his watch, "We’re running out of time."

Tang Zheng couldn’t find a map of Marseille Airport, but that didn’t stop him from finding a way. The zombies were having a feast in the lobby, so clearly it wasn’t wise to rush in and ask for trouble. That left only one option: to climb the wall and leave.

"Wipe out these zombies." Without an access ladder, Tang Zheng took out a rope, tied it to a seat, and then slid down out of the cabin.

Holding a machine gun and after checking the surroundings to ensure there were no zombies playing dead, Tang Zheng signaled that the area was clear. The newbies then started to leave the cabin in an orderly fashion, without any scrambling.

"Kong Licheng, traffic police, you guys lead the way. Go this way." Tang Zheng pointed towards the east side. About six hundred meters away, there was a wire fence with a road beyond it. No taxis were in sight, but zombies could be seen wandering around, evidently having overrun the entire airport and beginning to make their way into the city.

Kong Licheng cursed inwardly but didn’t argue; he took the lead. Because he was unhappy, he moved quickly and after three hundred meters, several newbies were already falling behind, unable to keep up.

"Slow down, what are you rushing for?" Zhou Meng supported the panting Su Su and complained about his colleague.

"Didn’t you see the zombies catching up from behind? If you fall behind, that’s on you. Why didn’t you exercise more regularly? Should we waste our time just for you?" Kong Licheng glared at Zhou Meng disdainfully, "Who do you think you are? Mind your own business."

The recent gunshots had attracted the zombies’ attention. Plus, given the open space of the airport, Tang Zheng and his group were very conspicuous, and a few dozen zombies had already started to follow them.

"They’re just common zombies, a quick spray of gunfire and they’re gone. What are you scared of?" Zhou Meng, not wanting to lose face in front of his girlfriend, yelled back.

"Stop arguing, is this really the time? Slow down a bit. Otherwise, if something unexpected happens, we won’t have the energy to deal with it." Tang Zheng stopped the two policemen.

Unwilling to comply, Kong Licheng continued at his pace with passive resistance. As a result, when Tang Zheng slowed down, the team followed suit, leaving Kong Licheng out in front by himself. He wanted to wait, but seeing the newbies’ disapproving glances, he quickened his pace instead.

"Damn, you’ll need me at some point." When Kong Licheng reached the five-meter-high wire fence, he surveyed the road and exercised restraint rather than using a hand grenade to blast through the fence, as that would undoubtedly attract more zombies. Unfortunately, his luck was poor and a Licker hiding in a supermarket across the road heard his footsteps and lunged at him.

Kong Licheng was extremely frustrated and fired his gun instinctively. The sound startled the surrounding zombies, which started to converge on his location.

Bang, the Licker leapt onto the wire fence, clambered over like a gecko with astonishing speed, and got to the other side.

"Someone come and help!" Kong Licheng panicked, giving up the attack and running for it as his marksmanship was poor and he couldn’t hit the Licker’s head.

The newbies started to panic and their dissatisfaction with Kong Licheng grew.

"Don’t panic!" Tang Zheng pulled out his Desert Eagle. The moment the Licker jumped down from the fence, its head was blown off by a shot and it collapsed to the ground.

A few of the closest zombies had already gathered on the wire fence, howling angrily. Tang Zheng tossed a hand grenade their way, flipping them over and blowing a big hole in the fence. Then he ran past Kong Licheng and crawled through the gap.

The newbies paid no attention to Kong Licheng, who was all talk. Compared to the Group Leader, he wasn’t worth mentioning.

"Don’t shoot!" Using a silenced Desert Eagle, Tang Zheng efficiently shot down the zombies as he ran toward a bus parked not far away.

This was the airport, which lacked nothing in the way of cars and passengers, though now they had all turned into zombies.

"Liu Guohao, you drive." Tang Zheng climbed onto the bus, killed two zombies that hadn’t left yet, dragged them out, and started the vehicle. Everyone followed the route shown on the watch map, heading off to find Simpson.

Eve was very quiet, unlike a child, pressed against the glass, interestedly watching the clawing, rotting zombies.

"Does your dad treat you well?" This was the third time Tang Zheng had asked this question, wanting to understand Simpson’s character. But the little girl, showing only a frightened expression, couldn’t say much.

"About a thirty-minute drive, and this mission will finally be complete." Watching the bus leave the zombies behind, He Lian leaned back in his seat and took the opportunity to rest.

"Stop the bus here later. Ada, Li Ranhao, Zhao Lei, Liu Binshi, He Lian, and I will be in charge of capturing Simpson." Tang Zheng didn’t take any chances and started assigning tasks.

"Why so complicated?" Su Su was puzzled, and also hoped to use the conversation to deepen their impression of one another. Only if they got closer, there would be a chance to get a Seed for Zhou Meng to use.

"The ones doing this mission aren’t just our team. Since they can’t get Eve or find us, they must be plotting around Simpson, probably lying in ambush ready to snatch him." The traffic police quickly understood, showing promise as a powerful future comrade.

The newbies realized the Group Leader had indeed thought things through thoroughly, whereas Kong Licheng felt annoyed.

"If there could be enemies in ambush, why don’t you take me along? What, you look down on me?" Kong Licheng snorted in dissatisfaction, everything seemingly going against him.

"Bring more people with you, I’m coming too," said Song Xin, wanting to share some of Tang Zheng’s burden, as he was too tired.

"Don’t relax, you’re in greater danger. Remember that woman in the tunnel? Her team must have marked Eve for tracking, but I can’t find it. That’s why I’ve left most of our people behind. Dong Tao, Song Xin, traffic police, if you’re attacked, you must ensure Eve’s safety. If you absolutely can’t hold on, I’ll allow you to use her as a hostage."

"Understood," said the traffic police officer, nodding and patting his walkie-talkie, "Keep the communication open, contact at any time."

Zombies were not few on the streets, but in front of the team’s powerful firepower, they were as fragile as paper. Now only the special infected could cause them some trouble.

The zombie horde had just flooded Spencer’s residential area like a tide, leaving it in chaos, with some citizens who hadn’t received notification trapped in their homes.

The bus stopped in the next block, about a hundred meters away. Then Tang Zheng took five people and left. To save time, he stole a Hummer, which was a piece of cake for the fearless.

The Hummer turned several corners and stopped under a building. Tang Zheng charged in first, turning several obstructing zombies into broken flesh.

"Group Leader, target located, six people in total, no sign of Eve," David reported from the rooftop surveillance. Upon seeing Tang Zheng, he gritted his teeth in hatred. It was this guy who had killed Lipstick.

"Hmm, so they were discovered after all. Continue monitoring," ordered the Curl-tongue Captain from the same building after hearing the report asked a young man covered in pimples, "How’s it going? Can you locate the bug you planted on Eve?"

"Wait a sec, looking!" The young man was a soldier with excellent qualities, his activated ability was insect swarm invasion, "Found it, a hundred meters away."

"David, keep monitoring, report their status in real-time. The rest of you, come with me to snatch Eve," commanded the Curl-tongue Captain, clad in military uniform, very decisive.

"Why not let the Brazilian Team fight them first?" asked the female Special Agent, accustomed to death and indifferent to Lipstick’s.

The Brazilian Team, like fools, had arrived early at Spencer’s place to ambush and attack the team escorting Eve, completely unaware they were being surveilled.

"Those fools? I’m worried they might kill Eve by mistake. But we can’t let them sit idle. Dagger, find a way to make them clash with the Chinese Team," instructed the Curl-tongue Captain as he leaped out of cover, commanding the Russians to converge on Dong Zixuan’s hiding spot following his orders.

"Who do you think will win?" asked the Special Agent, licking her crimson lips, curious.

"The Chinese Team. Want to bet? They can annihilate the Ukrainian Team, kill Lipstick—the Bus Team is just delivering food on a platter," boasted Bug Man, holding a Howling Reaper, burly as a rampaging bear, his military boots stomping the ground with force.

Zhao Dongtao and Eve found a hiding spot, and Kong Licheng, using the excuse of Tao Ran being an ability user, arranged for her to act as a guard.

"What’s that supposed to mean?" Song Xin wasn’t the type to get jealous easily, knew Tang Zheng valued Tao Ran, and stood up for her.

"What? She’s too delicate to go?" Kong Licheng coughed, spitting out a mouthful of phlegm, "So, only our lives are cheap?"

"Stop arguing, it’s not worth it," Tao Ran intervened, stopping Song Xin, who wanted to argue further, and walked out the door with the Howling Reaper, accustomed to the loneliness of the empty corridor.

The door suddenly creaked open, startling Black Long Straight.

"Hmm? A follower of Moira or Norns?" The speaking man was strange, wrapped in a fantastical set of black armor and carrying a black two-handed heavy sword with luminescent patterns and a Golden Lion Head Emblem on the hilt.

Tao Ran stood her ground, gripping the machine gun, watching the man warily.

"Don’t be afraid, I mean no harm," said the man, noticing Tao Ran’s blind eye and sighing. With a wave of his hand and a flash of light, an eye patch appeared, "This is for you."

Tao Ran did not accept it.

The man shrugged, seemingly unconcerned, and looked back at the gloves he was wearing. When Tao Ran appeared, the Golden Eye Pattern on them began to glow.

"It’s getting late, I have to leave now. Don’t worry, we’ll meet again," said the man before whisking past Tao Ran like the wind.

Black Long Straight turned around to find no one there. She thought she had seen a ghost, but then realized the eye patch was on her left eye, covering the darkness.

"Don’t you think it’s too quiet in the building? Even if there are no zombies, there should be Ordinary Citizens," noted He Lian, unable to hear any sounds, as quiet as entering a graveyard.

Zhao Lei stayed at the rear, constantly looking back.

"Stay alert and keep close to me," urged Tang Zheng, moving quickly to prevent giving the enemy more time to prepare for an attack. Nevertheless, the team still fell victim to a trap, suffering casualties. (To be continued.
